It was a rainy day. I had no desire to drive up the winding mountain road to my daughter Carolyn's house. But she had insisted that I come to see something at the top of the mountain,

So here I was, although unwilling to make the two-hour journey through fog and rain. After lunch, my daughter requested me to drive her to Barage. Aftter a ten-minute drive,we parked the car and got out.We walked along a path that was thick with old pine needles. Huge black green evergreens towered over us. Gradually the peace and silence of the place began to fill my mind. Then we turned a corner and stopped——and I gasped in amazement.

From the top of the mountain to the slopes and valleys, were rivers of daffodils(水仙) in full bloom.A sea of amazing colors, like a carpet before us. It looked as though the sun had tipped over and spilled gold down the mountainside. At the center hung a waterfall of purple hyacinths. Here and there were breathtaking tulips.

A riot of questions filled my mind. Who created such beauty? Why? How?

As we approached the home. We saw a sign that read“Answers to the Questions I Know You Are Asking”. The first answer was:“One Woman——Two Hands,Two Feet, and Very Little Brain.” The second was:“One at a Time.” The third:“Started in 1958”.

I was so moved by what we had seen。“She changed the world,” I said, not getting over the shock,“one bulb(球茎) at the time. She started almost 40 years ago, probably just the beginning of an idea, but she kept at it. ”

“Imagine.” I added,“if I had a vision and worked at it,just a little hit every day, what might I have accomplished?”

Britain has long been known for its love of tea, but people in London also drink a lot of coffee. In fact, it is reported that the average Londoner drinks 2.3 cups of coffee every day. And now, waste coffee grounds (渣滓) will be used to help fuel part of the city’s transportation system.

A technology company announced on Monday that some buses will be using a biofuel that contains coffee oil. The company, called Bio-bean and its partner, Argent Energy, say they have made enough coffee oil to power one of London’s famous double-decker buses (双层巴士) for a year. The announcement made Bio-bean a trending story on social media.

The government agency Transport for London has been turning to biofuels to cut production of carbon emissions. A carbon emission is a gas produced by the burning of carbon. The gas is released into the atmosphere. London’s mayor, Sadiq Khan, said last month his city has a “health crisis caused directly by poor-quality air.” The government has taken steps to discourage people from driving cars that do not meet European Union emissions requirements.

Bio-bean said Londoners produce over 200,000 tons of coffee ground waste a year. The company said it collects waste grounds from chain coffee shops and factories. The grounds are dried and processed to remove the coffee oil.

“It’s a great example of what can be done when we start to re-imagine waste as an untapped (未利用的) resource,” said Bio-bean founder’s Arthur Kay. The coffee fuel technology has received support from the oil company Royal Dutch Shell.

B. Cooperating with its partner, Argent Energy

C. Powering a double-decker bus using coffee oil

D. Making coffee oil out of coffee waste coffee grounds

30. What is Sadiq Khan’s attitude towards the cars using conventional fuels?

A. Neutral B. Concerned C. Casual D. Appreciative

31. What can we infer from the last two paragraphs?

A. The coffee fuel technology has earned wide-spread acceptance.

B. The Bio-bean is the first company to turn some wastes into bio-fuels.

C. The supply of coffee grounds waste in London is guaranteed in a way.

D. People have not attached importance to some so-called wastes widely.

Stockholm, Oct. 2 (Xinhuanet.com) — The 2020 Nobel Prize in Physics has heen awarded to three scientists working the field of laser(激光) physics, the Royal Swedish Academy of Sciences announced here on Tuesday.

Half of the award “for groundbreaking inventions in the field of laser physics” went to American Arthur Ashkin and the other half was awarded jointly to Frenchman Gerard Albert Mourou and Canadian Donna Strickland.

Strickland said in a telephone interview with the academy at a press conference that she was happy and surprised to be receiving the prize. Commenting on her achievements, she emphasized how she ''tries to think outside of the box”.

The inventions being honored this year have revolutionized laser physics. Extremely small objects and incredibly rapid processes are now being seen in a new light. Advanced precision instruments are opening up unexplored areas of research and a very large number of industrial and medical applications, according to a statement released by the Royal Swedish Academy of Sciences.

Ashkin invented optical tweezers(光学子)that grab particles, atoms, viruses and other living cells with their laser beam fingers. This new tool allowed Ashkin to realize an old dream of science fiction—using the radiation pressure of light lo move physical objects. He succeeded in getting laser light to push small particles towards the center of the beam and to hold them there, according to the statement.

Mourou and Strickland paved the way for the shortest and most intense laser pulses ever created by mankind. They succeeded in creating ultrashort, high-intensity laser pulses without destroying the amplifying material. Their revolutionary article was published in 1985 and was the foundation of Strickland’s doctoral thesis.

Strickland and Mouro’s invented technique, called CPA soon became standard for subsequent high-intensity lasers. Its uses include the millions of corrective eye surgeries that are conducted every year using the sharpest of laser beams. The statement said there are still innumerable areas of application that have not yet been completely explored.

“I think it’s really nice that Donna Strickland, as a female scientist, got the prize this year. And it's also a good signal to young people, that you can do something very important very early in your career,” Eva Lindroth emphasized, who is a member of the Class for Physics at the Royal Swedish Academy of Sciences.

“I hope more female scientists can win Nobel science prizes in future. There are more and more women scientists, so I think it ( male dominance) will change, and more female scientists are leading research groups and playing a bigger role,” Lindroth added.

32.What does Strickland mean by saying "tries to think outside of the box'?

A. She has never expected to receive the Nobel Prize.

B. She has taken great pains to get the achievement.

C. She always thinks of creative ways of doing research.

D. Her achievement is mainly due to her partner Mourou.

33.What can we know about the inventions of laser physics?

A. It aims to realize an old dream of science fiction.

B. Mourou and Strickland’s invention grew out of Strickland’s doctoral thesis.

C. It will take a long time to put them into use.

D. It will make great contributions to eye operations.

34.What can we infer from the passage?

A.The three scientists awarded are joint inventors of laser physics.

B.Strickland’s success means far beyond the invented technique itself.

C.Male dominance will change the leading position of female scientists.

D.Strickland is the first female scientist to win the Nobel Prize.

35.What is the main idea of the passage?

A.Three scientists share 2020 Nobel Prize in Physics.

B. Female scientists will win more Nobel Prizes.

C. Laser physics is being used in innumerable areas.

D. The winners are good examples to the young people.

第二节 书面表达(满分25分)

One possible version:

Dear Peter,

I’m so joyful to hear that your school is to hold a “Culture Week” to enrich students’ after-school activities. I’d like to recommend adding some traditional Chinese culture elements, as China has created a long and everlasting history, which will promote cultural diversity.

As far as I’m concerned, brilliant artworks from famous artists can be shown and students will have a chance to appreciate them. Some artists can be invited to give lectures too, which will certainly highlight the charm of the “Culture Week”. Moreover, various kinds of shows will lift the students' spirits, such as lion dance, Face-Changing and so on.

I really hope your “Culture Week” will be a great success.

Yours,

Li Hua
