In the spring of that year my heavy drinking had become hopeless. I was alone, and the only creature in the world that I cared about was my cat, Mousse. One July day I locked myself out of my apartment.

The neighbor who helped me get in not only dried my tears, but went on to tell me how his own life as an alcoholic had been filled with such mistakes — and tragedy as well. When he finished, I agreed to go with him to get help.

On Saturday night, though, I changed my mind. Later that night I sat down for a typical evening of TV, and began to watch the film Days of Wine and Roses, the story of a marriage between alcoholics, played by Jack Lemmon and Lee Remake.

In one scene, Lemmon, who plays a recovering alcoholic, tells Remake what will happen if he keeps drinking. Lemmon hits his fist on a table and shouts, “Nothing will have any meaning for you anymore — nothing, NOTHING!”

At that point I recalled a terrible thing: a drunken friend of mine had picked up her beloved small dog and thrown it across the room when she was angry. I looked at my cat. I became afraid that I might hurt Mousse. I knew then I had to accept my neighbor’s offer.

I did, and the churchman convinced me that drinking was harmful. It is 12 years since I stopped drinking. Later I went to college. After graduation I found a job I enjoyed. Then I married and had a happy family. This summer of 2008, I watched that film again. I was still shocked when hearing “Nothing will have any meaning for you anymore”. It was the words that had changed my life.

The history of the English language really started with the arrival of three Germanic tribes who invaded British during the 5th century. At that time British people spoke a Celtic language. But the Celtic speakers were pushed west and north by the invaders---mainly into what is now Wales, Scotland and Ireland. The Angles came into England and their language was called English-from which the words England and English are derived(起源).

Old English(450----1100) The invading Germanic tribes spoke similar languages, which in Britain developed into what we now call Old English. Old English did not sound or look like English today. Native English speakers now would have great difficulty understanding Old English. However, about half of the most commonly used words in Modern English have Old English roots.

Middle English(1100----1500) In 1066 William the Conqueror invaded and conquered England. The new conqueror brought with them a kind of French ,which became the language of the Royal Court, and the ruling and business classes. For a period there was a kind of linguistic class division. The lower classes spoke English and the upper classes spoke French. In the 14th century English became the main language in Britain again. But in the language there were many French words.

Early Modern English (1500----1800) Towards the end of Middle English ,a sudden and distinct change in pronunciation started, with vowels being pronounced shorter and shorter. From the 16th century the British had contact with many peoples from around the world. This, and the Renaissance of Classical learning, meant that many new words and phrases entered the language .The invention of printing also meant that there was now a common language in print. Printing also brought standardization to English. Spelling and grammar became fixed, and the dialect of London ,where most publishing houses were, became the standard .In 1604 the first English dictionary was published.

South African surgeons have carried out the world's first organ transplant from one HIV-positive person to another, in an operation that opens the way to saving thousands of lives.

The South African authorities previously hadn't allowed HIV-positive people to receive transplants or to donate organs---a policy criticized by some people in the medical establishment of a country where one in five adults is HIV-positive .

But the policy was ended last year, opening the way for more operations, and possibly giving HIV-positive patients a greater chance of receiving new kidneys than those not inflected with the AIDS virus, because there are more potential donors.

"HIV patients are at a disadvantage when it comes to getting an organ and dialysis(透析).Even when we try to be fair, they are at a disadvantage competing with people without this disease, "said Dr Elmi Miller." This study opens up a chance to help them, and it even gives them a slight advantage, because of the high number of HIV-positive donors"

According to Miller, if the kidney transplants are successful in the long term it will open the way to transplanting other organs such as livers, which are particularly vulnerable because anti-AIDS drugs can easily damage them.

However, the transplants remain controversial(有争议的)because they almost certainly mean that the receiver will become infected with the virus that has infected the donor. It may be different from the one the receiver carries and increase his or her resistance to anti-AIDS drugs.

There are also concerns that HIV-positive organs could have been damaged by the diseases, making them less lasting as transplants.

But news of the transplants has brought new hope to many. Dr June Fabian, a doctor at Johannesburg Hospital ,said some of her HIV-positive patients stood to benefit from accepting HIV-positive organs.

