B (下城区2013年中考二模完形改编)

Thanksgiving Day was coming. The first grade teacher gave her class a fun assignment— to draw a picture of something for which they were thankful.

Most of the class might be considered poor, but still many would celebrate the holiday with turkey and other traditional food of the season. These, the teacher thought, would be the subject of most of her students’ art. And they were.

But Douglas made a different one. Douglas was a different kind of boy. He was the teacher’s true child of weak and unhappy. As other children played at break, Douglas used to stand close by her side. One could only guess at the pain that Douglas felt behind those sad eyes.

Yes, his picture was different. When he was asked to draw a picture of something for which he was thankful, he drew a hand. Nothing else, just an empty hand.

His abstract (抽象的) picture caught the imagination of his classmates. Whose hand could it be? One child guessed it was the hand of a farmer, because farmers raise turkeys. Another suggested a police officer, because the police protect and care for people. Still others guessed it was the hand of God, for God feeds us. And so the discussion went on — until the teacher almost forgot the young artist himself.

When the children had gone on to other assignments, she stopped at Douglas’ desk, bent down, and asked him whose hand it was. The little boy looked away and murmured, “It’s yours, teacher.”

She recalled the times when she had taken his hand and walked with him here or there, as she had the other students. How often she had said, “Take my hand, Douglas, we’ll go outside.” Or, “Let me show you how to hold your pencil.” Or, “Let’s do this together.” Douglas was very thankful for his teacher’s hand. Brushing aside a tear, she went on with her work.

The story speaks of more than thankfulness. It says something about teachers teaching and parents parenting and friends showing friendship, and how much it means to the Douglas of the world. They might not always say thanks, but they’ll remember the hand that reached out.

46. What was the subject that most students drew?

A. a picture of something thankful B. turkey and other traditional food of the season

C. a beautiful card D. an empty hand

47. How was Douglas?

A. healthy but unhappy B. energetic and happy C. weak but happy D. weak and upset

48. Whose hand did Douglas draw?

A. a farmer’s B. a police officer’s C. a hand of God D. his teacher’s

49. Why did Douglas drew an empty hand?

A. Because his teacher told him so.

B. Because he wanted to show his thankfulness to his teacher.

C. Because he took this hand so many times.

D. Because he thought God feeds us every day.

50. What does the passage try to tell us?

A. We should draw a picture of our teachers’ hands.

B. Douglas is a weak and different boy.

C. we should remind us that thankfulness is a kind of virtue.

D. Everyone will remember the hand that reached out.

C

You either have it, or you don’t — a sense of direction, that is. But why is it that some people could find their way across the Sahara without a map, while others can lose themselves in the next street?

Scientists say we’re all born with a sense of direction, but it is not properly understood how it works. One theory is that people with a good sense of direction have simply worked harder at developing it. Research being carried out at Liverpool University supports this idea and suggests that if we don’t use it, we lose it.

“Children as young as seven have the ability to find their way around,” says Jim Martland, Research Director of the project. “However, if they are not allowed out alone or are taken everywhere by car, they never develop the skills.”

Jim Martland also emphasizes (强调) that young people should be taught certain skills to improve their sense of direction. He makes the following suggestions:

If you are using a map, turn it so it relates to the way you are facing.

If you leave your bike in a strange place, put it near something like a big stone or a tree. Note landmarks on the route as you go away from your bike. When you return, go back along the same route.

Simplify the way of finding your direction by using lines such as streets in a town, streams, or walls in the countryside to guide you. Count your steps so that you know how far you have gone and note any landmarks such as tower blocks or hills which can help to find out where you are.

Now you need never get lost again!

D. They can develop a good sense of direction if they are driven around in a car.

A. tie it to a tree so as to stop it from being stolen

B. remember something easily known on the route

第二节: 请阅读下面的短文,掌握其大意,然后根据短文内容,从方框内A——F六个选项中选出正确的填入短文空白处,使其意思通顺,结构完整。选项中有一项多余选项

Are you left-handed? If you are, you make up just 10% of the world’s population. 56

Most people write and play musical instruments with their right hands.

Why are so few people left-handed? A new theory, called “cooperation (合作) vs competition” may have the answer. 57 When making tools for a right-handed person — like a knife — it was easier if everybody could use the same hand. But some humans wanted to compete instead. So to have an advantage over right-handed people, they would use their left hand to surprise competitors.

58 German born American scientist Albert Einstein, British physicist Isaac Newton and British biologist Charles Darwin are some famous “lefties”. At least six US presidents were left-handed, including Barack Obama, Bill Clinton, and Harry Truman.

“Lefties” are also often linked with creativity and visual (视觉) skills.

How can this be? Well, the left side of our brain is where we solve problems. The right side of our brain is where we develop creativity. Right-handers tend (倾向) to use the left side more than the right side. 59

“This is why there are more of them in creative areas, such as music, art and writing,” said Alan Searleman, PhD, from St. Lawrence University, New York.

60 They tend to have worse memories, often forgetting names and places.

Not all experiments seem very boring. This is a beautiful and interesting experiment. You’ll watch a special color show. OK. Let’s begin.

To do this experiment, we need a plate, at least three different kinds of food coloring, some milk and some dish washing liquid. First, carefully pour the milk into the plate so that it just covers the bottom. Then add about 6-8 drops of different food coloring onto the milk in different spots. Next add about 5 drops of dish washing liquid onto the drops of food coloring. Finally. You’ll watch the expected result.

How does it work? The main job of dish washing liquid is to go after fat and break it down. When you dropped some dish washing liquid onto the drops of food coloring on the milk, it tried to break down the fat in the milk. While it was doing that, it caused the colors to move around and mix, creating a very colorful display. Have fun! However, remember to pour the milk away but not to drink it after the experiment.
