"Butmostofthesocial-economicinfrastructure,hospitals,schoolsstillremaininaccessible,andthepeoplewhohavebeenaffectedremainroughlythesame,"saidNhongo.
Thecommunitiesoftheregionwerepreparingfortheannualharvestofpearlmilletandcornwithinweeks.Nhongosaystheoutlookisbleakandthatabout30percentoftheaffectedcommunitieswerealreadyexperiencingfoodshortages.Hesaystheimpactcouldbefeltforaslongastwelvemonths."Forthemediumtolongtermtherewillbeaneedforrecovery,meaningthosewhowereexpectingtoharvesttheircropsfortheirfoodwillneedtocontinuebeingfedbythehumanitarianagencies,"saidNhongo."Andthenalsotheirfieldswillneedtoberehabilitatediftheyhavebeenflooded,soitmightaffecttheirlivelihoodsevenforthenextseason."
CommunitiesinthecentralregionsofnorthernNamibiawillhaveaccess,astheydoeachyear,tofishthatcomesdownfromAngoladuringtheannualflood.Thisfishisdriedandkeptforusethroughouttheyear.
However,NhongosayscommunitiesintheCapriviwhorelyonfishingintheZambeziandOkavangothroughouttheyear,willbelessfortunate.
"Butwhenitisfloodedlikethisthenfishingbecomesalmostnotpossible,sotheyaredefinitelygoingtobeaffectedintermsofnothavingtheirnormalsourcesoflivelihood,"hesaid.
AlreadytheNamibiangovernmentispreparingassessmentsoftheneedsofthecommunities.Nhongosaysthiswillbepresentedtodonors.
"Therearegoingtobemeetingswiththedonorpartners,andmaybefromthatwearegetanideaofhowmuchwillbeneededintheshorttermaswellasinthelongterm,"hesaid.
AcrosstheZambeziinZambia,nationaldisastermanagementofficialssaythefloodinghasreacheditspeak,buttheyonlyexpecttohavefullimpactassessmentreportsinaboutaweek.
