Boys like to be considered to be brave, but what kind of things can be considered to be brave? It is not a question that can be answered by words, but by the actual deed. A boy with the name Henry gave us a good example. Ronny and Henry were two friends in the same class. They always played together and went home together. One day as Ronny and Henry were going home after school, they saw some people fighting in the street corner. Ronny said excitedly, “Some people are fighting! Let's go and have a look!” But Henry refused, “It's none of our business. We'd better go home and don't get close to them. Also our parents are expecting to have dinner with us together at home and I don't want them to worry about me.”

“You are a coward, and afraid to go,” said Ronny, and off he ran to the spot with some other boys. Henry had to go home alone and didn't think about it anymore.

But Ronny thought Henry was a coward and told all the boys that. They laughed at him a great deal. From then on, they looked down upon Henry and didn't want to play with him.

Henry was sad but he wasn't angry with Ronny for his rude behavior, because he had learned that true courage was shown most in bearing misunderstanding when it was not deserved, and that he ought to be afraid of nothing but doing wrong. Thus, he just ignored the other boys' laughter and continued to stick to his thought and go to school and study as well. However, Ronny didn't invite Henry to go home with him anymore. Instead, he had his new friends who also thought Henry was a coward. Every day after school, they didn't go home directly but went to the river or somewhere to play games and had lots of fun.

Paragraph 1:

A few days later, something terrible happened to Ronny.

At that moment, Henry happened to pass by.

Possible answer:

A few days later, something terrible happened to Ronny. That afternoon after school, Ronny was bathing with some of his new friends in the river happily. Suddenly, he was stuck in the mud and couldn't get out. He struggled hard but he was still trapped. He screamed for help, but all in vain. The boys who had called Henry a coward got out of the water as fast as they could. They were so scared and did not even try to help him.

At that moment, Henry happened to pass by. He heard the screams and ran to the river as soon as possible. Seeing Ronny was almost drowned, Henry took off his clothes immediately and jumped into the water without any hesitation. He reached Ronny just as he was sinking the last time. With great effort, and with much danger to himself, he brought Ronny to the shore in time. Henry was happy to help his friend, though he was extremely tired.

一、读后续写(25分)

I was doing a big clean-up recently and my kids were helping when my son, Freddo, came across a knotted handkerchief with an old dark brown coin inside. “Mum, can I have this? Can I play with this coin?” he asked. I took one look and was immediately transported to another time.

In 1991,here was a time when my friend and I worked in a backward African country, Niger, hit by sandstorms and burning heat. There were many things I found difficult about this place—the climate and beggarswere my biggest headaches. So after finishing five months of nursing work there, we moved on to work at a health clinic in the neighboring country, Burkina Faso. “It's much greener in Burkina. Even the Coke tastes better,” the locals assured us.

Yet the fact was quite the opposite. Arriving by taxi at our destination in Burkina, we began to unload. I was reaching for my larger piece of luggage when, out of the darkness, a motorbike with two men approached slowly. Without warning, one of the men grabbed my daypack as the motorbike swept close by. Within seconds, the pair were out of sight, swallowed up by the night.

With my passport, money, traveler’s cheques all in the bag, I was in deep trouble. How frustrating!

All I wanted was to leave this hellhole! Then, walking through Burkina's streets one day, I was stopped by an old woman who thrust her hand in my face. “Cadeau (‘gift’ in French)! Cadeau!” she cried. I'd had enough! I was extremely tired of the country: its poverty, its thieves, the heat, the dust and...everything! I told her angrily and firmly in French, “I have no ‘cadeau’. I have no money. A thief stole all my money two weeks ago and now I can't get out of your country. I cannot give you anything. NOTHING!” The beggar woman listened attentively. To my great surprise, after hearing my words, she gave me a broad smile.

