I’ve come back to check on a baby. Just after dusk I'm in a car down a muddy road in the rain, past rows of shackled(戴镣的) elephants their trunks swinging. I was here five hours before when the sun was high and hot and tourists were on elephants’ backs.

Walking now, I can barely see the path in the glow of my phone's flashlight. When the wooden fence post stops me short, I point my light down and follow a current of rainwater across the concrete floor until it washes up against three large, gray feet. A fourth foot twisted above the surface, tied tightly by a short chain and choked by ring of metal spikes(尖刺) When the elephant tires and puts her foot down the spikes press deeper into her ankle.

Meena is four years and two months old, still a child as elephants go. Khammon Kongkhaw, her caretaker, told me earlier that Meena wears the spiked chain because she tends to kick. Kongkhaw has been responsible for Meena here at Maetaman Elephant Adventure, near Chiang Mai, in northern Thailand, since she was 11 months old. He said he keeps her on the spiked chain only during the day and takes it off at night. But it’ s night now.

I ask Jin Laoshen, the Maetaman worker accompany in me on this nighttime visit, why her chain is still on. He says he doesn’t know.

Mactaman is one of many animal attractions in and around tourist-crowded Chiang Mai. Meena's life is set to follow the same track as many of the roughly 3800 captive(被捕获的) elephants in Thailand. When Meena is too old or sick to give rides-maybe at 55, maybe at 75she’ll die. If she's lucky, she’ll get a few years of retirement. She'll spend most of her life on a chain.

24Why does the author decide to come back?

AShe wants to check baby elephant Meena. BShe wants to feed those shackled elephants.

CShe wants to release those shackled elephants. DShe knows a baby is in need of help urgently

25What can we conclude from the second paragraph?

AThe author is scared walking in the path. BMeena is treated badly and very painful

CMeena only has three healthy legs. DOne of Meena's leg is badly broken.

26What's the author's attitude towards those elephants?

AIndifferent. BCritical.

CSympathetic. DNegative.

27We can infer that the purpose of the author's writing is______________

Ato describe those elephants to attract tourists around the world

Bto appeal to people to care about the fate of those elephants

Cto tell readers the story of a baby elephant in Chiang Mai, Thailand

Dto tell the reason why the number of elephants is decreasing

C

“A bird with a broken wing will never fly as high. ” I’m sure T. J, Ware was made to feel this way almost every day in school.

By high school, T, J. was the most celebrated troublemaker in his town. Teachers literally cringed when they saw his name posted on their classroom lists.

I met T. J. for the first time when all the students at school were attending ACE training. At first, he showed no interest in the discussion. But slowly, the interactive games drew him in. T. J. had some brilliant thoughts on those situations, which were welcomed by his group. By the end of the activity, the other students on the team were impressed with his concern and ideas and elected T. J. co-chairman of the team.

When T. J. showed up at school on Monday morning, a group of teachers were expressing their disagreements to the school principal about his being elected co-chairman. The principal reminded them that the purpose of the program was to uncover any positive feeling and strengthen its practice until true change can take place. The teachers left the meeting, firmly convinced that failure was unavoidable.

Two weeks later, T. J. and his friends led a group of 70 students to collect food They collected a school record: 2,854 cans of food in just two hours. The local newspaper covered the event with a full-page article the next day. That newspaper story was posted on the main bulletin board at school, where everyone could see it.

T. J. ,s picture was up there for doing something great.

T. J. started showing up at school every day and answered questions from teachers for the first time. The event he started now yields 9,000 cans of food in one day, taking care of 70 percent of the need for food for one year.

T, J. reminds us that a bird with a broken wing only needs mending. But once it has healed, it can fly higher than the rest. T. J. got a job. He became productive. He is flying quite nicely these days.

28What do we know about T.J. before he attended the training?

AHe was talkative in class. BHe didn't have a good fame.

CHis ideas were quite impressive. DHe showed up at school every day.

29Why did the team members elect T.J. co-chairman?

AHe promised them a bright future. BThey wanted to offer him a chance.

CThey thought the job was quite easy. DHe was considered qualified for the job.

30What do we know about people's attitude towards T. J. 's being elected?

AUncaring. BFavorable. CControversial. DDoubtful.

31What does the author try to convey with this story?

ANo pain, no gain. BRome wasn’t built in a day.

