BA GHDAD—An Iraqi soldier went on the rampage at a joint security station in northern Iraq on Wednesday，shooting dead two US soldiers and wounding six，the US military said．

“He was engaged by counter-fire and killed，”she added．A local morgue said it had received the body of the Iraqi soldier，riddled with bullets．
Two local police sources and an Iraqi army source，all of whom declined to be named because of the sensitivity of the subject，said a quarrel had broken out between the Iraqi and US soldiers at the joint station．
But Kageleiry denied there was any altercation between the soldiers before the shooting．

In the push to improve education，test scores get most of the attention．Many educators say，“Test scores shadow other ways in which children can be inspired to learn．”Here is a fresh method to ensure students to make the grade．
● The School
Fairview Elementary School is located in the south side of Modesto，California，where the crime rate is high．Fairview，with about 1，000 students from kindergarten through to sixth grade，has long suffered from discipline problems，poor test scores，and a nearly total lack of communication with their parents．These problems are not surprising because many of the parents—immigrants who work on farms or in factories—speak little or no English．
● The Method
Since 2002，Fairview Elementary School has been on a five-year program：to keep America strong，children must be trained to respect many points of view，and understand the five freedoms，such as freedom of speech．As students learn the rights and responsibilities of a good citizen，they will develop the skills and attitudes needed to excel in study．
The program has no set classes．Fairview students enjoy “freedoms’’ other kids might envy（they voted not to wear school uniforms，for example）．They accept such responsibilities as speaking up during class discussions，and keeping the school clean and safe（Fairview is considered the cleanest of 33 schools in its district）．Different from tradition，there is no hand-raising in class．“Instead，”says teacher Deborah Supnet，“we teach them to listen until the other child stops talking．”It is called an exercise in respect．

Every day after school millions of children—most of them in middle school or high school—head home to empty houses．Often，they’re on their own until dinnertime or later—not by choice，but by necessity．While they may be old enough to avoid setting the house on fire，each afternoon is still a minefield（充满隐伏危险的事物）．
It’s a minefield hidden with drugs and alcohol，Internet addiction，violent video games and，perhaps worst of all，loneliness．

The afternoon hours are also dangerous when it comes to crime．The U．S．Department of Justice reports that the rate of violent crimes reaches its highest point between 3 p．m．and 4 p．m．—nearly the same time at which children are most likely to be victims of such crimes．One study found that those who are on their own 11 hours or more a week are twice as likely as those who aren’t to drink or smoke．
All this leads some health experts to an important conclusion．“Lack of adult involvement is one of the strongest influences on bad behavior，”says Robert Blum，chairman of population and family health at Johns Hopkins School of Public Health in Baltimore．In fact，he and others believe it’s stronger than background，family income，or family structure．“And the more time teens spend unsupervised（无人监督的），the worse they’11 behave．”