Possible answer:

She reached into the pocket of her dress. “Then I will give you a cadeau,” she announced. Kindly, she placed an old dark brown coin in my hand. In surprise, I looked at the coin, and then at the woman. At that moment, I felt rather ashamed, ashamed of my terrible attitude towards the old woman. In spite of her poverty, she was able to give me something priceless. I had taken it for granted that beggars would only receive something from others, yet the coin from the beggar woman in Burkina truly changed my view towards them, and her smile hit the deepest of my heart.

There was a slight touch on my handlooking downI saw my son looking at me,curious. “Mum, can I have this? Can I play with this coin?” he repeated. “You can't play with it, honey,” I touched my son on the head and said slowly, “This one is special. It is an unforgettable precious memory to me. Come and let me tell you a story.”

The eight-year-old Carol lived with her father David, Mother May and elder brother Rob. The little familyhappily lived in a beautiful village surrounded with beautiful nature. The village was at the foot of a mountain, with beautiful views of the snowy mountain. The family survived on growing seasonal plants and trees. Their life is totally surrounded by nature and beauty.

While they lived a very happy life, Carol did not love the beautiful atmosphere of the village. She really wanted to move into the city and enjoy the city life. She wanted to shop, move around the city, watch movies, and eat in fantastic restaurants and cafes, etc.

However, there was hardly any chance that Carol's family moved to the city as they had everything in the village.

One day, Carol fell asleep during the early noon and she had a sound sleep. Of course, she had a strangedream. She saw her grandmother in her dream as a fairy and her deceased grandmother granted her a wish. Carol requested her that she would love to enjoy the city life as she always desired.

Grandmother understood the desire of Carol, but still wanted to convince her that the peaceful village life is better than the city life.

She told Carol, “Baby, you cannot have access to fresh fruits and vegetables from plants as you have at your home. You cannot breathe fresh air. You cannot play with animals. You can hardly find any trees. You will not findpeace as you see here! Do you still want to go to the city?”

Without hearing the concerns, Carol asked her grandmother to grant the wish. Grandmother granted her wish but with a condition. Carol was told that she would only have 6 hours to spend in the city. Later, she would return back to the village. Carol agreed.

Paragraph 2:

Carol's brother Rob was calling her for lunch and Carol woke up.

Possible answer:

Carol then found herself in the city with her friends. Carol and her friends went to watch movies. After that they ate delicious food in a restaurant and shopped in a huge mall. Carol was happy that she had the chance to experience the life in the city. Yet at the same time, she understood that everything told by her grandmother was true in the city. There was no peace and no silence; the city life was fast and rushing. The air quality is not satisfying. She could hardly find any animal or even a tree.

Carol's brother Rob was calling her for lunch and Carol woke up. She recalled what happened just now in her dream and realized that her life in the village with her family was far more wonderful than the city life. Carol understood that she was having a more joyful life. She shared her dream with her family while enjoying the fresh fruits and vegetables, and they laughed together. Carol also developed love for plants, animals and beautiful nature.

“Will you take me to go trick-or-treating, Chad?” Zoe asked when I came home from school. My little sister was already wearing her fairy wings and taking a wand (魔杖).

“Mom's taking you,” I said.“ Mommy slipped on the mat and hurt her ankle,” my sister said. Mom limped(一瘸一拐地走)down the hallway just then, and her left ankle was wrapped in a bandage. “I'll be OK sitting in the car. But could you take Zoe from door to door? She's really been looking forward to Halloween.” “I've been looking forward to it, too,” I said and didn't want anything out of expectation.

I had to admit, though, Zoe was more excited than I was. She'd been trying on her costume(化妆服) every day for a week. “I'm a fairy,” she said, twirling()

around. “I have plans with my friends,” I said. Our plans consisted of racing around the neighborhood to collect as much candy as we could, not bothering too much with costumes.

“Please, Chad,” Zoe begged. “Fine.” There would be my chance for fun and candy, I thought. Zoe twirled on her toes. Later, Zoe walked to the first house while I hung back. “I don't want anyone to know that I'm taking you to go trick-or-treating,” I'd said to her. I'd told my friends that I couldn't hang out with them tonight, but I didn't tell them why, being afraid of being laughed at.