CDon't judge a book by its cover. DTreat others as you want to be treated.

D

Many people think that listening is a passive business. It is just the opposite. Listening well is an active exercise of our attention and hard work. It is because they do not realize this, or because they are not willing to do the work, that most people do not listen well.

Listening well also requires total concentration upon someone else. An essential part of listening well is the rule known as ‘bracketing’. Bracketing includes the temporary giving up or setting aside of your own prejudices and desires, to experience as far as possible someone else’s world from the inside, stepping into his or her shoes. Moreover, since listening well involves bracketing, it also involves a temporary acceptance of the other person. Sensing this acceptance, the speaker will seem quite willing to open up the inner part of his or her mind to the listener. True communication is under way and the energy required for listening well is so great that it can be accomplished only by the will to extend oneself for mutual growth.

Most of the time we lack this energy. Even though we may feel in our business dealings or social relationships that we are listening well, what we are usually doing is listening selectively. Often we have a prepared list in mind and wonder, as we listen, how we can achieve certain desired results to get the conversation over as quickly as possible or redirected in ways more satisfactory to us. Many of us are far more interested in talking than in listening, or we simply refuse to listen to what we don’t want to hear.

It wasn’t until toward the end of my doctor career that I have found the knowledge that one is being truly listened to is frequently therapeutic (有疗效的). In about a quarter of the patients I saw, surprising improvement was shown during the first few months of psychotherapy (心理疗法), before any of the roots of problems had been uncovered or explained. There are several reasons for this phenomenon, but chief among them, I believe, was the patient’s sense that he or she was being truly listened to, often for the first time in years, and for some, perhaps for the first time ever.

32What is mainly discussed in Paragraph 2?

AHow to listen well. BWhat to listen to.

CBenefits of listening. DProblems in listening.

33According to the author, in communication people tend to ________.

Alisten actively Blisten purposefully

Cset aside their prejudices Dopen up their inner mind

34According to the author, the patients improved mainly because _______.

Athey were taken good care of. Bthey knew they were truly listened to.

Cthey had partners to talk to. Dthey knew the roots of problems.

35What type of writing the article likely to be?

AScience fiction BA news report.

CA medical report. DPopular science

第二节 (共5小题;每小题2分,满分10分)

根据短文内容,从短文后的选项中选出能填入空白处的最佳选项。选项中有两项为多余选项。

Forgetfulness can be a normal part of aging. 36 As a result, some people may notice that it takes longer to learn new things; they don’t remember information as well as they did, or they lose things like their glasses, cellphones or other small items. These are usually signs of mild forgetfulness, not serious memory problems.

37 For example, medication side effects, vitamin B12 shortage, alcoholism, tumors(肿瘤) or infections in the brain can cause memory loss. A doctor should treat serious medical conditions like these as soon as possible.

Emotional problems, such as stress, anxiety or depression, can make a person more forgetful. For instance, someone who has recently retired or who is coping with the death of a relative or a friend may feel sad, lonely or worried. 38

The confusion and forgetfulness caused by emotions are usually temporary and go away when the feelings fade. The emotional problems can be eased by supportive friends and family. 39 Treatment may include counseling, medication or both.

If you’re concerned that you or someone you know has a serious memory problem, talk with your doctor. 40 Health care professionals can recommend ways to manage the problem or make suggestions on treatment or services that might help you out.

AConsider participating in clinical trials or studies.

BIt’s advisable to have health issues treated in time.

CHe or she can diagnose the problem or refer you to a specialist.

DBut if they last for a long time, it is necessary to get help from a doctor.

E. Some memory problems are related to health issues that may be treatable.

F. As people get older, changes occur in all parts of the body, including the brain.

G. Trying to deal with these life changes leaves some people confused or forgetful.

Let’s develop a healthy habit

According to a survey among my classmates, many have had habits in the summer holidays. The most common is staying up late into the night, spending much time chatting on QQ and playing computer games.

As we all know, if we often stay up late at night, we will feel tired and sleepy during the daytime and cannot concentrates while studying. Spending too much time on QQ or computer games will do harm to our eyes.

In terms of study and health, we should develop a healthy habit. First, go to bed a hit earlier instead of staying up late. Second, keep a balanced diet to build up our bodies. Third, don’t spend too much time on the Internet. Actually, there are varieties of activities for us to relax ourselves, such as doing sports and listening to music.
