A

Humanity has begun wrestling with the dangers of globalthreats such as climate change. But fewauthorities are planning for catastrophic solar storms-huge eruptions of massand energy from the sun that destroy Earth’s magnetic field. In a recent paper, two Harvard University scientists estimate the potential economic damage fromsuch an event will increase in the future and could equal the current U.S.GDP-about $20 trillion-150years from now.

This kind of storm hashappened before. The so-called Carrington Event in 1859, the most intensemagnetic storm ever recorded on Earth, caused auroras (极光in the atmosphere and even delivered electric shocks totelegraph operators. But a Carrington-scale storm today would cause far moreharm because society now depends so heavily on electrical power grids, communications satellites and GPS.

In an effort to quantify thatthreat, astrophysicists Abraham Loeb and Manasvi Lingam of the Harvard-Smithsonian Center for Astrophysics developed a mathematical model that assumessociety’s vulnerability (脆弱性to solar stormswill grow with technological advances. Under this model, during the next 50years

thepotential for economic damage will depend primarily on the rising odds of astrong solar storm over time. Beyond 50 years our vulnerability will increasedramatically with technological progress until the latter levels off.

Some scientists question themodelspredictions. “Estimating the economic impact is challenging now, let alone inover a century,” says Edward Oughton, a research associate at the University ofCambridge’s Center for Risk Studies. Yet he warns that uncertainty should notstop us from practical preparations, such as making power grids stronger andimproving early-warning systems.

Loeb and Lingam think up amuch wider strategy: a $100-billion magnetic deflector shield (导流板), positioned between Earth and the sun. This ideaseems “pretty preposterous,” however, given that solar particles arrive atEarth from all directions, says Daniel Baker, director of the Laboratory forAtmospheric and Space Physics at the University of Colorado Boulder.

A better understanding of“space weather”-the changing condition in Earth’s outer space environment, including solar radiation and particles-could help find the best strategies forconfronting a dangerous solar storm, says Stracey Worman, a senior analyst atconsulting firm Abt Associates. “This is a challenging but important question,”Worman says, “that we need more eyes on.”

21. According toEdward Oughton, which of the following about solar storms is right?

A. They will become much stronger in 150 years.

B. Technology makes their potential damage grow.

C. It’s difficult to predict their possible economicdamage.

D. Space weather forecast can effectively help dealwith them.

22.The underlined word “preposterous” inParagraph 5 means .

A. unreasonable B. practical C.innovative D.inflexible

23. The author writesthe passage mainly to .

A. report the damage of solar storms

B. remind people to guard against solar storms

C. introduce the characteristics of solar storms

D. analyze the possible cause of solar storms

I believe in getting lost. Lost in the text of the novel that is particular to your thoughts and feelings that you consider special. The song that reminds you of your childhood summers, where you close your eyes and lose yourself reliving a memory; feeling the warm wind brushing against your arm, the smell of the dusty sand that you stir up as you ride your bicycle, murmuring the tune of that song. Like the unprepared Sunday Drive, with no destination. You’re free to wander, take paths that you’ve never noticed, discover places you haven’t been. Then falling off on the path to lead you back home, leaving you to test directions and alertly absorb your surroundings in order to find your way back; that kind of lost.

I get lost daily, whether it’s in thought, or the unplanned drive I just decided to go on. Getting lost is an adventurous learning experience that trains you how to be more aware of your surroundings. A few of my most favorite memories involve physically getting lost. That one late night trip back to Ludington from Grand Rapids I took with a few friends. We finally realized we were going the wrong way when we hit South Haven, almost three hours out of our way. There was also the time where I got lost in the De Vos Place in Grand Rapids after the President’s Ball and then the parking garage for a solid two hours. I felt like my life was that one scene of an American television situation comedy, minus the air conditioner. At the time, these are nervous experiences that get your anxiety pumping. You’re fearful that you won’t be safe, but it always works itself out in the end. Physically losing yourself prepares you for how you manage when you emotionally or mentally lose yourself.

You don’t always have to be lost in a literal sense toget lostand some of the time, losing yourself may not be a positive experience. There are times where I lose sight of who I am. While lost, I test our metaphorical paths and sometimes they turn out to be the right direction and other times they were a wrong turn. I make note of these wrong turns, so I can avoid them further on up the road of finding my way back to who I am.

