A year ago, I paid no attention to English idioms, though my teacher emphasized(强调) the importance again and again. But soon, the importance of English idioms was shown in an amusing experience.
One day, I happened to meet an Englishman on the road, and soon we began to talk. As I was talking about how I was studying English, the foreigner seemed to be astonished. Gently shaking his head, shrugging his shoulders, he said, You don’t say! You don’t say! I was puzzled. I thought, perhaps this is not an appropriate(适当的)topic. Well, I’d better change the topic. So I said to him. Well, shall we talk about the Great Wall? By the way, have you ever been there? Certainly, everyone back home will laugh at me if I leave China without seeing it. It was magnificent. He was deep in thought when I began to talk like a tourist guide. The Great Wall is one of the wonders in the world. We are very proud of it. Soon I was interrupted again by his words:You don’t say! I couldn’t help asking, Why do you ask me not to talk about it? Well, I didn’t request you to do so, he answered, greatly surprised. I said, Didn’t you say you don’t say? Hearing this, the Englishman laughed to tears. He began to explain, ‘You don’t say’ actually means ‘really!’ It is an expression of surprise. Perhaps you don’t pay attention to English idioms. Only then did I know I had made a fool of myself. Since then I have been more careful with idiomatic expressions. Remember: what the English teachers said is always right to us students.
24. A year ago, I paid no attention to English idioms because _______.

25. At first, on hearing You don’t say, I thought the foreigner meant _______.

26. The underlined word in the first paragraph probably means _______.

27. Which of the following is true according to the passage?

How do you get a man to do his share of the housework? If you are like most women, you’ve faced this question the hard way.
A man will enjoy a clean, orderly house, but he usually won't make an effort to clean or organize it. This doesn’t mean that a woman has to do all the housework ; she may have to manage many of the household duties, and request her partner’s participation (参与).A woman can often say that men and women should take equal responsibility for the housework.
Very few men are raised to be fully responsible for the housework, and many men look on the housework as women’s work. On the other hand, most men will readily work around the yard, make repairs and complete projects on weekends or evenings, and it’s important that you give your men appreciation for those things, too. Most men will take on a little extra housework around the house if asked politely. They are even more likely to do the housework if they can choose what they want to do, and do it without being monitored (监视).
Here’s the key: men want to feel that they are doing the housework either because they want to do a task, or because they simply want to please their women. Men are much less likely to take on household tasks they consider uninteresting and unimportant. In a word, men are likely to do a household task just for the good of the house.
28. The passage is mainly about____ .
A.how to get men to take on some housework
B.how to get men to serve their families
C.how to praise men's housework
D.how to make men do all the housework
29. According to the passage, a man ____ .
A.is willing to do any housework
B.likes to be told to do the housework
C.is taught to be responsible for the housework from his childhood
D.likes a clean house but doesn't make an effort to clean it
30. In order to get men to do some housework, women should often______ .
A.order them to do their share B.ask them to do some housework politely
C.blame men's laziness D.monitor men's work
31. According to Paragraph 3, which of the following would a husband most probably like to do?
A.Wash the dishes. B.Clean the table.
C.Paint the ceiling. D.Ask his wife to work around the yard.

第二节 书面表达

Dear Lily,

How have you been going on recently? I hear that junk food is your favorite and really worry about it. I'd like to give you some advice.

As we all know, junk food, such as hamburgers, is high in fat and calories. So eating too much junk food is bad for you. It may taste nice, but it can also make you overweight. Even worse, it can lead to heart disease and cancer. So I strongly suggest that you shouldn’t eat junk food any more.

In my opinion, you should develop a good eating habit to make sure that you have a balanced diet. You'd better eat three meals every day, and eat more fresh fruit and vegetables.

I hope you will give up junk food, the sooner the better.

Yours,

 Li Hua
