Teaching design for Topic 3, Section C, Unit 6 Enjoy Cycling

Language goals: At the end of the lesson, students will learn some safety rules that bicycle riders should know and obey. Based on the knowledge, they will be able to write a short passage on how to ride their bicycles safely.

Learning Objectives

I. Knowledge and skills

1. Learn the vocabulary needed for reading and writing texts on how to cycle safely:

in a word, truck, notice, pay attention, traffic signal, safety, reflector, in case of, first aid, injury

2. Learn to extract useful information quickly from the text by targeting the key words.

3. Learn to infer the meaning of words from the contextual clues.

4. Learn to write by making use of the language learned from the reading text.

II. Teaching Method

1. Scaffold the students by activating their prior knowledge on the topic.

2. Improve the students’ reading comprehension by introducing useful reading skills.

3. Build the students’ language awareness by a large amount of input.

Teaching procedure

Pre-reading

1. The teacher shows a picture of herself in which she is riding a bicycle and tell the students she enjoys cycling. Then ask the students whether they like cycling and let them brainstorm the advantages of cycling. Present the phrase “in a word” by generalizing the students’ ideas with the sentence “In a word, cycling is good for us in many ways”.

(arousing students’ interest and activate their prior knowledge of cycling)

2. The teacher goes on to tell the students that she feels worried while riding her bicycle on the road these days. Show pictures of bicycle accidents to help the students understand her worry and teach “in case of” “injury” and “safety”. Then discuss with the students why there are so many accidents nowadays. Teach the new words “truck” and “notice” at the same time.

(building a context for the students to discuss the reasons of the increasing bicycle accidents, preparing them for the topic of safety rules on cycling. )

3. Lead the students to think about how to keep safe while cycling. Present some rules and ask the students to tick those bicycle rides should know. Teach “pay attention to”, and “traffic signal” before going through the rules. Then let the students read the rules one by one and do the ticking at the same time. After that, tell the students they are going to read a passage and learn more safety rules.

While-reading

1. Ask the students to read the passage in P47-1a quickly and do 1b, match the main idea with each paragraph.

2. Give three titles for the students to choose the best one based on the main ideas.

( providing an opportunity to develop the students’ skill of generalizing)

3. Ask the students to read the passage again and answer several questions about details. Remind them that finding the key words of the questions in the passage can help them target the answers to the questions easily.

Q1. What must bicycle riders do when riding at night?

Q2. What should a bicycle rider know to do in case of an accident?

Q3. If a bicycle rider gets a serious injury in an accident, what should he/she do?

4. Check the answers.

5. Present the new words and phrases “reflector” and “first aid”. Introduce the skill of inferring the meanings of words from the context.

6. Ask the students to figure out the writer’s purpose.

Post-reading

1. Show pictures of some bicycle riders who do not obey the safety rules. Remind the students that bicycle riders should not do such things.

2. Ask the students to look at the chart on the worksheet, ticking the things bicycle riders should do and cross those they shouldn’t do.

(relating real life experience to expand the students’ thinking and preparing them for the writing)

3. Ask the students to write a short passage, talking about how to ride a bike safely. The teacher walks around the classroom while the students are writing, offering help when needed.

4. Take two pieces of writing from the volunteers and edit the writings with the class. Discuss with the students how to improve the passages and what is impressive in the passages. Help the students to figure out how to edit their own passages.

5. Highlight the idea of cherishing our lives and always being careful at the end of the class.

Homework

Assign the students to edit and rewrite their passages after class.
