It was a village in India. The people were poor. However, they were not unhappy. After all, their forefathers had lived in the same way for centuries.

Then one day, some visitors from the city arrived. They told the villagers there were some people elsewhere who liked to eat frog’s legs. However, they did not have enough frogs of their own, and so they wanted to buy frogs from other place.

This seemed like money for nothing. There were millions of frogs in the fields around, and they were no use to the villagers. All they had to do was catch them. Agreement was reached, and the children were sent into the fields to catch frogs. Every week a truck arrived to collect the catch and hand over the money. For the first time, the people were able to dream of a better future.

But the dream didn’t last long. The change was hardly noticed at first, but it seemed as if the crops were not doing so well. More worrying was that the children fell ill more often, and, there seemed to be more insects around lately.

The villagers decided that they couldn’t just wait to see the crops failing and the children getting weak. They would have to use the money earned to buy pesticides(杀虫剂) and medicines. Soon there was no money left.

Then the people realized what was happening. It was the frog. They hadn’t been useless. They had been doing an important job---eating insects. Now with so many frogs killed, the insects were increasing more rapidly. They were damaging the crops and spreading diseases.

Now, the people are still poor. But in the evenings they sit in the village square and listen to sounds of insects and frogs. These sounds of the night now have a much deeper meaning.

21Why did the villagers agree to sell frogs?

A. The frogs made too much noise.

B. They need money to buy medicine.

C. They wanted to please the visitors.

D. The frogs were easy money.

22What might be the cause of the children’s sickness?

A. The crops didn’t do well.

B. There were too many insects.

C. The visitors brought in diseases.

D. The pesticides were overused.

23What can we infer(推断) from the last sentence of the text?

A. Happiness comes from peaceful life in the country.

B. Health is more important than money.

C. The harmony between humans and nature is important.

D. Good old days will never be forgotten.

College visits are important. Before you commit years of your life and money to a school, be sure you're choosing a place, that is a good match for your personality and interests. You can't get the "feel" of a school from any guidebook, so be sure to visit the campus. Below are a few tips for getting the most out of your college visit.

    1. Explore on Your own

Of course you should take the official campus tour, but be sure to allow time to hang around on your own. The trained tour guides will show you a school's selling points. But the oldest and prettiest buildings don't give you the entire plcture of a college. Try to walk the extra mile and get the complete picture of the campus.

    2. Read the Bulletin Boards

When you visit the student center, academic buildings and residence halls, take a few minutes to read the bulletin boards. They provide an easy way to see what's happening on campus. The ads for lectures, clubs and plays can tell you what's going on outside the classrooms.

    3. Eat in the Dining Hall

You can get a good feel for student life by eating in the dining hall. Try to sit with students if you can. Do the students seem happy or stressed? Also, is the food good? Are there adequate healthy options? Many admission offices will give prospective students coupons(优惠券) for free meals in the dining halls.

    4. Visit a Class in Your Major

If you know what you want to study, a class visit makes a lot of sense. You'll get to observe other students in your field and see how involved they are in classroom discussion. Try to stay after class for a few minutes and chat with the students to get their impressions of their professors and major. Be sure to call in advance to schedule a classroom visit — most colleges don't allow visitors to drop in on class unannounced.

    5. Talk to Lots of Students

Your campus tour guide has been trained to market the school. Try to talk to students who aren't getting paid to impress you. These important conversations can often provide you with information about college life that isn't part of the admission script. Few university officials will tell you if their students spend all weekend drinking of studying, but a group of random students might.

For more tips, please go to collegeapps.about.com.

24. The best way to know about a college in an official campus tour is _____.

A . to walk around the campus alone

25. Reading the bulletin boards can help you _____.

A . decide the major you want to study
B . find out the after-class activities on campus
C . get free coupons from the admission offices
D . find out the options of healthy food

26. If you plan to attend a class on campus, _____.

A . drop in on a class in your major
B . have talks with the students in the class
C . make an appointment in advance
D . ask how the students like their teachers and majors

27. To get a real idea of the college during a visit, it's best to talk to _____.

A . famous professors
B . campus tour guides
C . admission officers
D . random students

