Lesson 3

The other day ,a Japanese writer asked me how I was able to appreciate authors and literary works of different schools

I was inquired ,the other day , how I was able to appreciate authors and literary works of different literary schools——this was from a Japanese writer .

前两天: The other day (文学用法)

A couple of days ago

A few days ago (常用)

My response went like this :for me , by no means ,a man of lettersnor do I conform to any particular literary school .Hence ,I exempt from any restriction in any way .

My response went like this :

My response went this way :

By no means : 谈不上是 属于: conform ···to 任何:particular

任何: any restriction 不受: exempt from

The writer went on so many books you have composed, as a renowned writer

with this , you turn out to be a man of letters ,but you didnot admit.

那位朋友又问--And then the writer asked me 最保守的翻译方法

The writer went on:””

明明:as renowned writer

I replied, :’I never stand among the party of literary men,and thus immune to the rule of literary . Nor do I have to be afraid of being exiled from the literary circle.’

唯其: 只要 stand among the `···party 什么行列之一

Be immune to

Be not subject to

Be not attached to

Be not subordinated to

规律 :文学原则 the rule of literary 赶出:exiled from 借用

My enemies? As I mentioned before , all the outdated conventional thinking All the irrational systemwhich hinder social progress or human development ,All the forces which trample on love --all of this are my enemies .

As I mentioned before as 传统的 conventional 观念:thinking

All the outdated conventional thinking

All the irrational systemwhich hinder social progress or human development

All the forces trample on love

它们都是我最大的敌人:all of this are my enemies

All my composition were to exclude ,expose , explode these are my enemies .

Over the twenties years between 1929 and 1948 , my output came out rapidly and quantitively .

What impinged into my mind ___as if my mind was being whipped , as if a ghost commandeered my pen and redressed my injustices it had suffered .

It seemed as if my mind was being whipped , as if a ghost was commandeered my pen and redressed my injustices it had suffered .

I felt as if···

It seems as if ··

As if ··

What impinged into my mind

mind commander my pen 伸冤 Redress the injustices it had suffered

I would share the emotions with principal characters ___ both tears and laughter mingled ; I would desperately scratch my head (破折号解释说明emotions

My literary view goes like this :for one thing ,wring is of living ;for another,

the highest ideal a literary work can attain is that writing and living should be in combination ; moreover , an author is supposed to make a life-size , vivid impression on readers . All in all , I fundamentally mean that any author’s composition are, undoubtedly, true-to-life and realistic.

我说 in my opinion 如同: be compared to(明喻) /is of (暗喻)

My literary view goes like this :

最高境界 the highest ideal a literary work

As author should make a life-size , vivid impression on readers.

I fundamentally means that both the authors and the books never tell lies.

I fundamentally mean that any author’s compositions are undoubtable truth-to-life and realistic

Recently , on another occasion , I noted that the highest stage art can attain is artlessness.

另一个地方: on another occasion

最高境界 the highest stage

Several decades ago , I was arguing with a friend ,’physically attractive people don’t need heavy make-up , my writing resembles an ugly monster without any decor ,but it looks a bit better’.

长得好看:physically attractive people 浓妆艳抹:heavy make-up

He refuted :’literary works have stood the test of time thanks to the skill adopted in them who today is actually concerned about what life was like a hundred years or so ago? ’

他说: 反驳道 He refuted 流传久远的作品: 禁得起时间的考验 literary works have stood the test of time (靠 thanks to :今天的人 be cancered about

生活:生活是什么样的 what the life was like

For thus , I take the other side :readers are moved by the life mirrored in a story

and destiny of principal characters .

I take the other side

两句之间缺了过渡词 transitional words : for thus

打动人心的 readers are moved by the life mirrored in a story /reflected

This implied that I an opposed to fabrication ,deception and flowery language .

这仍然: this implies

My hatred goes to those glory-seeking writers , for they deceive the reading public with their lies .

hatred 欺世盗名 those glory-seeking writers

For they deceive reading public with their readers .
