(xx·浙江大学附中高考全真模拟)Surprisinglyno one knows how many children receive education in English hospitalsstill less the content or quality of that education.Proper records are just not kept.We know that more than 850000 children go through hospital each yearand that every child of school age has a legal right to continue to receive education while in hospital. We also know there is only one hospital teacher to every 1000 children in hospital.

Little wonder the latest survey concludes that the extent and type of hospital teaching available differ a great deal across the country. It is found that half the hospitals in England which admit children have no teacher.A further quarter have only a parttime teacher. The special children’s hospitals in major cities do best; general hospitals in the country and holiday areas are worst off. From this surveyone can estimate that fewer than one in five children have some contact with a hospital teacher—and that contact may be as little as two hours a day. Most children interviewed were surprised to find a teacher in hospital at all. They had not been prepared for it by parents or their own school. If there was a teacher they were much more likely to read books and do math or number work; without a teacher they would only play games.

Reasons for hospital teaching range from preventing a child falling behind and maintaining the habit of school to keeping a child occupiedand the latter is often all the teachers can do.The position and influence of many teachers was summed up when parents referred to them as the library lady or just the helper”.Children tend to rely on concerned school friends to keep in touch with school work.Several parents spoke of requests for work being ignored or refused by the school.Once back at school children rarely get extra teachingand are told to catch up as best as they can.

Many shortstay childpatients catch up quickly. But schools do very little to ease the anxiety about falling behind expressed by many of the children interviewed.

(xx·浙江省高三第二次五校联考)Can you be too beautiful? It is hardly a problem that most of us have to bother—as much as we might like to dream that it were the case.

Yet the blessings and curses of beauty have been a longstanding interest in psychology.Do those blessed with shiny faces and an attractive body live in a cloud of appreciation—or does it sometimes pay to be ordinary?

bing through decades of findingssocial psychologists Lisa Slattery Walker and Tonya Frevert at the University of North Carolina at Charlotte have reviewed all the evidence to date and their conclusions are not what you might expect.

At the most basic levelbeauty might be thought to carry a kind of halo(光环) around it; we see that someone has one good qualityand by associationour deep mind may assume that they have other good ones too.

Even in the courtsa pleasing appearance can work its magic.Attractive criminals are likely to get less strict sentencesor to escape punishment entirely; attractive plaintiffs(原告)meanwhileare more likely to win their case and get bigger financial settlements. It’s an effect seen everywhere,” says Walker.

But if beauty pays in most circumstancesthere are still situations where it can have opposite results. While attractive men may be considered better leadersfor instancehidden sexist prejudices(偏见) can work against attractive womenmaking them less likely to be hired for highlevel jobs that require power. And as you might expectgoodlooking people of both sexes run into envy—one study found that if you are interviewed by someone of the same sexthey may be less likely to employ you if they judge that you are more attractive than they are.

More worryinglybeing beautiful or handsome could harm your medical care.We tend to link good looks to healthmeaning that illnesses are often taken less seriously when they affect the goodlooking. When treating people for painfor instancedoctors tend to take less care over the more attractive people.

And the bubble of beauty can be a somewhat lonely place. One study in 1975for instancefound that people tend to move further away from a beautiful woman on the pathway—perhaps as a mark of respectbut still making interaction more distant.Attractiveness can convey more power over visible space—but that in turn can make others feel they cant approach that person,” says Frevert.Interestinglythe online dating website OKCupid recently reported that people with the most beautiful pictures are less likely to find dates than those with less perfect pictures.

UltimatelyFrevert points out that focusing too much on your appearance can itself be harmful if it creates stress and anxiety—even for those already blessed with good looks. If you are crazy about attractivenessit may affect your experience and interactions,” she says. Its an outdated sayingbut no amount of beauty can make up for a bad personality. As the writer Dorothy Parker put it so elegantly“Beauty_is_only_skin_deepbut_ugly_goes_clean_to_the_bone.

Robots performing tasks according to a predetermined set of instructions are nothing new.But robots able to learn how to cook by watching videos are a pletely different approachwhich is conducted by a group of researchers at the University of Maryland.

If you have posted a video of your favorite recipe on the popular website YouTubechances are that it will be used by a robot.University of Marylands professor Yiannis Aloimonosleader of the groupsaidThere exists a large amount of video information on the Internet that our robots can capitalize_on

At presentthe videos are fed electronically,”said research scientist Cornelia Fermuller.Originallywe took our own videosour cameras looking at us doing the cooking,”she explained.Andas the robot advancesit reacts to good quality videos. And it will react to even lower quality homemade videos.

So farthe robot named Julia can make a simple salad by breaking each task into basic partssuch as grasping a spoonbringing it to the bowlstirring the salad and observing the results.

But why teach a robot how to understand a video when it can easily follow a fixed program? Aloimonos believes predetermined instructions lack flexibility. He thinks one of the problems is how to make the robot understand and use what it learns during a certain taskthe socalled feedback(反馈意见)another is the introduction of language.

I believe it will take quite some time before the robots are able to understand metaphorical(比喻性的) language,”he added. But,”he said,“we don’t need that to create a new world where the robots will be working for us.