“Take a candy bag,” said Mom sitting in the car at the end of the block. When I turned back, Zoe was already 15 steps ahead. “Zoe, wait!” Zoe stopped and turned around. “Hurry, hurry,” she said. I ran to catch up.Looking after her would be more work than I'd expected.

Paragraph 1:

“Trick or treat!” she said at the next house.

Paragraph 2:

On our way to the car, we ran into my friend Jeff on the sidewalk.

Possible answer:

“Trick or treat!” she said at the next house. The door opened. A woman stepped out. “Aren't you so cute?” Zoe held up her candy bag. “Are you alone?” the woman asked, looking around worriedly. “No,” Zoe pointed a finger at my hiding place in the bushes. “ Oh, no,” I thought. She's going to announce me to the world. “Can he have a candy, too, please?” Zoe asked instead. The woman laughed and gave her some more candies, which was out of my expectation. People's faces lit up as soon as they saw Zoe.

On our way to the car, we ran into my friend Jeff on the sidewalk. “This is how you spent Halloween?” he said. But he didn't laugh at me. On the contrary, he said I was lucky to have a lovely sister. “You became a Halloween hero because of looking after your sister.” “Yes!” I said I was Zoe's superhero now. As we rode back home, Mom smiled at me. “And did you have fun?” “Actually, I did,” I said. Halloween with Zoe had turned out to be pretty magical.

“Got your cell phone? Glasses? Wallet? ID?” I asked.

“Yes,” my husband Avraham smiled. “Can we go now? You've got to meet with your interviewer before I go to see my patient at one o'clock.”

“Right. Got your medical bag?”

“Yes.”

Even years after moving from North America, we still loved the half-hour drive to Jerusalem(耶路撒冷). The blue sky above the mountains, the trees, and the journey up to the Holy City always filled us with gratitude for living in Israel.

As we sped along, we came to our favorite part of the journey, where a wonderful view of Jerusalem suddenly appeared above the roadway. We had a good time and arrived at my meeting with time to spare.

After my interview, I met Avraham at our favorite cafe. Avraham ordered his daily iced coffee and a bag of fresh bread. Glancing at the clock, I suggested we go to see his patient.

Avraham had to visit an elderly woman in Jerusalem because her daughter had called the day before to arrange the appointment. As there were very few foot specialists in Israel, Avraham would travel all over the country to see patients requiring specialized foot care. He searched his pockets for a note on which he had written the address.

But the note was nowhere to be found.

“I don't believe it!I must have left the address at home.”

“Do you remember any part of the address?”I asked.

“I remember that there was a number 17 in it, because it was part of my birth date.”

Do you know the street name?”

“No. Just that it's in this neighborhood.”

I had heard the family name mentioned the day before and remembered it sounded like a European name. “Let's try looking at buildings and see if the mailboxes can give us some help,” I offered.

Paragraph 1:

We scanned the listings for the number 17 and two more nearby buildings.

Paragraph 2:

We quickly went upstairs and knocked on a door.

Possible answer:

We scanned the listings for the number 17 and two more nearby buildings. “Well, since we are already in the city, let's try one last building,” Avraham suggested, as he whispered a prayer for God's help in finding the right house with the uncertain address. We tiredly approached the entrance to an apartment house down another street and noticed all of the European names. Taking this as a good sign, we entered the entrance where we learned an elderly couple lived next door.

We quickly went upstairs and knocked on a door. An old man answered the door. Avraham carried themedical bag and explained, “I came here to  see my patient.” The delighted man warmly welcomed us, telling us his wife suffered from a variety of illnesses. Avraham soon conducted a thorough examination and suggested appropriate following-up care. They thanked us  with gratitude. Before we left, their daughter came, asking, “How did you know to come to see my mum? I didn't call!”

Once upon a time, there was a beautiful town and a couple of lovers would often stay on the top of the mountain, enjoying the sunrise and by the sea appreciating the sunset. Everyone who knew them couldn't help envying them for their happy love.

