豫园

Yuyuan Garden

Yuyuan Garden which is located in the south downtown of Shanghai is a famous classical garden. The former owner of the gardenwhose family name is Pan, was a Buzheng Shi (the chief executive) of Sichuan Province in Ming Dynasty. The construction of the garden started in 1858, but it was not completed until twenty years later because it went on and off for lack of money. Later, it was bought by some businessmen at a low price from his desperate descendents when the family went into a decline. Some years after that it was incorporated into the City God Temple and became its West Garden. During the Opium War and the Taiping Revolution, the garden suffered repeated devastation by foreign aggressors (stationed there) and, consequently, lost much of its original grandeur.

After the Liberation, Yuyuan Garden received restoration for several times concerned by the People’s Government, among of which the latest time was in 1987 when its east and west parts were successfully renewed. As one of the best of its kind in the south of China, the garden was listed in the key cultural protection units by the State Council of PRC in 1982. With over 40 scenic spots, such as pavilions and platforms, ponds and rockeries, the garden draws over 10,000 visitors every day. No wonder people say, You cant claim to have been to Shanghai without visiting Yu Yuan Garden and the City God Temple Bazaar.

In front of the garden, there is a lotus pond with a pavilion in the middle of the bridge across, called the Mid-lake Pavilion, which was rebuilt in 1784It became a teahouses 90 years ago. This famous tea-house is a favourite place for the elderly people, where they can enjoy chat leisurely with a cup of tea. Under the tea-house, there is a zigzag bridge, on which tourists can take a stroll and enjoy the beautiful scenery from different angles. On special occasions, such as festival of lanterns, there are celebrations outside the garden, which make the garden an even more exciting place.
