32,HumanisticPsychology,hasmanyfacetsandlendsitselftomany
narrativesandinterpretations.Presentedhereisoneversion,resultingfrom
theinputofthreeauthorsandmanyotherpeople.Readersmaywishto
readbetweenthelinesorprojectontothetexttheirownversions.In
humanisticpsychology,inwritingtheDivision'shistory,andindeedin
psychologyitself,therearealwaystextsandsubtexts,andmultiple"stories"
andinterpretations.Rightandleftbrainsplaytheirpartsinthemakingof
history,andintherecordingandinterpretationofit.Thischapterisone
historyoftheDivision.Otherfascinatingchapterscouldbewrittenabout
thepeopleinvolved,theintellectualandinterpersonalcurrents,andthe
creative,sociallyresponsible,andsometimesspontaneousandchaotic
eventsthatunderlaythishistory.
PriorHistory:AnEmergentCulturalZeitgeist
HumanisticpsychologyissometimesknownastheThirdForcein
contrasttotwomajororientationsinAmericanpsychology,behaviorismand
psychoanalysis,which,alongwiththebiomedicalmodel,areconsideredby
humanisticpsychologiststobereductionistic,mechanistic,and
dehumanizinginregardtohumanbeingsaswholepersons.Asonecriticof
behaviorismputit,"Americanpsychologyfirstlostitssoul,thenitsmind,
andfinallyitsconsciousness,butitstillbehaved"(Waters,1958,p.278.In
regardtopsychoanalysis,Freud'sownwordspresentthechallengetowhich
humanisticpsychologyresponded:
Themomentamanquestionsthemeaningandvalueof
lifeheissick,sinceobjectivelyneitherhasanyexistence;
byaskingthisquestiononeismerelyadmittingtoastore
ofunsatisfiedlibidotowhichsomethingelsemusthave
happened,akindoffermentationleadingtosadnessand
depression.(Freud,1960,p.436
Manypsychologistswerecrucialinpreparingthegroundforwhat

emergedashumanisticpsychology'salternative,butthreestandout:
AbrahamMaslow,CarlRogers,andRolloMay.Maslowfoundedthe
psychologydepartmentatBrandeisUniversityin1951withastrong
humanisticorientationevenbeforethemovementwasthusnamed.
Originallyworkingwithinexperimentalpsychology,Maslow(1954,
developedaresearchprogramandsubsequenthumanistictheoryof
motivation.Hearguedthatpeoplearemotivatednotonlyreactivelybythe
"deficiencyneeds"withwhichpsychologyhadhithertobeenconcerned,but
alsoproactivelyby"beingneeds,"ultimatelyincludingsuchmotivesasself-
actualization.
Rogers(1951soughtwaystofacilitateclients'yearningforself-
actualizationandfully-functioningliving,especiallyviaperson-centered
therapyandgroupwork.Hewasoneofthefirstresearcherstostudy
psychotherapyprocessusingtape-recordingsandtranscripts,andheandhis
studentsalsomadeextensiveuseofQ-sortstostudyself-conceptand
change.Heexploredthenecessaryconditionsfortherapeuticprogressand
emphasizedcongruence,presence,andacceptanceonthepartofthe
therapist.