One day the man was seriously injured and lying in hospital for many days without any consciousness. The woman guarded him by the bed in daytime calling his name nonstop and at night, she would go to the church and pray to God until her tears ran out. A month passed by and the man was still sleeping. Finally, God was so moved by her persistence that he would like to do her a special favor.

God said, “I can help your lover recover on condition that you promise to be a butterfly for three years. Do you agree with that deal?” She said excitedly and firmly, “Yes, I do!Never will I regret doing that.”

The next day, the woman was transformed into a butterfly, flying hurriedly to the hospital. It turned out that the man came to his consciousness and woke up, talking with a doctor. She could not hear what they were talking about because she couldn't fly into the room. What she could do was to watch her beloved through the windowshelplessly.

Another spring came and the butterfly was in a hurry to fly back to see the man, only to find that there was a pretty lady standing by him. At that moment she was so shocked that she almost fell down from the sky. She could hardly believe her eyes. It was said that the man was seriously ill during Christmas and that that pretty female doctor took care of him and that finally they fell in sweet love. The butterfly felt heartbroken. In the following days, she often saw the man take the woman to the top mountain to enjoy the sunrise and to the seaside to appreciate the sunset. All these should have belonged to her. But now they belonged to another woman.

Paragraph 1:

The butterfly could do nothing but rest on the man's shoulder off and on.

Possible answer:

The butterfly could do nothing but rest on the man's shoulder off and on. Time flew and finally the day came when the deal between God and the butterfly was coming to an end. Coincidentally, the man was holding a magnificent wedding with his beloved. The church was crowded with their guests. The butterfly flew into it quietly and rested on the shoulder of the minister, listening to the man's oath to the bride and witnessing him put a ring on her finger with a sweet smile. The butterfly couldn't help shedding her tearssadly.

God also felt sad and sighed to the butterfly, “Do you regret for what you have done?” Wiping away her tears on the face, the butterfly replied, “Absolutely not. It's far better to know he can live happily at some corner of the world, even if his bride is not me.” God was a bit relieved and uttered, “What do you intend to do after becoming human again?” “For the last time, I'd like to enjoy the sunrise on the top of the mountain.” she replied, “There I'll let go of my memories about him and start my brand-new life journey on my own.”

“Ouch!” I howled in pain as I dropped the hammer onto my foot. I felt foolish.

It was pouring with rain, and, lame for a moment, I hopped around to the driver's side.

“No luck?” said George. We had a flat tyre(轮胎)and I was trying to change the wheel. But it was stuck firm.

We had driven ten hours along the road through the jungle without seeing another soul. In the distance was an ox working in the field.

“So what do we do now? How can we find a garage?” asked George, as I got back into the car.

About fifteen minutes later, the rain stopped. Out of the jungle came an old woman. She walked towards us carrying something long and thin.

“Uh, oh, here comes danger!” said George, “She's got a spear.”

She was wearing traditional garments, with short sleeves, a colorful necklace and other jewelry. As she got closer, we saw the spear was just a wooden pole. I got out.

“Hello!” I said, in English. “Can you help us?” I pointed to the wheel.

She stared at it, and then gestured for us to follow her back to the jungle. George and I looked at each other, and then set off after her.

Soon we came to a tent under some trees. It had a firm framework of wooden poles, like the one the woman was carrying, covered with heavy cloth, and fastened with rope made of some kind of loose plant fiber. All round were corn plants. It was harvest time for the grain, and a spade, a fork and other tools were lying on the ground. Nearby were some chicks and a rooster, and a pig tied to a post.

The womanfolded back a cloth and invited us in. My eyes had to adjust to the darkness inside. The tent was furnished with a few mats on the floor, and a low table with a teapot. She picked up a photo and showed it to us. Was it her husband? The man in the photo was bare to the waist. He looked much too young. She was probably a widow(寡妇). Maybe her son or her nephew?

