Today, The topic of my speech is Caring for the empty nester.

As the saying goes, filial piety is the most important in all virtues. To respect the elderly is the Chinese traditional virtue. But With the deepening of the aging of society, there are a growing number of empty-nesters, which has become a serious social problem. When the children leave home due to reasons such as work, study, marriage, leaving their middle-aged parents at home, empty-nesters will produce the symptoms of mental disorders, known as the “empty-nest” syndrome.

There are several reasons for this condition. I think the main reasons are social reason and family reason. The rapid development of society make many cities requires a lot of labor force. The elderly know that their children's work is not easy, preferring to choose their own lives to reduce the burden on their children. These main reasons lend to more and more young people flow over into the cities to look for more salary. And it comes very naturally that the problems of the empty-nesters become more significant. The secondary cause is personal reason. On the one hand, those who can afford to live independently will choose to be separated from their children. On the other hand, the elderly has a strong emotion to their living environment, and they do not want to leave. So more and more people become empty-nester.

Empty-nesters face many problems. The biggest problem is life problem. With their age becoming older and older, they have different illnesses. Some of them in the countryside don’t go to see a doctor because they don’t want to spend money. What’s worse, they keep this a secret to their children not to disturb them. Next problem is mental problem. They are very lonely. Their children often come home once or twice a year for about a week. The elderly need to talk to the young to share their happiness and sadness. Loneliness often leads to different mental problems. Last but not least, some empty nesters do not have economic income, They face a serious economic problem and they do not have enough money to go to hospital to see a doctor.

So, what can we do for the empty nesters? As far as I am concerned, the most important solution is that their children should come back home more and more often and call parents at least once a week. The young couples need to care about their parents’ health and encourage them to go to hospital once they are uncomfortable. What’s more, the society can help the empty nesters by providing more and more free consultation and inspection for them. In addition, more volunteers should be organized to chat with the empty nesters or give them economic assistance.

To respect the elderly is the progress of human science development. If human have proper thoughts, the society can develop healthily. To care the elders is not only for a child and a family, but also for a society and a country. So let us care for empty nesters.
