Mary is reading a story about people who lived a long time ago. Read the story.

Once upon a time an old man lived in a small village. One day his eldest son broke his leg in the fields. A short time later the old man’s second son cut his arm when he was chopping wood in the forest. The villagers said to the old man, ‘Your sons cannot work in the fields. You are very unlucky.’ ‘Maybe,’ said the old man.

The next week some soldiers came to the village. ‘Are there any young men in the village?’ they asked. ‘Most of them are in the fields,’ the old man told them. The soldiers went to the fields. ‘All the young men must come with us,’ they said. ‘The emperor wants them to fight.’ The soldiers took all the young men away except the old man’s two sons because they could not fight.

The villagers came to the old man. ‘You are very lucky. The soldiers did not take your sons,’ they said. ‘Maybe,’ said the old man.
