Intheearlyreviewsofthisnovelrevealsavarietyofattitudestowardandassessments.SomeearlyreviewerssuspectedstronglythatSonsandLoversisanautobiographicalwork.
“WesuspectthatPaulisaprojectionofthewriter’sownpersonality,”HaroldMassingham
said.OthersdidnotexplicitlymakeadirecttothepassionatelypersonalstyleofSonsand
Lovers.SomeofLawrence’scontemporariesinsistonseeingthenovelSonsandLoversas
theauthor’sonly-slightly-revisedpersonalhistory;othersdonot,althoughonecomplains
aboutthewriter’slackof“scientificdetachment.”Someofthereviewsbelievethebookto
beaboutthetragic“wastage”ofWalterMorel;othersthinktheauthoriswritingagainsthis
ownbiologicalfather.Then,too,therearecriticswhoseemedtosensethattheinconsistent
reviewsofthebookaremadepossiblebytheworkitself,whichisaboutemotionaloxymoron,passionatecontradictions.BeforeanyreviewersfullyinsistedupontheautobiographicalnatureofSonsandLovers.“InordertounderstandMr.Lawrencefully,we

mustgobeyondhisworks,”AlfredKuttnersuggestedinAFreudianAppreciationinSons
andLovers.InsistingonthestrongsimilaritybetweenSonsandLoversandLawrence’s
earliernovelsandlovepoems,Kuttnerdeclaredalltheseworkstobe“expressionsofthe
samepersonalexperience,”namely,Lawrence’s“hatred”forhis“father.”Havingsaidthis,
Kuttnerwentevenfurther,suggestingthatwhatLawrence“particularizessopassionately”is
whatFreud,moregenerally,“hasprovedbeyondcavil,”namely,that“thechild’s
attachmenttotheparentoftheoppositesexbecomestheprototypeofalllaterloverelations.”
AccordingtoShowalterE,saidinSexualAnarchy,thatLawrencewasdifficultto
acceptwomenhavetheirownthoughts,inthepoemshehadwrittenhaveshowntheanger,resentment,fearandpityoffemale.Atthesametime,thisfigurealsoexpressedtheviewthatmaleshouldbethedominantpositionintherelationshipbetweenmenandwomen,Lawrencealsoexpressedinthetexttheresentmentofpossessive,strongandfeistywomen.Lawrencearticulatedauniqueviewofreligion:Thattheonlywaytosavemankindistheunificationofbodyandmind,theperfectharmonyofsexandthemale-dominatedmarriage.

Onlywhenitreachesthenaturalbalancebetweenthetwoandtherespectwitheachother,
lifeisbeaccepted.Inotherwords,onlythelovewhichreachesboththephysicalandmentalcoordinationandtherespectwitheachotheristruelove.
AccordingtoMargaretStorch,saidinImagesofWomeninSonsandLovers,thethree
characters,GertrudeMorel,MiriamLeviersandClaraDawes,Theoutstandingfeatureofthesewomenisthehighaspiration(Theyarealldissatisfiedwiththeirnarrowandsmalllife
circles.Theyhopetocastofftheirformerdrab1ifeandtosearchforequalitywithmen.AccordingtoJackson,Dennis,andFledaBrownJackson,saidinCriticalEssaysonD.H.
Lawrence,MrsMorel’sdiligentstrivingforhighersocialstandingandherallanxietiesfor
prosperousandcivilizedlifegreatlyreflectherhighaspiration.Inaddition,heryearningforknowledgecanalsoshowherhighaspiration.Miriamisalsolongingforknowledgeandregardslearningknowledgeastheonlyaccesstochangehersocialstatus.Andshebelieves
thatinthiswayitcanestablishherself-confidenceandself-respect.Sheconsideredherself
asawomanapart,andparticularlyapart,fromherclass.Clara’screedoflifeistobefreeandindependent.Thesethreewomen’svivid

andwelldevelopedcharacteristicsaddagreatlustertothenovelitself.Theirhighsocialaspirationistheshiningpointsinthenovel.
Intheviewoftheauthor,therearefiercedebatesaboutthelevelofeducationwhichshouldbeavailabletowomen.IntheviewofPhilippaLevine,inVictorianFeminism,
womenbegantodemandaccesstotheuniversities,thoughpeoplebegantopayattentiontowomen’srights,itisalongwaytomakepeopledroptheircoloredglassesandseewomenin
afairwayandwithanewsight.Thesethreewomeninthenovelareallfightinginacertainwayforretainingtheirrights.Buttheresultisthattheycannotbreakthroughthesocialbondageandliveunhappilyunderthemen’sinfluence.Womenhavejustachievedpartial
rightsbutfailedtogetfullequalrightsinsocialreality.AsSimpsonsaidinD.H.LawrenceandFeminism,thatLawrencemaynotpromotethe
feminismthoughthimself,butundertheprevailingsocialconditions,whichisthatalthough
womencannotbreakthroughthesocialbondageandliveunhappilyunderthemen’sinfluence.Theyhavejustachievedpartialrightsinsocialreality.Sointhenovel,hehasto
showsomechangeofwomenreflectedintheirthoughtandbehaviors.Andobjectively,it
hasshowntheBritishwomen’sawakeningoffeminineconsciousnesstosomedegree.

