Huangsaidthatalthoughheandhisfellowrescueworkershavebeenabletopenetrateasfaras350metersintothemainshaft,theyhavenotyetbeenabletoreachtheworkers.Theminersarebelievedtobestrandedatalocation390metersunderground.Huangandhiscolleaguesmetthesurfaceofthemine'sfloodwaterswhentheyhit350meters."Ouremergencyrescueheadquartershaslaidoutanetworkof17drainagepipes.Wehopetoremovethewatersoon,"Huangsaid.ThecollapseoccurredaroundmiddaySaturdayinthesuburbsoftheregion'scityofHeshan.Investigatorssaidthecollapsewascausedbycontinuousheavyrains.RecentdownpoursforcedminingauthoritiestohaltmineoperationsintheregionbetweenJune29andJuly1.MiningoperationswereresumedonSaturday.Seventy-oneminerswereintheminewhenthecollapseoccurred.Forty-ninemanagedtoescape,whilethreeothersperishedinthecollapse.Thebodiesofthedeadminershavebeenretrieved.SaturdaysawanothermajormineaccidentinSouthwestChina'sGuizhouProvince,where23peopleremaintrappedinafloodedmine.FloodwaterscontinuedtopourintothemineonSunday,despiteround-the-clockeffortstodrainthewater.
