Cultureaffectsourwaysofperceivingandacting.Culturehasinstilledinustheacceptedsocietalbehaviorsandvaluesthathavebeenpassedfromgenerationtogeneration.Soinourdailylives,theculturecanaffectusinasilentwayandsometimesyoucan’tevennoticeit.Butwecanfindthedifferencewhenwemakeacomparewithothers.ThisiswhysomeonefromJapanmightremainsilentifdisturbedbyanother’sactions,whereasanItalianwouldmorelikelytocomplainaboutit.Sowecanbetterunderstandourbehaviorandother’sactionsduringaninteractionifyourealizethatwhatyouarehearingandseeingisareflectionoftheother’sculture.
Theeasternandwesternculturesarequitedifferentinsomecases.Trainingforindependenceorinterdependenceisonefactor.Forwesterners,itiscommonforchildrentosleepintheirownbedsinordertopromotetheirindependence.WhileamongAsians,itismuchcommonforchildrentosleepinthesamebedastheirparentswanttofosteraninterdependencerelationship.Aschildrenmature,thenatureoftheirfamilyandpeerinteractionsfostersthedevelopmentofindependenceorinterdependence.Thus,itbecomesingrainedinchildren’scharactersinaveryearlyage.Andthenthecultureispassedtothenextgenerationandtheytakeitasthecriterion.However,ifwegotoanothercountryorotherpartsoftheworld,wewouldfinditisnotrightforothers.Infact,therearedramaticsocial-psychologicaldifferencebetweenEastAsiansandEuropeanculture.EastAsiansliveinaninterdependentworldinwhichtheselfispartofalargerwhole.Westernersliveinaworldinwhichtheselfisaunitaryfreeagent.Easternersvaluesuccessandachievementingoodpartbecausetheyreflectwellonthegroupthattheybelongto.WhileWesternersvaluethesethingsthatcanembodytheirownvalue.Easternersareacceptingofhierarchyandgroupcontrol.WhileWesternersaremoreconcernedwithknowingaboutthemselvesandarepreparedtosacrificeforfairness.Easternersareeagerforharmonyandavoiddebate.Westernershavefaithintherhetoricofargumentationinarenasfromthelawtopolitics.Therearemanyotherthingsarenotalike.Ifwedon’tnoticeit,wewouldhaveproblemsinthecommunicationwiththemandmakesomejokesorevenconflicts.Inmyopinion,twothingsarecrucialifyouaretorelateeffectivelywithpeoplefromdiverseinternationalcultures.First,youmustbeknowledgeableaboutthediversityofpeoplefromotherculture.Second,youmustrespecttheirdiversity.Everycultureisequalandnooneissuperiortoothers.Sowejustrespectthemwhenwehappentoanotherculture.
Asnearlyaswecantell,thesesocialdifferencesaremuchthesameasthedifferencesthatcharacterizedtheancientChinaandGreek.Thecultureleadsthemtothedifferentdirections.Ifwewanttodevelopourselvesorcontactwithothers,weshouldbecarefulabouttheircultureandrespectthem.