64. What is the passage mainly about?

Beijing (Reuters)------China wants rich countries to spend 1 percent of their economic worth in helping developing nations fight global warming, and will press for a new international mechanism to spread “green” technology worldwide.

Developed countries’ funding to support developing countries’ response to climate change

should reach 1 percent of the developed countries’ economic worth,” said Gao Guangsheng, a senior Chinese official for climate change policy.

“Current funds to help fight climate change were actually nothing,” Gao said. China will introduce its suggestion in detail at a conference to be attended by the United States, Europe and many rich and poor countries, he said.

Gao’ call means that China wants a more active role in climate change talks.

China’s 1.3 billion people, fast-growing economy and expanding exports have pushed its emissions of greenhouse gases above the United States, according to many experts.

Gao indicated his government would not play purely defensive in the talks, and would press its own demands for a huge increase in the flow of technology and funds to China and other developing nations.

Current climate change agreements demand funds for technology. But Chinese officials have long said that their country’s ability to cut carbon dioxide, the main greenhouse gas from power plants, factories and vehicles, is hampered by a lack of promised technology from the wealthy west.

“Developed countries have not carried out their relevant promises,” Gao said.

At the two-day conference starting on Friday, Chinese Premier Wen Jiabao will give a speech, stressing the seriousness of the government’s technology demands, Gao said.

On Wednesday, China will also issue an official “white paper” on climate change ,introducing its policies and concerns.

68 .From Gao Guangsheng’s words we learn that__________________.

A. emissions of greenhouse gases are increasing fast in developing countries

B. American should reduce emissions of greenhouse gases first

C. China has set an example in reducing emissions of greenhouse gases

D. developed countries have done little to help fight climate change

69. What does the underlined word “hampered” in Paragraph 7 most probably mean?

A. Strengthened B. Prevented C. Encouraged D. Developed

70. The passage mainly tells us that__________________.

A. China urges international cooperation on climate change.

B. developed countries should provide funds and technology for developing countries

C. international cooperation is needed to fight global warning

D. China plays an active part in global warning

II卷(共35分)

第四部分 任务型阅读(共10题:每小题1分,满分10分)

请认真阅读下列短文,并根据所读内容在文章后表格中的空格中填入最适当的单词。每空格1个单词。

Beggars are often seen sitting under blankets with heads bowed as people pass them by in Cambridge’s market center. Some ask people passing by for change and some just sit and wait to be given money. A few use aggressive behaviour to earn money.

To solve the problem of aggressive begging, an “alternative giving ” plan has been suggested. Ten blue money boxes will be placed in busy places such as the market and the railway station. It aims to encourage people not to give money directly to beggars but instead to give generously to local homeless causes.

Supporters of this plan think it will be an effective way to solve the beggars’ alcohol and drug problems. But the police oppose the plan arguing that beggars who do not receive cash may turn to criminality to feed their addictions. The homeless charity “Crisis” said the success of any plan will depend on its style. They think that imaginative and positive plans can help create local understanding and sympathy instead of hardness. Most of the beggars dislike the planbecause they think they will not get enough money from the boxes for their showers, food and clothes.

Begging is a big social problem both in developing and developed countries. Governments must play a big role in solving this problem. Training beggars to work and helping them to find appropriate jobs is one option. This is especially true for developing countries where many low-skill jobs exist.

The general community should also be educated to see beggars not as dirty and dangerous, but as people who need understanding and help.

Success

What is success? People hold different views on it. Some think that one is successful if he can make a great deal of money. Others argue that success means holding an important government post. Still others believe that whoever has got high academic title is successful.

However, successful people usually have some good qualities in common. You should first of all be both perseverant and hardworking. As you know, whatever you do, there are always two possible results: success and failure. When you fail, you should never lose heart. You should always keep in mind that failure is the mother of success. In addition, you should pay great attention to your work method. It is necessary for you to sum up your experience constantly and improve the efficiency of your work. Also, it is important for you to get along well with your co-workers, care for each other and help each other. Finally, ……………………………………...

In my opinion, success means achieving brilliant results in one’s work, that is, making outstanding contributions to the development of the country and bringing happiness to the people. That’s the success in one’s life.
