OnehundredyearsafterAlbertEinsteinformulatedthegeneraltheoryofrelativity,aninternationalteamhasproposedanotherexperimentalproof.InapaperpublishedtodayinNaturePhysics,researchersfromtheHebrewUniversityofJerusalem,theOpenUniversityofIsrael,SapienzaUniversityofRome,andUniversityofMontpellierinFrance,describeaproofforoneofthetheory'sbasicassumptions:theideathatalllightparticles,orphotons,propagateatexactlythesamespeed.
Theresearchersanalyzeddata,obtainedbyNASA'sFermiGamma-raySpaceTelescope,ofthearrivaltimesofphotonsfromadistantgamma-rayburst.ThedatashowedthatphotonstravelingforbillionsofyearsfromthedistantbursttowardEarthallarrivedwithinafractionofasecondofeachother.
Thisfindingindicatesthatthephotonsallmovedatthesamespeed,eventhoughdifferentphotonshaddifferentenergies.Thisisoneofthebestmeasurementseveroftheindependenceofthespeedoflightfromtheenergyofthelightparticles.
Beyondconfirmingthegeneraltheoryofrelativity,theobservationrulesoutoneoftheinterestingideasconcerningtheunificationofgeneralrelativityandquantumtheory.Whilethesetwotheoriesarethepillarsofphysicstoday,theyarestillinconsistent,andthereisanintrinsiccontradictionbetweenthetwothatispartiallybasedonHeisenberg'suncertaintyprinciplethatisattheheartofquantumtheory.
Oneoftheattemptstoreconcilethetwotheoriesistheideaof"space-timefoam."Accordingtothisconcept,onamicroscopicscalespaceisnotcontinuous,andinsteadithasafoam-likestructure.Thesizeofthesefoamelementsissotinythatitisdifficulttoimagineandisatpresentimpossibletomeasure

directly.Howeverlightparticlesthataretravelingwithinthisfoamwillbeaffectedbythefoamystructure,andthiswillcausethemtopropagateatslightlydifferentspeedsdependingontheirenergy.
Yetthisexperimentshowsotherwise.Thefactthatallthephotonswithdifferentenergiesarrivedwithnotimedelayrelativetoeachotherindicatesthatsuchafoamystructure,ifitexistsatall,hasamuchsmallersizethanpreviouslyexpected.
