The grass looks greener on the other side of the fence. That’s an old saying in English. It means that other places often look better, more interesting than the place where you live.Let’s go to KFC for dinner and then watch some Japanese cartoons! We all know it: more and more Chinese kids love American and Japanese food and movies. Some people worry that young Chinese are beginning to feel that way. They see young Chinese ignoring Chinese culture arid, instead, buying Japanese cartoon books, watching Korean soap operas and even celebrating western holidays.

Foreign books and soap operas are good, but Chinese writers and actors are just as good. As for holidays, Christmas is nice, but it can never have the meaning for Chinese that the Spring Festival has, and the West has nothing to compare with the Mid-Autumn Festival. China has lots of cool things in its culture: calligraphy, Beijing Opera, quick meals on the streets, and even Jay Chou! And let's not forget the part of Chinese culture I like best : its friendliness. Not all countries are as warm as China.

It’s good to enjoy other cultures and to learn from them, but they can never replace your own culture. It’s good to look on the other side of the fence, but make sure you take a good long look. You will find that the grass isn’t always greener.

Although some people become worried about that, I don’t think they should. Will we get more powerful without lea. rning from other countries? Will Chinese people live more happily without American fast food? Besides, it's fun to learn about different cultures. Chinese kids can learn about other cultures and have fun, but they also need to learn more about their own culture. Be proud of Chinese culture and of being Chinese !

25. The author thinks young Chinese .

A. are foolish in learning- our own culture

B. are ignoring our own culture

C. are interested in our own culture

D. are hating our own culture

26. In some young Chinese’s eyes, which of the following is not thegreener grass?

A. Japanese cartoon books.

B. Korean soap operas.

C. Christmas.

D. The Mid-Autumn Festival.

27. In the author's opinion, what is the best feature of Chinese culture?

A. Friendly. B. Hard-working. C. Brave. D. Honest.

28. What is the best title for the passage?

A. Chinese culture and western culture B. Simple young Chinese

C. That grass is not always greener D. Interesting western culture

C

When I was six, Dad brought home a dog one day, who was calledBrownie. My brothers and I all loved Brownie and did different things with her. One of us would walk her, another would feed her, and then there were baths, playing catch and many other games. Brownie, in return, loved each and every one of us. One thing that most touched my heart was that she would go to whoever was sick and just be with him/her. We always felt better when she was around.

One day, as I was getting her food, she chewed up(咬破 one-of Dad's shoes, which had to be thrown away in the end. I knew Dad would be mad and I had to let her know what she did was wrong. When I looked at her and said "Bad girl", she looked down at the ground and then went and hid. I saw a tear in her eyes.

Brownie turned out to be more than just our family pet. She went everywhere with us. People would stop and ask if they could pet her. Of course she'd let anyone pet her. She was just the most lovable dog. There were many times when we'd be out walking and a small child would come over and pull on her hair. She never barked (吠叫) or tried to get away. The funny thing is she would smile. This frightened people because they thought she was showing her teeth. Far from the truth, she loved everyone.

Now many years have passed since Brownie died of old age. I still miss the days when she was with us.

29. What would Brownie do when someone was ill in the family?

A. Keep him/her company. B. Look at him/her sadly.

C. Play games with him/her. D. Touch him/her gently.

30. We can infer from Paragraph 2 that Brownie .

A. would eat anything when hungry B. felt sorry for her mistake

C. loved playing hide-and-seek D. disliked the author's dad

A. She was treated as a member of the family. B. She played games with anyone she liked.

C. She was loved by everybody she met. D. She went everywhere with the family.

People in the United States honor their parents in two special days: Mother's Day, on the second Sunday in May, and Father's Day, on the third Sunday in June. These days are set aside to show love and respect for parents. They raise their .children and educate them to be responsible citizens(公民). They give children love and care. These two days offer an opportunity to think about the changing roles of mothers and fathers. More mothers now work outside the home. More fathers must help with childcare.

These two special days are celebrated in many different ways. On Mother’s Day people wear carnations. A red one symbolizes a living mother. A white one shows that the mother is dead. Many people attend religious services to honor their parents. They are also the days when people whose parents are dead visit the cemetery(公墓). On these days families get together at home, as well as in restaurants. They often have outdoor barbecues on Father's Day. These are days of fun and good feelings and memories.

Another tradition is to give cards and gifts. Children make them in school. Many people make their own presents. These are valued more than the ones bought in stores. It is not the value of the gift that is important, but it isthe thoughtthat counts. Greeting card stores, candy makers, bakeries and telephone companies do a lot of business during these holidays.

32. Which is NOT a reason for children to show love and respect for parents?

A. Parents bring up children.

B. Parents give love and care to children.

C. Parents educate children to be good people.

D. Parents pass away before children grow up.

What you do each morning affects your entire day. The choices that we repeatedly make determine the life we live. 36

Manage your energy, not your time.

If you think about it, you’ll probably realize that you are better at doing certain tasks at certain times. For example, my creative energy is the highest in the morning, so that's when i do my writing each day. However, I spend my afternoons on phone calls and emails, which don't need my creative energy to be high. 37 What task is that energy best suited for?

Prepare the night before.

It is really necessary to spend a few minutes each night organizing your to-do list for tomorrow. When I do it, I'll outline the article I'm going to write next day and develop a short list of the most important items for me to do. 38 .

39

Sounds simple, yet nobody does it. It took me a while to get over the urge( 强烈的欲望) to open my inbox, but finally I realized that everything can wait a few hours. Nobody is going to email you about a true emergency (a death in the family, etc. ), so leave your email alone for the first few hours of each day.

Turn your phone off.

This reduces the urge to check text messages. This simple method reduces the possibility that you

waste time on meaningless tasks.

You’ve got 25, 000 mornings. 40

A. Don’t open email until noon. B. What will you do with each one?

C. Leave your phone in another room. D. What type of energy do you have in the morning?
