The Dead Sea is becoming smaller and smaller because of the human decision to use part of its water.

The Dead Sea is at the lowest point of the Earth, almost 400 metres below sea level. It is 50 kilometres long. Just 40 years ago, it was 80 kilometres long. .

One of the main reasons for the sea's shrinking (缩小) is lack of water. 90% of the water that flows from the Jordan River, which traditionally goes into the Dead Sea, is taken for drinking and watering crops in Israel and Jordan.

Besides, local companies add to the Dead Sea's problems. They use the water for getting necessary minerals (矿物). It's a real disaster for the Dead Sea.

Now, hundreds of thousands of tourists come to the Dead Sea every year. Its water is so salty that a man can read a newspaper comfortably while lying on his back on the water, The thick black mud (泥巴) that is found at the sea's beach is very useful for people with some diseases. You may watch a program about how the elephants in Africa destroy their habitat(居住地). Humans are much smaller than the strong elephants, but we also destroy the environment and damage the Earth in more ways than other creatures. What are some of the man-made problems that the Earth faces today?

The TV has shown the problem of global warming (全球变暖) many times. At one time during the Ice Age, the Earth was much colder than it is now and natural forces caused the planet to warm up to the temperatures we experience now. That is the normal climate change. Global warming is an increase in the temperature of the Earth's atmosphere. It is caused by the increase in greenhouse gases.

With higher temperatures the polar ice caps are starting to melt and add some other water to the oceans. This raises the sea level and will eventually flood low areas.

And humans are destroying the natural habitat of all the other creatures on Earth. For example, people in South America are destroying the rainforest. Hundreds of animals and plants are on the endangered list, and they could disappear from the Earth forever.

We waste our water and only think that the tap (水龙头) will never run out. The poor Earth is destroyed by careless human activities. The awful picture of the poor Earth can change if enough people work to save and improve the environment.

Protecting our Earth

Good morning, teachers and schoolmates. Have you felt some changes around the Earth? The air isn’t fresh and the Earth is becoming dirtier and dirtier. We can’t make the Earth better in a day, but we can do something for it every day.21·cn·jy·com

Firstly, we can give our old or small clothes away. Some poor people really need them. Secondly, we can save electricity. For example, turn off the light when you leave a room. Thirdly, walk or use your bike if the journey is a short one. Driving is one of the biggest causes of pollution. Don’t drive unless you have to. Fourthly, plant more trees to clean the air.

If we all try our best to do something for the Earth, I’m sure the Earth will become better and better. Let’s do it right now.
