Section B (10%)

Directions: Complete the following passage by using the words in the box. Each word can only be used once. Note that there is one word more than you need.

A. varying B. mapping C. platform D. unconditional E. highlight F. definitely

G. challenge H. unbelievably I. ground-breaking J. bitter K. misunderstandings

''Why don't you ever do what I tell you?'' Heard by all children from a caregiver at some point in their lives. Surely, this rings a bell, but how did you respond? ''It's my life...I can do what I want!'' Possibly. Yet I am going to guess that, at the very least, you have 1 thought about responding with such a retort(回嘴).

Social media provides a convenient 2 for people to talk about their daily lives. In this regard, Wang Meng, a now-notorious young man, put a cat amongst the pigeons recently with his 3 complaints about family constraints going viral throughout Chinese cyberspace. In his post on Weibo, Wang reflected on his childhood by essentially accusing his parents of exhibiting excessive measures out of control, 4 out his future and ultimately affecting his mental health, which has resulted in Wang boycotting a family reunion for the past 12 years!

Whether he should have aired his dirty laundry in public is subjective to the reader, but ignoring the issue by allowing it to intensify over a long period of time was surely an error on Wang's part. Parental love is 5 --- caregivers always want what is best for their children -- yet families come in all shapes and sizes, with 6 problems inevitably arising. The key here is communication.

Communicating with others is a basic human instinct. Renowned psychologist John Bowlby, in his 7 work called the maternal deprivation theory, highlights the reciprocal (相互的)nature of human interaction between a child at birth and its main caregiver. Aristotle stated that "man is by nature a social animal." A human's disposition(天性), therefore, is to question, analyze and even 8 different opinions.

Of course, my family got on my nerves at times. However, as the famous saying goes, ''you

can choose your friends but you can't choose your family.'' Disagreements and 9 are bound to happen along the way, but children should be encouraged to talk to their parents in a polite and respectful manner, and it is important to engage with loved ones as early as possible.

Rather than viewing Wang's self-reflection in a negative light, we should focus on the main reason why he wrote such a piece. I believe Wang wrote the article as be wanted to forewarn others of acting in this way and also to 10 the need for opening the lines of communication with one’s family--before it is too late.

Section B

Directions: Read the following three passages. Each passage is followed by several questions or unfinished statements. For each of them there are four choices marked A, B, C and D. Choose the one that fits best according to the information given in the passage you have read.

(A)

Scattered around the globe are more than 100 small regions of isolated volcanic activity known to geologists as hot spots. Unlike most of the world's volcanoes, they are not always found at the boundaries of the great drifting plates that make up the earth's surface; on the contrary, many of them lie deep in the interior of a plate. Most of the hot spots move only slowly, and in some cases the movement of the plates past them has left trails of dead volcanoes. The hot spots and their volcanic trails are milestones that mark the passage of the plates.

That the plates are moving is not beyond dispute. Africa and South America, for example, are moving away from earth other as new material is injected into the sea floor between them. The complementary coastlines and certain geological features that seem to span the ocean are reminders of where the two continents were once joined. The relative motion of the plates carrying these continents has been constructed in detail, but the motion of one plate with respect to another cannot readily be translated into motion with respect to the earth's interior. It is not possible to determine whether both continents are moving in opposite directions or whether one continent is stationary and the other is drifting away from it. Hot spots, anchored in the deeper layers of the earth, provide the measuring instruments needed to resolve the question. From an analysis of the hot spot population it appears that the African plate is stationary and that it has not moved during the past 30 million years.

The significance of hot spots is not confined to their role as a frame of reference. It now appears that they also have an important influence on the geophysical processes that propel the plates across the globe. When a continental plate come to rest over a hot spot, the material rising from deeper layer creates a broad dome. As the dome grows, it develops seed fissurescracks; in at least a few cases the continent may break entirely along some of these fissures, so that the hot spot initiates the formation of a new ocean. Thus just as earlier theories have explained the mobility of the continents, so hot spots may explain their mutabilityinconstancy.

1. We can learn from the first paragraph that_____ .

A. there are no volcanic activities on hot spot

B. most hot spots are located in the inner part of a plate

C. hot spots usually lie at the boundaries of drifting plate

D. the passage of plates through hot spots will leave dead volcanoes

2. That Africa and South America were once joined can be deduced from the fact that _____ .

A. the two continents are still moving in opposite directions

B. they have been found to share certain geological features

C. the African plates has been stable for 30 million years

D. over 100 hot spots are scattered all around the globe

3. The hot spot theory may prove useful in explaining _____ .

A. the structure of the African plates   B. the revival of dead volcanoes

C. the mobility of the continents     D. the formation of new oceans

4. The passage is mainly about _____ .

A. the features of volcanic activities

B. the importance of the theory about drifting plates

C. the significance of hot spots in geophysical studies

D. the process of the formation of volcanoes

B 2. B 3. D 4. C

1. B. 通过第一段的第二句they are not always found at the boundaries of the great drifting plates that make up the earth's surface; on the contrary, many of them lie deep in the interior of a plate.