In Walden, Henry David Thoreau wroteNot till we are lost, in other words not till we have lost the world, do we begin to find ourselves, and realize where we are and the infinite extent of our relations.Getting lost fuels my curiosity and teaches me lessons on finding my way back to the right track. I believe in getting lost through day dreams, a misplacement, adventures, and difficult times where you make discoveries about yourself and the atmosphere around you. In order to truly find yourself, I believe that you should put down the map and get wonderfully lost.

Déjàvu—the strange feeling of having been to this very place or done this very thing before when you know you havent—happens to most people at some point in their fivesThe expression comes from the Frenchmeaningalready seen.”

My friend Shannon knew that she was going to marry her husband the clay that they metShe had dated a lot of men following her divorcebut none of them felt rightThenshe met BobThere was something about the way he smiledhis voice and the shape of his handsthat made her think that they had known each other beforeAfter talking it was clear that their paths had never crossedbut after their first lunch datethey became inseparableWhat Shannon and Bob immediately felt for each other was more than just physical chemistryIt was a natural understanding and a depth of closeness that usually arises after couples are together for many yearsThey were married two months after they met and have been together now for ten years

The largest-ever study of the link between city walkability and high blood pressure has been held up as evidence of the “invisible value of urban design” in improving long-term health outcomes, say researchers.

The study of around 430,000 people aged between 38 and 73 and living in 22 UK cities found significant associations between the increased walkability of a neighborhood, lower blood pressure and reduced risk of high blood pressure among its residents.

The outcomes remained consistent even after adjustments for socio-demographic (社会人口统计学), lifestyle and changing physical environment factors, though the protective effects were particularly pronounced among participants aged between 50 and 60, women, and those residing in higher density and poor neighborhoods.

The paper was published in the International Journal of Hygiene and Environmental Health this week. With high blood pressure a major risk factor for chronic (慢性的) and particularly heart diseases, researchers at the University of Hong Kong and Oxford University said the findings demonstrated the need to take notice of the health-influencing factor in urban design.

“With the increasing pace of urbanization and demographic shifts towards an ageing population, we become more likely to suffer from chronic diseases,” said Dr. Chinmoy Sarkar, an assistant professor at the Healthy High Density Cities Lab of the University of Hong Kong and lead author of the study. “The action taken to improve public health must consider the invisible value of urban planning and design.

“We are spending billions of pounds in preventing and curing heart diseases — if we are able to invest in creating healthy cities through small changes in the design of our neighborhoods to make them more activity-friendly and walkable, then probably, we will have significant savings in future healthcare expenses.”

To measure a neighborhood’s activity-promoting potential, researchers developed a set of index of walkability containing relevant urban elements, including residential and retail (零售) density, public transport, street-level movement, and distance to attractive destinations.

Poorly designed spaces generally reduced walking and physical activity, promoting the lifestyles of long time sitting down and not moving; and were harmful to social interactions, and as such associated with poorer mental and physical health.

Because walkability was “based on the underlying design of the city”, said Sarkar, cities could be modified or designed to encourage it. “Such investments in healthy design are likely to bring in long-term gains as they are enduring and common.”

32. By considering “invisible value of urban design”, people can _______.

A. reduce the ageing population

B. slow down the pace of urbanization

C. promote activity-friendly and walkable cities

D. invest in preventing and curing heart diseases

33. What can be inferred from the passage?

A. A set of index is essential to ensure that urban design promotes walkability.

B. Walkable cities can lower blood pressure and the risk of high blood pressure.

C. Chronic diseases are becoming common due to people’s neglect of their health.

D. Middle-aged women living in poor areas are less likely to benefit from increased walkability.

34. All of the following are the undesirable consequences of poorly-designed neighborhoods EXCEPT _______.

A. failing health B. unhealthy lifestyle

C. fewer social interactions D. fewer neighborhoods

35. According to Dr. Chinmoy Sarkar, _______.

A. cities should encourage the residents to engage in social interactions

B. the design of our neighborhoods should meet people’s needs for retail density

C. money invested in creating healthy cities is money saved in future healthcare expenses

D. chronic diseases will be common because of our lifestyle and the physical environment

第二节 书面表达(满分25分)

例文:

Dear editor,

I am Li Hua, a visiting student from China. In your recent issue, an article about the Chinese Dragon Boat Festival left a deep impression on me. I’m much obliged to you for introducing Chinese culture to your people, which will surely bridge the gap between our countries.

But I found a flaw in the picture that goes with the article. Actually, we compete with dragon boats, not your familiar rowing boats. That is because dragons are considered as a symbol of the Chinese culture. I sincerely hope you can revise the boat information and thus readers will have a better understanding of China.

Thank you in advance for efforts you will make.

Yours,

Li Hua
