My love for dogs goes as far back as my first memory. As a little girl, I collected dog toys. At 5

years old, I was ready and willing to run away with the family dog afier the threat of giving him away

when he chewed up the sofa. Luckily he stayed and my affection for man's best friend continued. As an

adult, my reasons for wanting to adopt a dog were purely selfish. I wanted a companion. I wanted a

young, energetic dog that would need long walks or runs to help keep mc active to stick to an exercise

routine.

Little did I know that my four-legged friend and love for dogs would help me feel more at home in

and fall in love with my Shanghai community. It seemed to me that being a tall blonde didn't already

attract a lot of curious stares; add a 12-kilogram black dog that believes everyone is his best friend to

the picture and locals seem even more intrigued. The decision to adopt Xiao Hei definitely fulfilled

those early selfish desires, but the experience has also brought me closer to my neighbors and made me

feel more at home.

A few months after I first brought Xiao Hei home, I spotted the group of elderly Chinese people

who gather at the park. After realizing they go there most weeknights, I decided it would be a good way

to help Xiao Hei socialize with other dogs. After a few visits, it was not only an opportunity for him to

play but also a chance for me to practice my Chinese. "Most Chinese give their dogs English names, but

you've given him a Chinese name. Very interesting," they laughed. With that simple laugh, it seemed

that barriers were broken and with each visit I felt more a part of the community.

24. Why did the author want to adopt a dog?

A. To practice Chinese. B. To understand Chinese culture.

C, To feel at home. D. To find a companion.

25. Who is likely to be the author of the text?

A. A Shanghai native. B. A Chinese dog lover.

C. A foreigner in Shanghai. D. A researcher on Chinese culture.

26. The underlined word "intrigued" in Paragraph 2 probably means _ .

A. interested B. excited C. satisfied D. frightened

27. What can be inferred from the text'?

A. The author once left home with her dog.

B. The author gets along well with her neighbors.

C. The author is good at the Chinese language.

D. The author will settle in Shanghai forever.

C

The chances are that you've walked past a QR Code(二维码) or come into contact with one

recently, possibly without noticing. Even if you haven't seen one before, here are some examples for

you

But what exactly are QR Codes? Very simple, they are bar-codes, not too dissimilar to the

bar-codes you saw on the package of almost every product you bought. QR Codes are combined with

multiple rows and columns ( ) , which allows QR Code to store its data.

QR Codes started out in the East but their popularity exploded worldwide within a few years. They

are flexible, cheap, easy to read by scanners as simple as an App on your smart phone and easy for

anybody to create. The direction of reading the QR codes is not limited. Even when damaged there is a

chance that they are still readable. Unlike traditional bar-codes which are l dimensional (using l row

of lines) , QR Codes use 2 dimensions, which allows them to store a lot more data in the same area of

space.

But can a picture or music be stored in a QR Code? Images and sounds consume much more data

than text and a QR Code is limited to storing 3kb of data. The size of an image will need to be made so

small to be stored that it will be impractical to do so. So it is with songs. In fact if you have a need to

present the user with an image or kick off a music stream when they scan your QR Code, why not look

to host it somewhere and then have your QR code simply linked to the content?

Not only have QR Codes surely brought us great convenience, but also security concerns at the

same time. For example, a QR Code may be covered by one designed by a cheater on purpose, without

being recognized. You sign up entering all your account details only to find the following day someone

has gained access to your account because of the information you entered in that website.

28. What do we know about QR Codes?

A. They can be scanned from any direction. B. They use l row of lines to store data.

C. They are readable when damaged. D. They are flexible but not cheap.

29. Which is one big drawback of QR Codes?

A. A QR Code can be linked to somewhere else.

B. QR Codes cannot be used to present a picture.

C. A QR Code can store data of no more than 3kb.

D. QR Codes can only be read with an app on your smart phone.

30. From the text we can infer that .

A. traditional bar-codes have an advantage over QR codes in storing data

B. QR Codes are so dangerous that they are not worth using

C. it makes sense to store a song of a picture in a QR code

D. we had better pay attention to the security when using QR codes

31. The text mainly talks about .

A. the use of QR Codes B. the disadvantages of QR Codes

C.. the advantages of QR Codes D. the formation of QR Codes

D

A new study shows students who write notes by hand during lectures perform better on exams than

those who use laptops (笔记本电脑) .

Students are increasingly using laptops for note-taking because of speed and legibility(清晰度). But

the research has found laptop users arc less able to remember and apply the concepts they have been

taught.

Researchers performed experiments that aimed to find out whether using a laptop increased the

tendency to make notes "mindlessly" by taking down word for word what the professor said.

In the first experiment, students were given either a laptop or pen and paper. They listened to the

same lectures and were told to use their usual note-taking skills. Thirty minutes after the talk, they were

examined on their ability to remember facts and on how well they understood concepts.

The researchers found that laptop users took twice as many as notes as those who wrote by hand,

However, the typists performed worse at remembering and applying the concepts. Both groups scored

similarly when it came to memorizing facts.

The researchers' report said, "While more notes are beneficial, if the notes are taken mindlessly, as

is more likely the case on a laptop, the benefit disappears."

In another experiment aimed at testing long-term memory, students took notes as before but were

tested a week after the lecture. This time, the students who wrote notes by hand performed significantly

better on the exam.

These two experiments suggest that handwritten notes are not only better for immediate learning

and understanding, but that they also lead to superior revision in the future.

32. More and more students favor laptops for note-taking because they can _

A. write more notes B. digest concepts better

C. get higher scores D. understand lectures better

33. While taking notes, laptop users tend to be .

A. skillful B. mindless C. thoughtful D. tireless

34. The author of the passage aims to____.

A. examine the importance of long-term memory

B. stress the benefit of taking notes by hand

C. explain the process of taking notes

D. promote the use of laptops

35. The passage is likely to appear in____.

A. a newspaper advertisement B. a computer textbook

C. a science magazine. D. a finance report

第二节(共5小题,每小题2分,满分10分)

根据短文内容,从短义后的选项中选出能填入空白处的最佳选项。选项中有两项为多余选项。

Have you ever considered volunteering? It gives you a chance to give back. You'll feel a sense of

pride that you are volunteering your time, and a local organization will benefit, too. But how to

volunteer? Follow the three steps before you enjoy it.

Pick an organization. 36 You're likely to be happier and volunteer longer at an

organization that supports a cause you care about. For example, if you're interested in animal welfare,

maybe you want to volunteer at an animal shelter. Much like job search sites, you can also use

volunteer websites like Volunteer Match or Serve.gov to help you find volunteer opportunities in your

area. If you still can't narrow down where you want to volunteer, start asking people you know where

they volunteer. 37

Be clear what you can offer. First identify your skills. For example, maybe you could write

brochures for local nonprofits if writing is your style. 3 8 You need to be sure how much time you

can give to an organization based on your other commitments. If you try to do too much, you 're more

likely to give up.

39 Treat the application like a job. Spend some time preparing for the interview, much as you

would for a job interview. 40 Ask what's expected of volunteers. For instance, volunteers at a

museum may be expected to learn parts of the galleries to give tours. Start volunteering slowly. That is,

it's better to commit to just a little bit of time at first to see if you like volunteering at the organization.

A. Apply and get started.

B. Volunteer in person or online,

C. Then don't forget to review your weekly schedule.

D. You'd better focus on the causes you like very much.

E. You may find one of them has the perfect opportunity for you.

F It is also a time for you to assess whether the organization is fit for you.

G First find an organization that's a good fit for you, and then decide what you have to offer.
