Night had come. There had been a big battle that day, and our army had 36 the enemy’s front line and then advanced a mile and a half. We were now in a trench(战壕) which the enemy had dug 37 a last line of defence and we could hear them 38 themselves a new trench from which to face us in the morning. They dug 39 stony soil all night, and by the morning we could see only the 40 of their caps and their spades(铲子) as they threw out the 41 .

In one trench, several of our soldiers spent the time after daylight had come 42 at the enemy’s caps and spades to see if they could hit any of them.

One of the enemy soldiers, who seemed to be a sportsman, joined in our game. He would 43 put his spade up, 44 it there for a few seconds to see 45 one of us could hit it, and then put it 46 again. Next time he would put it up in 47 a different place. A number of our soldiers shot at it whenever it 48 up, but 49 of them seemed to succeed in hitting it.

Then there came a time 50 the spade remained down for much longer than usual. We thought that the soldier might have been 51 playing this 52 by an officer, or that he might have gone off for a meal or something else. 53 just when we thought we would not see his spade again, it came once more, for the last time very 54 , and with a bandage tied 55 it.

People feel less pain after a good laugh, because it may cause the body to release chemicals that act as a natural painkiller, research has suggested.

The researchers at the University of Oxford also think belly laughs were unique to early human. This, they believe, enabled our ancestors to form much larger tribal groupings than the ape-like species that lived alongside them.

The researchers found that those subjects that had recently experienced belly laughs were able to withstand up to 10% more pain than they could before watching the videos.

Professor Robin Dunbar, who led the research believes that uncontrollable laughter releases chemicals that reduce pain into the body which, as well as generating mild euphoria(兴奋), also dull pain.

“It’s the emptying of the lungs that causes this effect,” he said. “It’s exactly what happens when we say ‘I laughed until it hurt’. It seems to be extremely painful and it’s that pain that produces the endorphin(脑内啡) effect.”

However, not all comedy programmes were able to hit the sport. Dunbar explained, “Things that worked very well were slapstick comedies such as Mr. Bean. Situation comedies such as Friends also seemed to be particularly successful.”

The next stage will be to see whether laughing really allows groups to bond together, work as a group better and act more generously towards each other. If that is the case, then it may explain why some two million years ago, the first humans were able to form large tribal communities of up to 100 whereas other apes and ape-like creatures that existed at the time were only able to form communities of up to 50.

56Which of the following statements is true?

ALaughter can help people feel less pain because it acts as a painkiller.

BAll comedy programmes take effect in reducing pain.

CLaughing certainly plays an important role in forming larger tribal communities.

DBelly laughs will lead to the endorphin effect.

57What percentage of withstanding pain after belly laughs is it, supposing it is 50% before?

A40% B. 60% C. 10% D. 30%

58What might be talked about if we continue the passage?

AThe further research into how uncontrollable laughs reduce pain.

BThe research into how laughing helps ancestors form larger tribal communities.

CMore examples about how belly laughs help reducing pain.

DThe research into whether belly laughs have other advantages.

A round of applause, please, for the Indian man who recently sang for 80 hours straight, setting a new Guinness world record. It’s an impressive feat, to be sure, but let’s just hope he still has a voice. According to Indian newspapers, Rajesh Burbure has been told to keep silent for several days so his vocal cords (声带) can heal.

It was reported that Burbure and his family are in a celebratory mood. “It’s a proud moment for all of us,” his wife told DNAIndia.com.

I, on the other hand, am unable to share their enthusiasm. Don’t get me wrong: I hope the 35-year-old Burbure lives forever, sells a million records and becomes an international celebrity. But his record --- singing for 80 hours straight --- is about as meaningful as most of the other curious but crazy feats listed in the Guinness Book of World Records.

Granted, I’m not qualified to speak on the subject. I’ve got no world records to my name --- and I never expect to have any. Then again, maybe I am qualified to speak for those of us who have better things to do than train for years to sing an 80-hour medley(混合曲) of pop songs.

But let’s not just pick on poor Burbure. He’s not the only person chasing meaningless prizes. The Guinness Book of World Records is full of the names of people who at one time grew the longest hair, or built the biggest bicycle, or baked the largest cheesecake.

To all of these enterprising (有进取心的) souls I ask, simply, “What was it all for?”

Congratulations! For all of your painstaking effort, you became a footnote in a thick book that no one reads, except for you and the person who will eventually surpass you --- with one more hour of singing, a few more centimeters of steel or a few more pounds of cheese.

After all, records are made to be broken.

63. From the text, we can learn that the author ________.
A. has no Guinness records, so he admires Burbures’ feat
B. feels it is a pity he was not invited to share the happiness with the Burbures
C. thinks singing for 80 hours straight is completely meaningless
D. is quite worried about Burbure’s vocal cords
64. Before someone wins a Guinness record, he or she has to _______.
A. become an international celebrity
B. know all about Guinness record
C. practice a great deal
D. bear great stress for fear of injury
65. We can infer from the article that _______.
A. after the 80 hours of singing, Burbure could no longer speak
B. Burbure’s wife didn’t support his attempt to make a Guinness record
C. many have criticized Burbure for his stupid behavior
D. challenging a Guinness record may be harmful to the health
66. The author’s attitude to the Guinness world records mentioned in the passage is _______.
A. positive B. impressed C. negative D. touched

67. What is the best title for the passage?

A. What Was the Point? B. Records Are Made to Be Broken

C. A New Indian Guinness Record D. The Guinness Book Is Boring

D

With his game-winning three-pointer at the buzzer on Tuesday night, Jeremy Lin capped off the New York Knicks' dramatic come-from-behind victory to defeat the Toronto Rapters on VaLINtine's Day. He may have also led the NBA to success this season.