Our hostess poured some tea, and watched smiling as we drank.

“Say something,” said George.

Paragraph 1:

I was wondering what to say when I heard the sound of footsteps out of the tent.

Paragraph 2:

Together we walked back to the car.

One possible version:

I was wondering what to say when I heard the sound of footsteps out of the tent. We both looked up. It was exactly the man in the photo but he looked much stronger. The woman said something to him, looking at ussmiling. “Need some help?” he asked. It was amazing that he was speaking very good English! George and Ilooked at each other and our eyes lit up. “Yes, and we are wondering if you could have one of our tyres changed.” “Follow me!” he said, sounding like sort of an order.

Together we walked back to the car. The man grabbed the wheel with one hand and a spanner with the other. With a shout, the tyre was lossened up. “You just need a bit of effort. Hah!” George andI stood there dumbfounded watching him finishing the whole job, gratitude and admiration rushing in my heart. The knot that had been tied up by the pain in my foot, the cold soaking rain and the stubborn flat tyre was loosened too, in the warm tea from the woman, the heroic shout of the man, the mountain view in the distance and the joy of being able to set off again.

一、读后续写(25分)

It was time to go home.“Remember to work on your class speeches for homework,”Miss Walker called, as everyone started talking and packing their school bags. Jenny felt sick. She hated having to read aloud in class. She was sure everyone got really bored listening to her. Once, when Jenny was reading out her holiday diary, Lee was even looking at his watch, a silver and blue one which seemed just magical.

Jenny watched Lee walk ahead of her as they left school. He seemed so clever, and he had a certain sort of shining confidence. He was just one of those people who were good at everything. Jenny sighed. As she turned the corner, she saw Lee's watch lying right in the middle of the path.

Jenny knew she should just pick it up and return it to him, but she didn't want to run after him. Jenny bent down quickly, picked up the watch and ran home. On arriving home, Jenny put it on almost without thinking. She was surprised it fitted so well. She walked to the mirror and started practicing her speech. Words just flooded outof her.“I'm going to talk about swimming. I have been lucky. I've won lots of competitions. But when I'm in a race, I'm not really thinking about winning. I'm just loving the feeling of being in the water...”Jenny laughed with excitement. She walked across the room. She suddenly seemed to have a certain sort of confidence. Turning back to the mirror, Jenny saw a flash of light from the watch in the glass. The flashes of silver seemed almost magical. So maybe Lee's watch really DID have something magic.

The next day, as the lesson began, Miss Walker asked who was going to be brave and go first. No-body moved. Jenny slowly raised her arm. Before Miss Walker could say anything, there was a shout from behind. “She's stolen my watch!” Lee said angrily,“ It went missing at school yesterday.

Possible answer:

Everybody was fixing their eyes on Jennywaiting for an explanationJenny didn't answer. How could she explain about the watch and its magic? No one could understand. No one could believe it. “But I saw you wearing it yesterday,” Miss Walker gently reminded him. For a moment Lee remained silent and then he apologized. Jenny was relieved saying she had found it on the way home and decided to return it after the speech. Everybody was puzzled and asked why. Jenny again was
speechless.

At that momentMiss Walker smiled and asked the class to listen to Jenny's speech first. Jenny walked slowly to the front. She couldn't think properly. All round her, a sea of faces was watching. She felt so frightened and the watch didn't seem magical at all. Suddenly she saw Miss Walker's encouraging eyes. Jenny took a deep breath. “I'm going to talk about swimming...” Ten minutes later the whole class stood up applauding Jenny's wonderful speech. Jenny smiled as she eventually realized the real source of confidence.

The event that stands out in Tom's memory happened one morning when Tom was only ten years old. He was at home with his elder sister Jane. Tom was doing his homework when he heard raised voices. At first he thought nothing of it since customers in the motorcycle shop directly below their flat often became loud, but he soon realized this time it was different.

Quick! Quick! Remove the motorcycles from the shop.” someone yelled.

