businessesandcommunitiesinsolidaritywiththeaffectedcountries.Thisregionalunityhasbeenessentialtobringingtheoutbreakundercontrol–andwillbecriticaltoeffectiverecovery.Icommendthemorethan800AfricanvolunteerswhodeployedthroughtheAUEbolasupportmechanism.
Ialsothankthecountriesthatansweredmycalltosendinlogisticalsupport,medicalteams,crisismanagersandaidforsafeanddignifiedburials.
Thousandsofwomenandmenfromwithinandoutsidethecountriesputtheirlivesonthelinetoslowtheadvanceofthisdisease.Thankstothesepartners–andtoomanyotherstoname–wehavecomealongwayincontainingtheoutbreak.
TheGeneralAssemblytookdecisiveaction,endorsingtheUN
MissionforEbolaEmergencyResponse–UNMEER.IthankHisExcellencySamKutesa,PresidentoftheGeneralAssembly,forhiscontinuedleadershipinkeepingthemembershipseizedwiththisissue.AsUNMEERpreparestoclosenextmonth,theUNwillmaintainthededicatedhigh-levelleadershipunderWHOtogetherwiththeUNcountryteams,initssupporttohelptheaffectedcountriesgettozero.Thestrategytoendtheoutbreakisworking–butthefinalstretchoftheresponseremainsparticularlychallenging.

CasesinGuineaandSierraLeonehavebeenreducedconsiderably.Theresponseisbeingfine-tunedtofocusonincreasingengagement,awarenessandcontacttracingintheremainingaffectedcommunities.NewcasesinLiberiashowtheneedforcontinuedvigilancegiventheregionalrisks.TheLiberianGovernment'sproactiveactionsalsounderscorehowtheresponsestrategyhaseffectivelyreinforcednationalcapacitiesandknowledgetobeactivatedforfutureoutbreaks.
ButtheimpactsoftheEbolacrisishavebeenfar-reachingandmuchworkisneededtosupportthecountries.
Theoutbreakhaserodedprogressonpeaceanddevelopment.Ithasdisruptedhealthandsocialservices.
Manymajoreconomicsectorshavebeenaffected:agriculture,mining,trade,tourism,transport,fisheriesandlivestock.The
functioningofschools,hospitalsandotherpublicinfrastructurehassuffered.
Allofthesedisruptionshavehadanegativeimpactontheeconomiesofallthreecountries–whichwere,priortotheEbolaoutbreak,onapositivegrowthtrajectory.
Thisnegativeimpact–oneconomies,livelihoodsandmoreimportantlylives–demandsthattheglobalcommunitycontinuestoprioritizerecoveryfromEbolaevenlongafterthecrisissubsides.Thiswillbeessentialto“stayatzero”inordertostrengthenresiliencetowithstandfutureshocks.
Yourcontinuedgenerositywillhelptheaffectedcountriescarryouttheirplansforrecoveryoverthenexttwoyears.
Oursharedgoalistobuildbackstronger,saferandmore
resilientcapacitiesforpreventionandresponse.Thatmeansaccesstohealthserviceseverywhere–notjustincapitals.ItmeanshealthservicesequippedtonotonlyrespondtoextraordinaryoutbreakslikeEbola,buttoaddressmalaria,choleraandothercommonailments.InvestinginGuinea,SierraLeoneandLiberiawillyieldglobaldividendsinpreventinglocaloutbreaksfrombecomingnationalemergenciesandregionalpandemics.