Just weeks ago, J.Lin/Linsanity was playing in the NBA's D-league. With his headline-grabbing and surprising mid-season surge, however, Lin has earned his spot as the Knicks' starting point guard and nearly single-handedly turned around the team's disappointing season.

The Knicks have won six games in a row, and J.Lin has put up impressive numbers during the stretch. Although the season is still young, the Knicks have turn course upside down in just one week from the NBA's most disappointing team to a playoff competitor. Lin, not team's high-paid stars has saved the Knicks season, and likely coach Mike D'Antoni's job in New York.

After nearly 15 years of disappointing, sometimes depressive seasons, Madison Square Garden is alive again, and New York City can't stop talking about the Knicks. To put things into perspective, consider this: Just several years back, Knicks fans protested nightly outside of the Garden calling for the team's ownership to fire their coach Isiah Thomas.

Now, Madison Square Garden Co. shares are at a record high, the Knicks' average household television rating is up 70 percent since Lin joined the starting lineup. I watched the Knicks-Lakers game at a bar in Harlem, and have not felt that kind of energy from fans since the great playoff between the Knicks and Miami Heat in the late 1990s.

Beyond the Knicks, Lin may be saving the NBA as well. Just a few months back, the NBA took a massive credibility hit during a multi-month lockout of owners against the players. Although TV ratings so far have been fantastic, the season did not even begin until Christmas Day, which left many fans annoyed and eager to tune out the league. Over the past few years, LeBron James' drawn-out and free-agent saga, combined with poor play around the league have angered fans and damaged the league's brand.

Lin is leading a one-week NBA basketball revival. His Cinderella story has inspired Asian-Americans, boosted NBA sales in China, and turned the basketball world upside down. He's consistently been one of Google's top searches for over a week. All anybody can talk about is the NBA.

Whether Lin can continue his incredible momentum and lead the Knicks back to greatness remains to be seen. But he's got New York and the country talking about basketball again, no small feat for a 23-year-old from Harvard, of all places.

68. What does the underlined word “boost” probably mean?

A. influence B. decrease C. strengthen D. promote

69. Which one of the following statements is true?

A. NBA has experienced the disappointing season for 15 years.

B. Jeremy Lin has turned around the team’s disappointing season completely by himself.

C. It is not still clear whether Jeremy Lin will continue his legend.

D. The present coach of New York Knicks has been fired.

70. We can infer from the article that _______________.

A. Jeremy Lin has helped the Knicks into the playoff.

B. One of Google’s top searches has fallen on Jeremy Lin for a week.

C. NBA really had a tough time not very long ago.

D. New York and the States are talking about basketball again owing to Jeremy Lin.

71. Jeremy Lin’s surprising performance leads to the following except that ___________.

A. the Knicks has been the hot topic of New York City once again

B. the Knicks is promising to attend the playoff

C. Madison Square Garden Co. shares rise up

D. he has received a high-salary agreement

E

Most Americans get what money they have from their work; that is, they earn an income from wages or salaries. The richest Americans, however, get most of their money from what they own — their stocks, bonds, real estate, and other forms of property, or wealth. Although there are few accurate statistics to go by, wealth in American society appears to be concentrated in very few hands. More than 20 percent of everything that can be privately owned is held by less than one percent of the adult population and more than 75 percent of all wealth is owned by 20 percent of American adults. The plain fact is that most Americans have no wealth at all aside from their homes, automobiles, and a small amount of savings.

Income in the United States is not as highly concentrated as wealth. In 1917 the richest 10 percent of American families received 26.1 percent of all income, while the poorest 10 percent received 17 percent, mainly from Social Security and other government payments. The most striking aspect of income distribution is that it has not changed significantly since the end of World War II. Although economic growth has roughly doubled real disposable (可自由使用的) family income (the money left after taxes and adjusted for inflation) over the last generation, the size of the shares given to the rich and the poor is about the same. By any measure economic inequality is great in the United States.

The reality behind these statistics is that a large number of Americans are poor. In 1918, 14 percent of the population was living below the federal government’s poverty line, which at that time was an annual income of $ 9287 for a nonfarm family of two adults and two children. In other words, about one out of seven Americans over 31 million people was officially considered unable to buy the basic necessities of food, clothes, and shelter. The suggested poverty line in 1981 would have been an income of about $11200 for a family of four. By this relative definition, about 20 percent of the population or more than 45 million Americans are poor.

72. What does the majority of the Americans have in terms of wealth?

A. Their income and savings.

B. Everything they own in their homes.

C. Actually they have no wealth at all.

D. Their house, cars and small amounts of savings.

73. What is the percentage of wealth that is in the hands of most Americans?

A. More than 25%. B. Less than 25%. C. More than 75%. D. Less than 20%.

74. Why is economic inequality still great in the US in spite of the economic growth?

A. Because the proportion of income received by the rich and the poor remains almost the same as in 1917.

B. Because the economic growth has widened the gap of the family income between the rich and the poor.

C. Because income in the US is still concentrated in the hands of the richest 10% of American families.

D. Because some Americans made great fortunes during the Second World War.

75. What can we learn from comparison of the two poverty lines in the last paragraph?

A. The poverty line of 1918 is more favorable to the poor than that of 1981.

B. The 1981 line didn’t leave much to the poor.

C. There were more Americans who were officially poor by the 1981 line.

D. There were more Americans who were officially poor by the 1918 line.