Then a thick burning smell filled the air. When Tom opened the front door of their flat to investigate, a thick cloud of smoke greeted him. The motorcycle shop had caught fire and people were running and crying.

Jane, who had been playing the violin in her room, hurried to the living room. They rushed out of the door and along the corridor(走廊)through the smoke.

They were heading towards the stairway at the far end of the corridor when Jane suddenly stopped. She turned around and headed back the way they came. Tom had no idea what she was doing, but he followed her.

Jane had suddenly remembered the lady in her 70s who lived next door to them, who they called Makcik. Jane began banging on Makcik's door, but got no answer. As the smoke thickened around them, Tom could see many of their neighbors—some still in their pajamas—running for safety. The thought of fear crossed his mind.

“She would have run for safety like everyone else!” Tom cried. However, Jane refused to give up. “I know Makcik's still inside.” She said she was familiar with Makcik's daily routine and was certain she would still be sleeping. She pounded against the door. “Go downstairs. Go now! Go!”

Luckilysome neighbors passing by stopped and offered help.

One possible version:

Paragraph 1:

Tom noticed the flame was reaching up. Frozen with fear, he stood rooted to the spot. He compre-hended the gravity of the situation and held Jane's hand tightly. Both of them were coughing and their eyes were stinging. Time seemed to stand still, though they were probably there for only two or three minutes. Tom begged Jane to run for safety as quickly as possible. Jane tried to shield her nose from the choking smoke and shook her head. She kept pounding against the door. Tom burst out crying.

Paragraph 2:

Luckily, some neighbors passing by stopped and offered help. A sense of strength immediately replaced the mounting fear and anxiety in Jane's mind. She told them Ms. Makcik must be still in the room. They forced the door open with all their might. Sure enough, Makcik was lying in bed, unconscious. She was carried downstairsand then rushed to the hospital, where she finally came to herself. People in the neighborhood felt relieved and Jane and Tom were very happy.

I was responding to a call from a small brick flat in a quiet part of town. I assumed I was being sent to pick up some party-goersor someone who had just had a fight with a loveror a worker heading to an early shift at some factory for the industrial part of town.

When I arrived at 230 a.m. the building was dark except for a single light in a ground floor window. Under such circumstances many drivers just honk(按喇叭) once or twicewait a minutethen drive away. But I had seen too many weak people who depended on taxis as their only means of transportation.

Unless a situation smelled of dangerI always went to the door.

This passenger might be someone who needs my assistanceI reasoned to myself. So I walked to the door and knocked. “Just a minute” answered a frailelderly voice. I could hear something being dragged across the floor. After a long pausethe door opened. A small woman in her 80s stood before me. She was wearing a print dress and a pillbox hat like somebody out of a 1940s movie. By her side was a small nylon suitcase.

The apartment looked as if no one had lived in it for years. All the furniture was covered with sheets. There were no clocks on the walls no equipment on the counters. In the corner was a cardboard box filled with photos and glassware.

“Would you carry my bag out to the car” she said. I took the suitcase to the cabthen returned to assist the woman. She took my armand we walked slowly toward the cab.

She kept thanking me for my kindness. “It's nothing,” I told her. “I just try to treat my passengers the way I would want my mother treated.”

I opened the trunk and took the suitcase to the door and the woman was already seated in a wheelchair. When she asked how much she owed me, without thinking, I said nothing and bent to give her a bug . It was my assistance that helped one of weak people realize her wish.

A farmer grew some vegetables in his garden. One day his wife was ill and he had no money. He had to sell some cabbages and carrots in the market. The next morning he took two baskets of vegetables to town. But it was raining hard that afternoon and there were few people in the street. When his vegetables were sold out, it was dark. He bought some medicine and hurried to his village.
On his way home he saw a person lying on the snow. He placed his baskets on the ground and was going to help the person to get up. At that time he found it was a dead man and there was much blood on his body. He was so afraid that he ran away quickly, without taking the baskets with him.
