On the other hand, it takes away much good time to think carefully, for talking with our family and for reading books. We sometimes find that we sit in front of a TV set without thinking of anything.

Four ways to have a good school life

Your schooldays should be some of the best and happiest days of your life. How can you get the most from them, and be sure you do not waste(浪费)this great chance to learn?

Be active(积极的)at school. Don't say things are difficult or boring. Take interest in school life and your school subjects. Join lots of activities. Put up your hands quickly in class. Have a smile on your face every day.

Keep fit. If you don't eat a good breakfast, you will be thinking about food in class. If you go to bed late and don't have enough sleep, you will be sleepy in class. Play enough sports every day in order to keep your body strong.

Face the problem. Do not say you will do things tomorrow. Everyone fails some exams, loses some matches and has bad days. But don't make small problems very big and important. Don't forget to ask for help if you can't solve your problems. You are young, and no one thinks you must do everything quite well!

Spend the weekends. Don't waste time lying in bed on Saturday or Sunday morning. Go and play sports, get together with friends in the park to relax, to play the piano, or help someone with problem. If you don't want to go out, there are also a lot of things to do. You may read a book, practise English or help with the housework.

Follow our advice, and have a happy school life!

Eric and Chen first met in their Maths class at an American college. Chen was an international student from China.  He wanted to learn about American culture and hoped he and Eric would become good friends. At first, Eric seemed friendly. He always greeted Chen warmly before class. Sometimes he offered to study with Chen. He even invited Chen to eat lunch with him. But after the term was over and they were in different classes, Eric seemed more distant.  They didn't see each other very much at college. One day Chen called Eric, but Eric didn't seem very interested in talking to him. Chen was hurt by Eric's change of attitude(态度)."Eric said we were friends," Chen said. "I thought friends were friends forever. " As a foreigner, he doesn't understand the way Americans view friendship.

Americans use the word "friend" in a very general way. Their friendship is based on common interests.  When the shared activity ends, the friendship may die.  Now as Eric and Chen are no longer classmates, their "friendship" has changed.

In some cultures friendship means a strong long-life tie between two people-friendship develops slowly, since it is built to last. But American society changes quickly. One fifth of American families move every year.  American friendship develops quickly, and it may change just as quickly.

Learning how Americans view friendship can help non Americans remove misunderstandings(误解).It can help them make friends in the American way.

  1   Americans view friendship

Who?

Chen: a   2   college student in the US

Eric: an American college student

to Chen. Chen was hurt.

The explanation

In some cultures friendship develops   7   : it means a strong

long life tie between two people.

American society changes quickly.    8   per cent of American

families move every year. Their friendship develops quickly and

may   9   just as quickly.

Around the world, people have different ideas about what good manners(礼仪)are.

When you go to restaurants in different parts of the world, it's important to know the right and wrong things to do. ( 2 ) For example, in China it's OK to make a lot of noise in a restaurant. In fact, if a restaurant isn't noisy and lively, you may think there's something wrong with it.  However, in many Western countries, restaurants are quiet places. If a table is too loud, other people who are eating there will be unhappy.

    (1) Paying the bill(账单)is also       from country to country.  In China one person usually pays for       . In Western countries, if friends eat together, they usually share the cost. This is called "go Dutch".  Also, when Westerners pay the bill, they usually leave some money for the waiter. This is called "leaving a tip(小费) ". Leaving a tip is thought to be polite.

The way people eat food is different in the world, but you can find the same kinds of food in many countries.  Chinese and Italian food,  for example, are popular all over the world.

1. People have different ideas about what good manners(礼仪)are          the world

Have you ever had problems in your life and don't know how to be happy? If so, you will find Being a Happy Teenager written by an Australian writer Andrew Matthews.

In his book, Matthews tells us how to have a happy life and answers the questions of teenagers.

There are many problems, such as subjects, parents and friends, and the book says we should stop being angry and should forgive(原谅).The book tells us some useful skills, such as how to put what you have learned into pictures of your mind to make your memory better.

Many teenagers think that happiness comes from a good exam result or praise(赞扬)from other people.  But you can still be happy when there are no such "good" things.

Success comes from a good attitude(态度).If you learn from problems, you will have success in the future.

Some school students have problems, such as being too tall or too short. But Matthews tells us that happiness comes from thinking in a positive(积极的)way. If you are tall, people notice you and you can get a better view(视线)at the movie; if you are short, your clothes and shoes take less room in your bedroom!

This is Matthews' most important lesson; You choose to be happy!

You may already know that hurricanes are storms that can cause devastating(毁灭性的)waves, wind, and rain.  They happen during "Hurricane Season", which is from June 1st until November 30th in the Atlantic Ocean and from May 15th until November 30th in the Pacific Ocean.

Categories(类别)of Hurricanes: There are five categories of hurricanes, which are based on wind speeds. The categories help people know how much damage(危害)a hurricane may cause because the greater the wind speed, the more dangerous the storm is. For example, a Category 5 hurricane has winds over 155 miles per hour, which are strong enough to destroy the buildings along the shorelines completely.

Hurricane Dangers: When a hurricane happens together with heavy rainfall, there can be a devastating flood. The centre of a hurricane is called the eye. While most of a hurricane has dangerously strong winds, the eye is actually(事实上) a calm area in the storm.  When the eye of a hurricane passes over land, people might think that it's over, but before long the wind and rain increase again as the second part of the hurricane moves through.

Hurricane Safety Tips: There is no way to stop a hurricane or make it change direction, so if you ever find yourself in the path of a hurricane, be sure to remember the following safety tips.

Be sure you have a radio, batteries, fresh drinking water, and enough food.

Tell neighbours, friends, and family members your emergency plans. Tell them where you'll go if you need to leave your home.

If you live near the ocean, leave your home and travel to a safe place. You could stay with a friend or a family member, in a hotel or in an emergency shelter area.

Stay inside during the storm. You could be seriously injured(受伤)if you go outside.

Everyone needs friends. A friend can give us help and share our difficulties and happiness. But how can we make friends

First, to make friends, you must be friendly to others. Smile at others and you are sure to get a smile in return.  You should try to make a stranger feel at home wherever he happens to be. Think more of others than of yourself and never judge a person by his appearance and clothes.

Second, friends should negotiate(商量)instead of quarrel(争吵)When you don't agree with someone, please discuss with him.

Finally, never believe in those who leave you when you are in trouble. And never leave your friend when he is in trouble.  Remember, a friend in need is a friend indeed.

Friends should be faithful to each other. So long as you can put your friend's interests in front of yours, you will have a lot of good friends.

1. Why do we need friends?
