We may look at the world around us, but somehow we manage not to see it until whatever we’ve become used to suddenly disappears. Takefor example, the neatly- dressed woman I 16 to see —— or look at ——on my way to work each morning.

For three years, no matter 17 the weather was like, she was always waiting at the bus stop around 8:00 am. On 18 days, she wore heavy clothes and a pair of woolen gloves. Summertime brought out neat, belted cotton dresses and a hat pulled low over her sunglasses. 19 , she was an ordinary working woman. Of course, I 20 all this only after she was seen no more. It was then that I realized how 21 I expected to see her each morning. You might say I 22 her. “Did she have an accident? Something 23 ?” I thought to myself about her misfortune. Now that she was gone, I felt I had known her. I began to realize that part of our 24 life probably includes such chance meetings with familiar 25 : the milkman you see at dawn, the woman who 26 walks her dog along the street every morning, the twin brothers you see at the library. Such people are 27 markers in our eyes. They add weight to our 28 of place and belonging.

Think about it. If, while walking to work, we mark where we are by 29 a certain building, why should we not mark where we are when we pass a familiar, though 30 , person?

三.阅读理解(共两节,满分30分)

My two-year-old daughter, Claudia, usually behaves well by child standards—except in the mornings when she demands to take off all her clothes and wear nothing but a dinosaur sheet.

Before the annual Passover Seder(逾越节家宴), we had advised her to put on a dress-dress and sent her to the White House to have her picture taken with the president. Claudia, however, didn't want to be in the White House, whatever that was.

“I take off my dress,” she suggested.

“Claudia, if you could just wait one second —”

“I wear a sheet-dress.”

“I’m so sorry, sweet girl, but we didn’t bring any sheets tonight!”

When the president came in, the quietness fell over the Red Room. But Claudia didn't care. Claudia wanted a sheet-dress now. In her fury, she threw herself at the feet of the most famous man in the world. Pete Souza, the White House photographer, walked into the room and took the photo.

Two months later, when the White House photo office e-mailed me a photograph of the incident, I didn’t realize that it would interest anyone beyond my circle of family and friends when I posted it on my Facebook page. Over the weekend, it was featured in the Daily Mail, CNN, the Washington Post, and many more. Good Morning America had several articles about her after I turned them down for an interview. Everywhere, everyone had a lot to say about Claudia.

Most people were amused, but I was shocked by what other commenters read into the picture. They saw my income, my political beliefs and the pride I took in my inability to raise a child.

For Claudia herself, the most important outcome may have been that she announced that she was done with diapers(尿布).

34. In the mornings Claudia usually ____________.

A. upsets her mother in dressing B. behaves rudely to her mother

C. demands to put on her dress-dress D. dresses up as a dinosaur

35. What is the meaning of the underlined word “fury”?

A. Anger. B. Shock. C. Excitement. D. Disappointment.

36.When facing the president, Claudia appeared ____________.

A. embarrassed B. nervous C. foolish D. unafraid

37. Which of the following is TRUE according to the passage?

A. Many reporters interviewed the writer about her daughter.

B. The writer felt annoyed at the bad comments on the picture.

C. The incident resulted from the writer’s inability to raise her child.

D. The writer regretted not showing the photo on her Facebook page.

For those who make journeys across the world, the speed of travel today has turned the countries into a series of villages. Distances between them appear no greater to a modern traveler than those which once faced men as they walked from village to village. Jet plane fly people from one end of the earth to the other, allowing them a freedom of movement undreamt of a hundred years ago.

Yet some people wonder if the revolution in travel has gone too far. A price has been paid, they say, for the conquest (征服) of time and distance. Travel is something to be enjoyed, not endured (忍受). The boat offers leisure and time enough to appreciate the ever-changing sights and sounds of a journey. A journey by train also has a special charm about it. Lakes and forests and wild, open plains sweeping past your carriage window create a grand view in which time and distance mean nothing. On board a plane, however, there is just the blank blue of the sky filling the narrow window of the airplane. The soft lighting, in-flight films and gentle music make up the only world you know, and the hours progress slowly.

Then there is the time spent being “processed” at a modern airport. People are conveyed like robots along walkways; baggage is weighedtickets produced, examined and produced yet again before the passenger move again to another waiting area. Journeys by rail and sea take longer, yes, but the hours devoted to being “processed” at departure and arrival in airports are luckily absent. No wonder, then, that the modern high-speed trains are winning back passengers from the airlines.

Man, however, is now a world traveler and cannot turn his back on the airplane. The working lives of too many people depend upon it; whole new industries have been built around its design and operation. The holiday maker, too, with limited time to spend, patiently endures the busy airports and limited space of the flight to gain those extra hours and even days, relaxing in the sun. Speed controls people’s lives; time saved, in work or play, is the important thing—or so we are told. Perhaps those first horsemen, riding free across the wild, open plains, were enjoying a better world than the one we know today. They could travel at will, and the clock was not their master.

38. What does the writer try to express in Paragraph 1?

A. Travel by plane has speeded up the growth of villages.

B. The speed of modern travel has made distances relatively short.

C. The freedom of movement has helped people realize their dreams.

D. Man has been fond of travelling rather than staying in one place.

39. According to Paragraph 3, passengers are turning back to modern high-speed trains because _________.

A. they pay less for the tickets

B. they feel safer during the travel

C. they can enjoy higher speed of travel

D. they don’t have to waste time being “processed”

40. What does the last sentence of the passage mean?

A. They could enjoy free and relaxing travel.

B. They needed the clock to tell the time.

C. They preferred travelling on horseback.

D. They could travel with their master.

第二节(5小题,每小题2分,满分10

根据短文内容,从短文后的选项中选出能填入空白处的最佳选项。选项中有两项为多余选项。

Having a roommate can be one of the best experiences in college or one of the worst. 41 Follow these tips to avoid the common mistakes that turn good roommate relationships sour.

Talk things out.

Communication is key. If something happens, sit down with your roommate and have a face-to-face conversation. I’ve seen roommate relationships fall apart because something happens and, instead of talking to each other, the two start complaining about their roommates behind their backs. 42

Don’t expect to be best friends.

Some roommates become the best of friends, and some don’t. Don’t put pressure (压力) on yourself or your roommate, especially when you first meet. 43 And if your roommate doesn’t end up being your best friend, don’t worry.

Ask before you take.

This applies to food, clothes and anything else. If you want to keep a relationship going, show your roommate that you have respect for what is his or hers by asking first. 44

Clean up after yourself.

This should do without saying. Don’t be lazy. Or, at least, don’t bury your roommate in your clothes and garbage. Most people I’ve come across in college are messy. 45 But being considerate with where you put your things will help you avoid conflict.