(B)

It’s an annual argument. Do we or do we not go on holiday? My partner says no because the boiler could go, or the roof fall off, and we have no savings to save us. I say you only live once and we work hard and what’s the point if you can’t go on holiday. The joy of a recession means no argument next year – we just won’t go.

Since money is known to be one of the things most likely to bring a relationship to its knees, we should be grateful. For many families the recession means more than not booking a holiday. A You Gov poll of 2,000 people found 22% said they were arguing more with their partners because of concerns about money. What’s less clear is whether divorce and separation rates rise in a recession – financial pressures mean couples argue more but make splitting up less affordable. A recent research shows arguments about money were especially damaging to couples. Disputes were characterized by intense verbal aggression, tended to be repeated and not resolved, and made men, more than women, extremely angry.

Kim Stephenson, an occupational psychologist, believes money is such a big deal because of what it symbolises, which may be different things to men and women. “People can say the same things about money but have different ideas of what it’s for,” he explains. “They’ll say it’s to save, to spend, for security, for freedom, to show someone you love them.” He says men are more likely to see money as a way of buying status and of showing their parents that they’ve achieved something.

“The biggest problem is that couples assume each other knows what’s going on with their finances, but they don’t. There seems to be more of a taboo about talking about money than about death. But you both need to know what you’re doing, who’s paying what into the joint account and how much you keep separately. In a healthy relationship, you don’t have to agree about money, but you have to talk about it.”

1.   What does the author say about vacationing?

A. People enjoy it all the more during a recession.

B. Few people can afford it without working hard.

C. It is the chief cause of family disputes.

D. It makes all the hard work worthwhile.

2.   What does the author mean by saying “money is known ... to bring a relationship to its knees” (Lines 1, Para. 2)?

A. Money is considered to be the root of all evils.

B. Disputes over money may ruin a relationship.

C. Few people can resist the temptation of money.

D. Some people sacrifice their dignity for money.

3.   The author suggests at the end of the passage that couples should ________.

A. put their money together instead of keeping it separately

B. discuss money matters to maintain a healthy relationship

C. make efforts to reach agreement on their family budgets

D. avoid arguing about money matters to remain romantic

I say you only live once and we work hard and what's the point if you can't go on holiday."

What’s less clear is whether divorce and separation rates rise in a recession—financial pressures mean couples argue more...

In a healthy relationship, you don't have to agree about money, but you have to talk about it."可知作者认为夫妇应该就钱的问题多讨论这样可以建立健康的关系。选B.

(C)

It would be all too easy to say that Facebook 's market meltdown is coming to an end. After all, Mark Zuckerberg's social network burned as much as $ 50 billion of shareholders’ wealth in just a couple months. To put that in context, since its debut on NASDAQ in May, Facebook has lost value nearly equal to Yahoo, AOL, Zynga, Yelp, Pandora, OpenTable, Groupon, LinkedIn, and Angie's List combined, plus that of the bulk of the publicly traded newspaper industry.

As shocking as this utter failure may be to the nearly 1 billion faithful Facebook users around the world, it’s no surprise to anyone who read the initial public offering (IPO) prospectus Worse still, all the crises that emerged when the company debuted-overpriced shares, poor corporate governance, huge challenges to the core business, and a damaged brand-remain today. Facebook looks like a prime example of what Wall Street calls a falling knife-that is, one that can cost investors their fingers if they try to catch it.

Start with the valuation. To justify a stock price close to the lower end of the projected range in the IPO, say $ 28 a share, Facebook's future growth would have needed to match that of Google seven years earlier. That would have required increasing revenue by some 80 percent annually and maintaining high profit margins all the while.

That’s not happening. In the first half of 2012, Facebook reported revenue of $ 2.24 billion, up 38 percent from the same period in 2011. At the same time, the company's costs surged to $ 2.6 billion in the six-month period.

This so-so performance reflects the Achilles' heel of Facebook 's business model, which the company clearly stated in a list of risk factors associated with its IPO: it hasn't yet figured out how to advertise effectively on mobile devices, The number of Facebook users accessing the site on their phones surged by67 percent to 543 million in the last quarter, or more than half its customer base.

Numbers are only part of the problem. The mounting pile of failure creates a negative feedback loop that threatens Facebook 's future in other ways. Indeed, the more Facebook 's disappointment in the market is cataloged, the worse Facebook 's image becomes. Not only does that threaten to rub off on users, it’s bad for recruitment and retention of talented hackers, who are the lifeblood of Zuckerberg's creation.

Yet the brilliant CEO can ignore the sadness and complaints of his shareholders thanks to the super- voting stock he holds. This arrangement also was fully disclosed at the time of the offering. It’s a pity so few investors apparently bothered to do their homework.

