Of course, the bike has been around for more than 150 years, and this isn’t America’s first bicycle boom(兴旺).A wave of bike enthusiasm swept the land in the late 1800s and bicycle production hit two million units in 1897.Then with the coming of the auto, bicycling declined, and for decades remained popular only with children and a few adults.

Now, national concern with air pollution and physical fitness has brought the bike back to the forefront----particularly with adults. More than eight million bikes were sold in the United States last year and a third of them went to adults. The year before, only 15 percent of new bike sales were for adults.

How much living space does a person need? What happens when his space requirements are not adequately met? Sociologists and psychologists are conducting experiments on rats to try to determine the effects of overcrowded conditions on man. Recent studies have shown that the behavior of rats is greatly affected by space. If rats have adequate living space, they eat well, sleep well, and reproduce well. However, if their living conditions become too crowded, their behavior patterns and even their health perceptibly change. They cannot sleep and eat well, and signs of fear and tension become obvious. The more crowded they are, the more they tend to bite each other and even kill each other. Thus for rats, population and violence are directly related. Is this a natural law for human society as well? Is adequate space not only desirable, but essential for human survival?

Every human being, no matter what he is doing, gives off body heat. The usual problem is how to dispose of it. But the designers of the Johnstown campus of the University of Pittsburgh set themselves the opposite problem—how to collect body heat. They have designed a collection system which utilizes not only body heat, but the heat given off by such objects as light bubs and refrigerators as well. The system works so well that no conventional fuel is needed to make the campus’s six buildings comfortable.

Some parts of most modern buildings—theaters and offices as well as classrooms are more than amply heated by people and lights and sometimes must be air-conditioned even in winter. The technique of saving heat and redistributing it is called “heat recovery.” A few modern buildings recover heat, but the University’s system is the first to recover heat from some buildings and re-use it in others.

Along the way, Pit has learned a great deal about some of its heat producers. The harder a student studies, the more heat his body gives off. Male students emit more heat than female students, and the larger a student, the more heat he produces. It is tempting to conclude that the hottest prospect for the Johnstown campus would be a hardworking, overweight male genius.

The newspaper was lowered to reveal a rather elderly man with a stern face.

“This is a no smoking compartment,” the man said. He indicated the notice near the window. We apologized and put away our unlit cigarettes.

The man went on, in a rather more kindly wayto warn us against the dangers of smoking.

“I speak as a doctor,” he concludedand after that he went back to reading his newspaper.

When he got out a few stations later, he left his newspaper behind him. We picked it up, eager to find out what had happened while we were on holiday.

“Just look at this,” remarked John, pointing to a photograph, “it’s the man who was sitting opposite us.”

61. Americans usually like to have advance notice when people come to see them. Only very close friends drop by unannounced. This is especially true if the guests want to stay for a few days. Here’s a good rule for house guests: Short stays are best. As one 19th century French writer put it, “The first day a man is a guest, the second a burden, the third a pest.” Even relatives don’t usually stay for several weeks at a time. While you’re staying with an American family, try to keep your living area neat and tidy. Your host family will appreciate your consideration. And they may even invite you back!