T.R.WrightbelievesthattheBiblecanbesaidtobeamajorfactoroftherootcausesinLawrence’snovels.Itisliketheirritantofhisartisticimagination.ThescholarsYeXingguo
alsoassertedthatLawrence’snovelsisinextricablylinkedtotheBible.ZhangWenxihasherideasinTheConstructionandDeconstructionofTheConsciousnessofFemaleSubjectinSonsandLovers.Shediscussesthemother,Mrs.Morel,inSonsandLovers,thatits
prototypeofthe“mother”inancientmythology,bothterribleandlovely,bothkindlygentleandtoughterrible.Inthenovel,Mrs.MorelisgentlyholdingbabyPaulandsaid,“My
lamb!”BecauseintheBible,Jesusisknownasthelamb,soitcanbesaidMrs.Morel
believesthatPaulcouldsavehersoulandbringhappinesstoher,justasJesussavehumankind.However,whatistheactualimpact,theresearchersisamatterofopinion.AccordingtoWanLi,saidinAnAnalysisofTheCharactersinSonsandLovers,that
LawrencewantedtoexpressabourgeoisideologythroughMrs.Morel,andhetriedtoprovethattheethicsconceptofPuritanisthe

Clara,whoisPaul’sfirstandsecondlovesrespectively.IntheIntroductionpartofthenovel,itsays,“ThenovelitselfseesLawrenceimposinginterpretationsontheryesofthesewomenandisPaul-centered.”Inordertoemphasizewomen’sinfluenceonPaul’sgrowthfromaboytoarealman,Lawrencesparesnoeffortstocreatethesethreetypesoflove:maternallove,spiritualloveandphysicallove.
Theiropinionsareveryvaluableandworthyofconsiderations.Weshouldmakeprogressonthebasisoftheirresearches.Theyhaveprovidedmuchinformationtostudyfor
us,butstilltherearemanyplaceswheretheydonotdiscuss.Weneedtodofurtherresearchonit.
FromtheanalysisofCuiGengshengsaidinonFeminismintheRelationshipsofSons
andLoversandSuXinming’sTheDeepMeaningBehindTheInfatuationandFear?The
FeminismInterpretationoftheInnerWorldofPaul,thesethreewomenarepromptedPaul
tobecomematureintheaspectsofthesoul,spiritandbodyrespectively.Fromthem,wecannotonlyfindtheimageoftraditional

womeninthepaternalsocietyoftheVictorianperiod,butalsofindtheconsciousnessoffemaleself-awarenesswhichismakingtheirownefforts
tofightfortheirrights.Nevertheless,theyhavegotfailureinthemale-dominatedsocietyin
theend.Thetragedyofthewomenleadstohistoricalreasonsandtheprevailingsocialconditionsaswell.Withtheadventof
industrializedsociety,menaredeprivedoftherightsasamanbothinthecommunityandatwork.Theycanonlyventedtheangerontheirwives.
Itwillleadtounhappymarriageandthedeformityinthefamilyrelationships.Meanwhile,duetotheinfluenceofthefeministmovement,womenhavetheopportunitytoparticipateinwomen’sassociationsandtheyhaveaccesstoeducation.Theycangoouttowork.They
haveopenedtheireyesandgotthethoughtemancipation,theireconomicstatusisalsoimproved.Theybegantoacceptnewideas,andcanbeappliedinreallife.Allthese
characteristicsareembodiedonthesethreeheroinesinSonsandLovers.Withthedouble
impactsofboththetraditionalconceptintheVictorianperiod,andwomen’sliberation
movement,althoughineconomic,political,education,loveandmarriage,womenhavenotyetachievedfullequality,butthefactthattheyhavealreadygotapartialequalrightsis
undoubting.

AccordingtoZhaoYuhang,saidinWomen’sAlienationinTheEyeofTheMale?An
AnalysisinSonsandLovers,fromPaul,wecansee,hisviewsonwomeniscontradictory.Ontheonehand,heisveryobsessedinthesenseofindependenceandthesexualpassionofClara;Ontheotherhand,hefeelsscaredofthedesiretocontroldemonstratedbyhismother
andMiriam.Paul’sreactionreflectsthefeelingofLawrencefromhispersonalexperience.Hebelievesthatwomenplayacreativeaswellasadestructiveroleinmale’sgrowthandsexualrelationships.
Allinall,differentpeopleowndifferentopinionsonthisquestionbecauseoftheirpersonalunderstandingsthoughtherearesomeincommon.Undoubtedly,theirresearchesareworthyofourconsideration,butinordertogetabetterideaofthisquestion,itisalsonecessarytobecontinuallyanddeeplyresearched.Furthermore,thereisanadditionalquestiontobepaidmoreattention.Thatis,althoughLawrencemaynotpromotethefeminismthoughthimself,hisnovelSonsandLovershasreflectedthatthesethree
women’sstruggleforequalrightswhenBritishwomenhadachievedapartialvictory.Anditalsoconcludestherealisticsignificanceofwomenforpresentfeminineproblem.
