A test of spoken English will be included as an optional component of the College English Test (CET). Some people contend that it is absolutely necessary to hold a test of spoken English in China because we have been told many times that a Chinese student who has been learning English for years cannot communicate with a native English speaker. Sometimes even those top students who excel at grammar and writing skills find their English inadequate to express their thoughts freely when speaking. A test of spoken English will bring the importance of speaking English to the awareness of the college students, and thus help them with their communicating skills.

On the other hand, there are also people who maintain that good reading and writing skills would be enough for the average English learners. College students are already under considerable pressure from their coursework. Another required test will only add to their burden. Also, some students may take the shortcut and only practice the questions according to the fixed format of the test, which will not actually improve their spoken English.

I believe that a test of spoken English will do more good than harm. Since China will continue its policy of opening and reform, the ability to speak fluent English is a must for anyone who wants to surpass others in a highly competitive society. Whether I take the test or not, I shall make all efforts to practice my spoken English in the rest years in college.

U2 1. 创新思维能力培养的现状。2. 创新思维能力培养的问题分析。3. 给予教育相关部门的建议。

As we all know, the creative thinking ability plays an important role in both individual and social development. Unfortunately, we often hear that college students are good at learning knowledge from textbooks, but rather weak in generating their own ideas to solve the problems. What causes this phenomenon? I think the answer lies in the way our education operates.

For one thing, the test-oriented education model is the primary cause. In this model, our college students are used to solving problems whose standard answer is known, so they are hardly taught to try their own ideas. The ultimate goal of this education is to gain high score in the exams, not to develop one’s creative way of thinking. For another, schools and society have not provided enough opportunities for the students to try their own ideas. When a student comes up with an idea, he will be bound to give it up because it’s not easy to try it out, with few people accepting it.

The educational authorities should attach greater importance to developing the students’ creative thinking ability. First of all, we should remind students of the importance and emergency, raising their awareness of the issue, taking effective measure to adjust the aim of college education. Only if we provide more opportunities and set up a reward system to encourage students, the creative thinking ability will be around the corner.

U3 1. 选择职业是一个人要面对的众多难题之一。2. 需要花时间去选择职业。3. 选择职业时可以向多人寻求建议和帮助。 Choosing an Occupation

One of the most important problems a young person faces is deciding what to do. There are some people, of course, who from the time are six years old “know” that they want to be doctors or pilots or fire fighters, but the majority of us do not get around to making a decision about an occupation or career until somebody or something forces us to face the problem.

Choosing an occupation takes time, and there are a lot of things you have to think about as you try to decide what you would like to do. You may find that you will have to take special courses to qualify for a particular kind of work, or you may find out that you will need to get actual work experience to gain enough knowledge to qualify for a particular job.

Fortunately, there are a lot of people you can turn to for advice and help in making your decision. At most schools, there are teachers who are professionally qualified to give you detailed information about job qualifications. And you can talk over your ideas with family members and friends who are always ready to listen and to offer suggestions.

U4 1. 大学宿舍的集体生活是全新的体验。2. 宿舍生活与在家生活的不同之处。3. 宿舍生活利与弊。 Dormitory Life

For most university students, dormitory life is a new experience. Most students have never lived far away from their parents before coming to university. They have always had their parents to depend on for advice and guidance, and when they become university students, their lives begin to change.

There are striking difference between home life and dormitory life. Students must begin to be responsible for their own action. They must depend on themselves to get up in the morning on time for class, to eat properly, to keep their clothes and themselves clean, and to set aside an appropriate amount of time for study and relaxation. They must also learn to take care of their money, making sure to preserve enough for both necessities and for fun.

In general, there are both good and bad points about life in student-dormitory. Often, dormitory rooms are small and crowded. This lack of space can limit one’s privacy and make it difficult for students to concentrate on their studies. On the other hand, in a dormitory, students have a great deal more freedom than they might have at home. They can act according to their own will and desire than to that of parents.

U5 1.目前许多商品存在过度包装的现象2.出现这现象的原因3.我对这一现象的看法建议

On Excessive Packaging

In recent years, with the economy growing, all kinds of goods are flowing into our life. The packaging of goods becomes more and more attracting our eyes. However, the problem of excessive packaging has aroused people's wide concern.

This phenomenon exists for a number of reasons. For one thing, the business has seen through the mind of most consumers who are face-saving, for they thought that the more beautiful the packaging of goods is, the best people like. For another thing, excessive packaging can make the majority of merchants get high profit for the cheap commodity by improving price. Perhaps the primary reason lies that the form far outweighs the content.

In my opinion, it is more advisable to focus on the quality of goods than to decorate its appearance. So, it is urgent that immediate measures should be taken to stop the situation. Only in this way can we reduce unnecessary waste and have a rational and pure shopping condition, making our money cost worthwhile