1. What can be inferred about Facebook from the first paragraph?

A. Its market meltdown has been easily halted.

B. It has increased trade with the newspaper industry.

C. It has encountered utter failure since its stock debut.

D. Its shareholders have invested $50 billion in a social network.

2. To make its stock price reasonable, Facebook has to ______.

A. narrow the IPO B. cooperate with Google

C. keep enormously profitable D. invest additional $2.6 billion

3. It can be inferred from the context that the “Achilles’ heel” (line 1, para 5) refer to_______.

A. Deadly weakness B. big difference

C. Indisputable fact D. potential risk

4. What effect will Facebook's failure in the market have?

A. Its users' benefits will be threatened.

B. Talented hackers will take down the website.

C. The CEO will hold the super-voting stock.

D. The company's innovation strengthen will be damaged.

C 2. C 3. A 4. D

Facebook has lost value nearly equal to Yahoo,

To justify a stock price close to the lower end of the projected range in the IPO...That would have required increasing revenue by some 80 percent annually and maintaining high profit margins all the while.

从第五段可知Facebook有致命的缺点,如it hasn't yet figured out how to advertise effectively on mobile devices,所以选A.

The mounting pile of failure creates a negative feedback loop that threatens Facebook 's future in other ways可知它的失败造成的最大的影响是公司的创新能力。

Section C

Directions: Complete the following passage by using the sentences given below. Each sentence can be used only once. Note that there are two more sentences than you need.

A. In China, this breed boomed in recent years and became a status symbol for the wealthy.

B. A new CCTV program showed an example in Nangqen Country, Qinghai province.

C. In addition to stocks and real estates, they became preferred pets and investments opinions for the country's rich.

D. These breeds may seem pricy, but some other dog have been sold for a lot more.

E. However, a Tibetan Mastiff craze began sweeping China in 1990s.

F. Unfortunately, like all fads, the Tibetan Mastiff, once a highly-desirable accessory for rich Chinese people to show off their wealth, has lost its charm.

How much did you purchase your dog for? One of the most popular breeds in China, the Labrador Retriever, sells from 4,500 yuan to 8,000 yuan for a purebred pup. Similarly, German Shepherds go for around 2,000 yuan to 6,000 yuan. ____1_____One breed in particular gained huge popularity, which has ironically led to its demise(消亡).

The Tibetan Mastiff(藏獒), also known as the iron dog, is an ancient dog breed originating from Central Asia. This is massive dog weighing around 65 to 80 kilograms, with a luxuriously long coat that contributes to its lion-like appearance._____2____

In 2011, an 11-month-old Tibetan Mastiff named Big Splash made headline for fetching a staggering(惊人的) 10 million yuan. Sales like this caused a surge in the breeding of these dogs as many wannabe breeders hoped to get rich quickly. Normally, a pure-blood mastiff could be sold for 30,000to 50,000 yuan at the peak of the market, with some famous breeds selling for more than 200,000 yuan.

____3_____The bubble has burst and the once-hot market has turned freezing cold. Some breeders have resorted to getting rid of their dogs by selling them to slaughterhouses(屠宰场) to be made into leather. The breed that once sold for billions now only sells for about 1000 yuan. Many breeders are now stuck with unwanted dog and are struggling to make ends meet.

The world's most expensive dos are now being thrown away like used tissues.______4___The local Surmang Temple each raised 200,000 yuan to build a dog shelter in 2015, which received about 1,200 stray dog within only two weeks.

Buying into popular trends has garnered some severe consequences for the Tibetan Mastiff. Hopefully someday, this majestic breed will be able to regain some of its past glory and be seen only as a pet not the lining for winter gloves.

D 2. A 3. F 4. B

D. These breeds may seem pricy, but some other dog have been sold for a lot more.

A. this breed boomed in recent years and became a status symbol for the wealthy.

The bubble has burst and the once-hot market has turned freezing cold可知藏獒已经不再像以前一样吸引人了,所以选F, 是本段的总结句。

The world's most expensive dos are now being thrown away like used tissues,所以该空填B选项A new CCTV program showed an example in Nangqen Country, Qinghai province,是对第一句的举例,同时,空格后面的The local Surmang Temple each raised...

John and Bobby joined a wholesale company together just after graduation from college the same Year. Both worked very hard. After several years, however, the boss promoted Bobby to the position of manager but John remained an ordinary employee. John could not take it any more, tendered his resignation to the boss and complained the boss did not know how to delegate and did not value hard-working staff, but only promoted those who flattered him.

The boss knew that John worked very hard for the years. He thought a moment and said, “Thank you for your criticism, but I have a request. I hope you will do one more thing for our company before you leave Perhaps you will change your decision and take back your resignation.”

John agreed. The boss asked him to go and find out anyone selling watermelon in the market. John went and returned soon. He said he had found out a man selling watermelon. The boss asked how much per kg. John shook his head and went back to the market to ask and returned to inform the boss $1.2 per kg.

Boss told John to wait a second, and he called Bobby to come to his office. He asked Bobby to go and find anyone selling watermelon in the market. Bobby went, returned and said, “Boss, only one person selling watermelon. $1.2 per kg, $10 for 10 kg, he has inventory (清单) of 340 melons. On the table 58 melons, bought from the South two days ago, they are fresh and red, good quality.”

John was very impressed and realized the difference between himself and Bobby. He decided not to resign but to learn from Bobby.

Chances exist in the daily details. For the same matter, a more successful person sees more and farther so that he can find out an opportunity and catch it to realize his aim. If a person sees one year ahead, while another sees only tomorrow. Then the difference between a year and a day is 365 times!
