[2019·吉林乾安七中高一质量检测]Now many young people are travelling around the world on their own, not because they have no one to travel with, but because they prefer to go alone.

Kristina Wegscheider from California first travelled alone when she was at college and believes that it is something everyone should do at least once in their life. “It opens up your mind to new things and pushes you out of your comfort zone.” Wegscheider has visited 46 countries covering all seven continents.

In foreign countries, with no one to help you read a map, look after you if you get ill, or lend you money if your wallet is stolen, it is challenging. This is what drives young people to travel alone. It is seen as character building and a chance to prove that they can make it on their own.

Chris Richardson decided to leave his sales job in Australia to go travelling last year. He set up a website, The Aussie Nomad, to document his adventures. He said he wished he had travelled alone earlier. “The people you meet, the places you visit, or the things you do, everything is up to you and it forces you to grow as a person,” said the 30yearold man.

Richardson describes travelling alone like “a shot in the arm”, which “makes you a more confident person that is ready to deal with anything”. He said, “The feeling of having overcome something on my own is a major part of what drives me each day when I'm dealing with a difficult task. I walk around with my head up because I know deep down inside that nothing is impossible if you try.”

The great 19th century explorer John Muir once said, “Only by going alone in silence can one truly get into the heart of the wilderness.”

[2019·山东莘县期中]Saturday, March 24th

We have arrived in the hot, wet city of Bangkok. This is our first trip to Thailand (泰国). All the different smells make us want to try the food. We are going to eat something special for dinner tonight. The hotel we are staying in is cheap, and very clean. We plan to stay here for a few days, visit some places in the city, and then travel to Chiang Mai in the North.

Tuesday, March 27th

Bangkok is wonderful and surprising. The places are interesting. We visited the famous market which was on water, and saw a lot of fruits and vegetables. Everything is so colourful, and we have taken hundreds of photos already! Later today we will leave for Chiang Mai. We will take the train north, stay in Chiang Mai for two days, and then catch a bus to Chiang Rai.

Friday, March 30th

Our trip to Chiang Rai was long and boring. We visited a small village in the mountains. The village people here love the quiet life — no computers or phones. They are the kindest people I have ever met. They always smile and say “hello”. Kathy and I can only speak a few words of Thai, so smiling is the best way to show our kindness. [2019·四川邻水实验学校月考]When my brother and I were young, my mum would take us on Transportation Days.

It goes like this: You can't take any means of transportation more than once. We would start from home, walking two blocks to the rail station. We'd take the train into the city centre, then a bus, switching to the tram, then maybe a taxi. We always considered taking a horse carriage in the historic district, but we didn't like the way the horses were treated, so we never did. At the end of the day, we took the subway to our closest station, where Mum's friend was waiting to give us a ride home — our first car ride of the day.

The good thing about Transportation Days is not only that Mum taught us how to get around. She was born to be multimodal (多方式的). She understood that depending on cars only was a failure of imagination and, above all, a failure of confidence — the product of a childhood not spent exploring subway tunnels.

Once you learn the route map and step with certainty over the gap between the train and the platform, nothing is frightening anymore. New cities are just lightrail lines to be explored. And your personal car, if you have one, becomes just one more tool in the toolbox — and often an inadequate one, limiting both your mobility and your wallet.

On Transportation Days, we might stop for lunch on Chestnut Street or buy a new book or toy, but the transportation was the point. First, it was exciting enough to watch the world speed by from the train window. As I got older, my mum helped me unlock the mysteries that would otherwise have paralyzed my first attempts to do it myself: How do I know where to get off? How do I know how much it costs? How do I know when I need tickets, and where to get them? What track, what line, which direction, where's the stop, and will I get wet when we go under the river?

I'm writing this right now on an airplane, a means we didn't try on our Transportation Days and, we now know, the dirtiest and most polluting of them all. My flight routed me through Philadelphia. My multimodal mum met me for dinner in the airport. She took a train to meet me.

