阅读下列短文,从每题所给的四个选项(ABCD)中,选出最佳选项。

Christmas Eve was tomorrow. I hoped one of the packages that held a camera had already been placed under the Christmas tree. It was the only thing I wanted. I had beendropping hints to my parents. I love taking photos. My bedroom walls are covered with photos I had taken with my moms old camera. Im always trying to capture (捕捉) those perfect moments in which you can hear the laughter or touch the beautiful scene, but my camera has always seemed to fall short.

I knew Mom had put a few presents under the tree this morning, so I went on a hunt in my mom’s room. I opened the door and found my Christmas present was lying unwrapped on the floor — a big pink cat. I felt so disappointed.

Mom seemed to notice that, and she tried to cheer me up. “Stacy, I got your present today. I am so excited to surprise you!” “I can’t wait,” I said.

The next day I couldn’t wait any longer. I needed to tell her.

“Mom, may I talk to you for a second?”

“Sure, dear. What do you need to talk about?” she asked.

And so it came — how upset I was that I was getting a cat.

“Stacy, that cat is for your sister Julia!” she said with a smile.

“Then what am I getting?” I asked.

She just smiled. “You’ll have to wait and see.”

Next morning, I happily got into the living room and sat next to the tree. I pulled out the box with my name on it and opened the wrapping paper to find ...

My camera! “Thank you!” I said to both Dad and Mom.

Dad picked up the camera and took a picture of Julia, Mom and me. It has become one of my favorite pictures. Just on that Christmas morning, I took lots of photos with my camera — my little sister making a face, my parents giving me a soft smile — and all of these photos have come to mean one thing to me: love.

★★

Easter Islandan island in the south Pacific Oceanbelongs to Chile. The island is famous for its stone statues (雕像) along the coastlines.

In 1722, an explorer named Jacob Roggeveen visited the island. This happened to be on Easter Sun-day, and this gave the island its name: Easter Island. What he discovered there were three types of people, dark-skinned, red-skinned, and very pale-skinned people with red hair. The island had a small population with almost no culture they could remember and hardly any contact to the outside world.

Most scientists believe that the Polynesians were the first people of Easter Island. Another guess is that the first people came from South America, for the sweet potato, a main diet of the early Easter Island people, was from South America. It shows that there must have been some connection between the two cultures. Erich von Daniken, a famous writer, believes that aliens once lived on the island.

The most famous sight on Easter Island is the 887 huge stone statues called Moai. Most of the stat-ues are 5.5 to 7 meters tall and very few are shorter than 3 meters. The average (平均的) weight is 14 tons. Some Moai weigh more than 80 tons. Every one of them is made of one single piece of huge stone. Although all the Moai are large with heads and short-ened bodies, no two exactly resemble each other. Be-sides, since the land had been treeless by the time the Europeans first visited, how the statues were moved is still a mystery.

It is believed that the statues were used to repre-sent ancestors whom the island people regarded as gods. They were placed as a warning to keep enemies out and watch over other tribes (部落).

A. it was discovered by Jacob Roggeveen
