Drill 1．Learning a foreign language has been a most trying experience for me, but one that I wouldn’t trade for anything. Not only did learning another language teach me the value of hard work, but it also gave me insights into another culture, and my mind was opened to new ways of seeing things. The most wonderful result of having learned a foreign language was that I could communicate with many more people than before. Talking with people is one of my favorite activities, so being able to speak a new language lets me meet new people, participate in conversations, and form new, unforgettable friendships. Now that I speak a foreign language, instead of staring into space when English is being spoken, I can participate and make friends. I am able to reach out to others and bridge the gap between my language and culture and theirs.Drill 2. Many studies on youth also refute the concept of a generation gap. These studies show that while young people tend to value their peers’ evaluations over parents’ on things like music, clothing and what’s “cool”, they continue to look to parents for basic values and guidance in the more important areas of life, such as career and lifetime goals. Of course, general trends can’t always be applied to individual cases. It is natural to feel like there is an uncomfortable “gap” between our teens and us and that there is a need to bridge it. Perhaps, though, the problem does not lie in a difference of opinions or values, but in the way we relate to and communicate with each other. Here are some tips from an article entitled “Bridging the Generation Gap” that might help. Drill 3. He has been gone many years now, but I think of him often. I wonder if he sensed my reluctance to be seen with him during our walks. If he did, I am sorry I never told him how sorry I was, how unworthy I was, how I regretted it. Drill 1. When I travel to Third World countries I see many people like my father and daughter. There are large advertisement signs directed at them both: the tough, confident or fashionable older man, the beautiful, ‘worldly’ young woman, both dragging away. In these poor countries, as in American inner cities and on reservations, money that should be spent for food goes instead to the tobacco companies; over time, people starve themselves of both food and air, effectively weakening and hooking their children, eventually killing themselves. I read in the newspaper and in my gardening magazine that the ends of cigarettes are so poisonous that if a baby swallows one, it is likely to die, and that the boiled water from a bunch of them makes an effective insecticide.

Drill 2. Sometimes you may feel uncertain about whether to give in to many of your children’s requests. That doesn’t mean you can’t change. First, you should try to determine what makes you submit or feel guilty. Then, even if you haven’t uncovered the reason, you should begin to make firm decisions and practice responding to your children’s requests in a prompt, definite manner.

Once you turn over a new leaf, you can’t expect to change completely right away. You are bound to fluctuate at times. The key is to be satisfied with gradual improvement, expecting and accepting the occasional slips that come with any change. And even after you are handling these decisions in a firmer and more confident manner, you can’t expect your children to respond immediately. For a while they’ll keep on applying the old pressures that used to work so well. But they’ll eventually come to respect your decisions once they learn that nagging and arguing no longer work. In the end, both you and your children will be happier for it.

Drill 3. Apparently, such prejudices can affect classroom achievement as well. In a study conducted by Herbert Harari of San Diego State University, and John McDavid of Georgia State University, teachers gave consistently lower grades on essays apparently written by boys named Elmer and Hubert than they awarded to the same papers when the writers’ names were given as Michael and David. However, teacher prejudice isn’t the only source of classroom difference. Dr. Thomas V. Busse and Louisa Seraydarian of Temple University found those girls with names such as Linda, Diane, Barbara, Carol, and Cindy performed better on objectively graded IQ and achievement tests than did girls with less appealing names. (A companion study showed girls’ popularity with their peers was also related to the popularity of their names—although the connection was less clear for boys.)

Drill 4. Workaholics, like those who are constantly drunk, suffer from a controlling habit, usually defined as compelling behavior despite negative consequences. They are sometimes pushed into their habit by their work beliefs, by workaholic role models, and by a work system that automatically sanctions workaholism. Despite lip service to the contrary (“a balanced employee is a productive employee”), most employers want loyal employees who work longer hours, rewarding them with higher pay and better benefits. In many companies, workers unwilling to burn the midnight oil are at risk. Certainly, they hazard their jobs by working normal hours. Americans tend to become trapped in a working and spending consumption mode driven by merchants, which leads them to rack up their expectations.