【语篇解读】 主题:人与自我(生活);话题:交通日。本文是一篇记叙文。作者小时候,在交通日那天,母亲总带着作者和弟弟乘坐火车、公共汽车、出租车等,让他们感受到了自信与快乐。

28.Which was forbidden by Mum on Transportation Days?

A.Having a car ride.

B.Taking the train twice.

C.Buying more than one toy.

D.Touring the historic district.

答案与解析:B 细节理解题。根据第二段中的“... You can't take any means of transportation more than once.”可知,母亲禁止乘坐任何交通工具超过一次,故B项“乘坐两次火车”是母亲禁止的。

29.According to the writer, what was the greatest benefit of her Transportation Days?

A.Building confidence in herself.

B.Reducing her use of private cars.

C.Developing her sense of direction.

D.Giving her knowledge about vehicles.

答案与解析:A 细节理解题。根据第三段中的“... above all, a failure of confidence — the product of a childhood not spent exploring subway tunnels.”可知,作者认为最大的受益在于增强自信。

30.Which means of transportation does the writer probably disapprove of (不赞成)?

A.Airplane. B.Subway.

C.Tram. D.Car.

Dear Jim

I'm happy to receive your letter and know you're coming to China.

Of the two trips, to the Yangtze River and Mount Tai, both are highly recommended. Personally, I prefer the tour along the Yangtze, the longest river and one of the mother rivers of Chinese civilization. You can learn a lot about the history of China and Chinese people. Moreover, the scenery along the river is amazing, with many wellknown sightseeing spots. That's why I think the trip along the Yangtze will be a better choice.

Hope you'll have a good time in China.

Yours

Li Hua

[2019·浙江温州九校期末]Jenny was the only child in her home. She had a quarrel with her mother that_afternoon and she ran out of the house angrily. She couldn't help weeping sorrowfully when she thought of the_scolding_from_her_mother. Having wandered aimlessly in_the_street for hours, she felt a little hungry and wished for something to eat, but it was not even possible for her, since she had nothing with her. She stood beside a stand for a while, watching the middleaged seller busy doing his business. However, with no money in hand, she sighed and had to leave.

The seller behind the stand noticed the young girl and asked, “Hey, girl, you want to have the noodles?”

“Oh, yes... but I don't have money on me...” she replied.

“That's nothing. I'll treat you today, ” said the man. “Come in.”

The seller brought her a bowl of noodles, whose smell was so attractive. As she was eating, Jenny cried silently.

“What is it?” asked the man kindly.

“Nothing, actually I was just touched by your kindness!” said Jenny as she wiped her tears. “Even a stranger on the street will give me a bowl of noodles, while my mother, drove me out of the house. She showed no care for me. She is so merciless compared to a stranger!”

Hearing the words, the seller smiled,_“Girl, do you really think so? I only gave you a bowl of noodles and you thanked me a lot. But it is your mother who has raised you since you were a baby. Can you number the times she cooked for you? Have you expressed your gratitude to her?”

Jenny sat there, speechless and numb with shock; she remembered mother's familiar_face and weathered hands. “Why didn't I think of that? A bowl of noodles from a stranger made me feel indebted (感激的), but I have never thanked my mum for what she has done for me.”

On the way home, Jenny made up her mind to make an apology to her mother for her rudeness as soon as she arrived home.

Paragraph 1

Approaching the doorway, Jenny took a deep breath. When she knocked at the door, she found the door was locked and her mother was not in. Tired and sad, she sat down in front of the house. “Where could my mother be?” she wondered. “Was she still angry with me?” Again, the scene of the quarrel appeared in her mind. She remembered her rudeness to her mother. Realising that all the_scolding_from_her_mother was due to the fact that her mother really cared about her, she felt rather ashamed, and tears began to roll down her cheeks.

Paragraph 2

A gentle touch on her hair called her mind back. She raised her head and saw the familiar_face of her mother. “Here you come! I've been looking for you,” she said, tired and relieved. Jenny couldn't help throwing herself into her mother's arms. “Mum, I'm so sorry and thank you for all you have done for me,” she expressed her sincere apology and great gratitude. Hearing this, her mother smiled,_patting her back gently.