Scientists have long puzzled over how iguanas, a group of lizards(蜥蜴) mostly found in the Americas, came to live in the isolated Pacific islands of Fiji and Tonga. Some scientists used to suppose that they must have traveled there on a raft, a journey of around 5,000 miles from South America to the islands. There are documented cases of iguanas reaching remote Caribbean islands and the Galapagos Islands on floating logs. But new research in January by Brice Noonan and Jack Sites suggested that iguanas may have simply walked to Fiji and Tonga when the islands were still a part of an ancient southern supercontinent.
The ancient supercontinent was made up of present-day Africa, Australia, Antarctica and parts of Asia. If that’s the case, the island species would need to be very old. Using molecular (分子) clock analysis of living iguanas’ DNA, Noonan and Sites found that, sure enough, the lineage of iguanas has been around for more than 60 million years—easily old enough to have been in the area when the islands were still connected by land bridges to Asia or Australia.
Fossils (化石) uncovered in Mongolia suggest that iguanid ancestors did once live in Asia. Though there’s currently no fossil evidence of iguanas in Australia, that doesn’t necessarily mean they were never there. The fossil record of this continent is surprisingly poor and cannot be taken as evidence of true absence, the authors write.
So if the iguanas simply walked to Fiji and Tonga from Asia or possibly Australia, why are they not also found on the rest of the Pacific islands? Noonan and Sites say fossil evidence suggests that iguana species did once inhabit other islands, but went extinct right around the time when humans settled in those islands. But Fiji and Tonga have a much shorter history of human presence, which may have helped the iguanas living there to escape extinction.
The researchers say that their study can’t completely rule out the rafting theory, but it does make the land bridge theory far more reasonable than previously thought.

28. What did some scientists previously believe about the iguanas?
A. They were once discovered in America.

B. They traveled by raft to Fiji and Tonga.
C. They could survive in poor living conditions.

D. They moved to Fiji and Tonga from Australia.
29. According to Noonan and Sites, 60 million years ago ____.

A. the land of the world was a supercontinent

B. Fiji and Tonga were connected to Asia or Australia

C. Africa, Australia and America were a continent
D. iguanas walked to Fiji and Tonga from Africa

30. The underline word lineage in Paragraph 2 probably refers to ____.
A. the line of generations of an ancestor

B. the change in ancient plants and animals.

C. conditions in which creatures can survive

D. the habitat of a type of an ancient animal

31. What is the main topic of this passage?

A. The life span of animals living on the ancient supercontinent.

B. The two islands being home to several iguana species in the Pacific region.

C. The fossil evidence suggesting iguanas’ ancestors’ swimming to Fiji and Tonga

D. By raft or by land — how did iguanas reach the tiny Pacific islands?

D

Ever since its creation over 40 years ago, the Internet has remained an almost unrestricted(无限制的) place. It is a place where anyone can present themselves in any form they choose. Because of anonymity(匿名) on the web it is possible for people—some of whom might normally be restricted from communicating with the outside world—to speak out without fearing the result of their actions. Those actions could put them in danger if carried out in their real names. Being anonymous on the web also makes it possible for people to discuss sensitive subjects, such as medical conditions and physical abuse, without these actions affecting their everyday lives in a harmful way.

There are many positive ways to use anonymity on the web, but there can sometimes be very bad side effects too, such as bullying(欺侮) racism, imitating someone in order to cheat others. When this kind of damaging activity is carried out online, how can the offender(冒犯者) ever be held responsible for their actions when they are anonymous on the web? How can we find them?

Thankfully, things are starting to change. The rise of social networks like Facebook, Google and Linkedin, which rely on people’s true identity, makes it increasingly difficult to live an anonymous life on the Internet. We are already beginning to see positive side effects due to these new levels of transparency(透明). Bullying, offensive comments and other forms of abuse are becoming less widespread now that people are no longer able to hide behind a mask.

However, the Internet is a place where everything can be found easily. A mistake made during a person’s teenage years could permanently tarnish their online records for the rest of their lives, no matter how much time has passed. We’ve all heard stories of employers examining jobs applicants via Google and Facebook. Would it be unfair of them to judge you by your past mistakes, shown by a social network that remembers everything you’ve ever done? I think so.

Now that our actions on the web are more public, we need to make sure we manage our personal information well.

32. Paragraph 1 is mainly about _______.

A. how to use the Internet

B. the history of the Internet

C. why people like being anonymous on the web

D. the positive effects of anonymity on the Internet

33. One of the bad side effects of anonymity on the web is that ______.

A. it will lead to irresponsibility in real life

B. offenders will get away with their actions

C. it will result in bad relationships among people

D. surfing the Internet will become a painful experience

34. The underlined word tarnish in paragraph 4 probably means _______.

A. keep B. open C. remove D. damage

35. Which section of a newspaper is the passage most probably taken from?

A. Business B. Opinion C. People D. Education
