Several weeks ago,KidsPost did a story on “The Art of Video Games” at the Smithsonian American Art Museum. The exhibition has created debate with some people saying that as fun as video games are ,they are not works of art.Other people say that video games may be a new form of art and that they belong to in museums. We asked readers for their opinions on the topic. Here are a few of the letters we received.
A video game is like a painting on a screen. In order to make a video game, you have to think of something original(新颖的)to reach the players. This is the point of Art.
——Mary Pottanat,13
I believe video games are not a form of art.Art should be a visual (视觉的)and creative expression of feelings.Although it is arguable that video games are visual, they do not express feelings in any way.
——Prannab Kirshnan,12
However exciting video games are, they are not art.Painting is art,but not video games.Art has beauty and culture that no technology could ever compare to.Even though you can create art in some video games, the “ Mona Lisa” wasn't painted with Nintendo.
——Caroline Kaplan,10
Art is a way of communicating ideas to the public in a way that is fun to them. The “public”,who in this case are kids and adults, are finding these video games from different time periods interesting.Video games would not have been art if it had not been for the kids and adults attracted by “the art of video games”.

If a noisy neighbor is blasting music at all hours of the day and night, drowning out your phone conversations and interrupting your sleep, you can call the police. But what is a whale to do?
Natural noise from waves, wind, rain and even earthquakes is common in oceans. Unfortunately, manmade noise from oil and gas drilling, sonar, and ships is also present.
Low frequency noise has doubled off the California coast every decade since the nineteen sixties. The main reasons are ships' propellers (螺旋桨). They not only generate continuous low frequency sound, some propellers cavitate(形成气穴), which means they create air bubbles that collapse, creating loud popping sounds.
Whales use low frequency calls to communicate across thousands of miles of ocean. They are threatened by noise pollution because it can prevent them from contacting each other and from locating their foods. Endangered humpback and right whales, which use fibrous baleen to strain food from the water, are the most at risk.
Scientists studying right whales off Canada's east coast have discovered that whales are sending louder calls through the water to make themselves heard. Because they invest more energy in making calls, they have less energy available for finding food and mating. Other scientists measuring whale calls against background noise pollution have discovered that right whales have lost about eighty percent of their normal communication area. This could seriously affect survival of this already threatened species.
Scientists don't have badges and guns, but they are trying to correct the noise pollution problem. By tracking ships and marine mammals and understanding how noise travels, they are creating sound maps. They hope to get shipping lanes moved so that the noise pollution ships create will not overlap with areas most important to the whales.

If anything can be said about recordbreaking globetrotter (环球旅行家) Graham Hughes, it's that— throughout his travels— he's always kept his feet firmly on the ground.
The 33yearold adventurer, from Liverpool, has become the first person to visit all 201 countries in the world without using a plane.
Hughes used buses, taxis, trains and his own two feet to travel 160,000 miles in exactly 1,426 days — all on a shoestring(资金微薄) of just $100 a week.
He spent four days “crossing open ocean in a leaky (漏的) boat” to reach Cape Verde on the North Atlantic, was jailed for a week in the Congo for being mistaken as a “spy”, and was arrested trying to “sneak (溜;偷偷地做) into” Russia.
And yesterday Graham Hughes trudged (长途跋涉) into Juba, the capital of South Sudan, to end the epic fouryear journey that began in his hometown of Liverpool on New Year's Day 2009.
“I love travel, and I guess my reason for doing it was that I wanted to see if this could be done, by one person traveling on a shoestring,” he told the Christian Science Monitor. “I think I also wanted to show that the world is not some big, scary place, but in fact it is full of people who want to help you even if you are a stranger.”
Guinness has now confirmed that Hughes, who filmed the expedition for a documentary and raised money for charity Water Aid, has achieved the world record.
“The main feeling today is just one of intense gratitude to every person around the world who helped me get here, by giving me a lift, letting me stay on their couch, or pointing me in the right direction,” Hughes added.

Dear_headmaster,
Lately_I_have_become_worried_about_the_environment_of_the_school_dinning_hall. Some people seem to treat it as if it were a rubbish area. They throw the leftover food about, on the table or on the ground. This makes the hall look unpleasant for us to come and eat there.
I have several solutions. First, get more people to form good habits by putting posters around the hall asking them to be more thoughtful of their behaviors and protect our environment. Second, make people pick up their own litter. We can do this by asking some students to walk around the hall and watch out for those that drop litter. We can make those who are found dropping litter stay behind and tidy up the hall after all the students have finished their meal.

The best kept secret in San Diego is waiting to offer you a delightful getaway—without leaving town.
Less than three years ago, the Parisi Hotel was just an office building above the shops on the corner of Prospect Street. Now, that valuable space is an intimate luxury hotel with several rooms overlooking the ocean. You'll be amazed when you enter from the corner and ascend the curving staircase to the secondfloor lobby. It will take you into a different world.
What will you find when you enter the large contemporary lobby is a hand some and peaceful space that was designed with a hint of Tuscany in its modern Mediterranean style. The lobby has a large fire place with comfortable sofas in warm neutral colors surrounding it. You'll feel relaxed just sitting there—with its skylight overhead letting in the morning sun. Since people first launched rockets into space in the 1950s, we have been leaving behind all sorts of things. Some of them, like the camera, were lost by astronauts while they did work outside their spacecraft. But much of the space junk is made up of little pieces of things that were once bigger objects, until they struck each other and broke apart.
Some things we send into space fall back toward Earth and burn up in the atmosphere. But larger pieces sometimes survive the extreme heat and hit the ground or the ocean at great speeds. So there is always concern that something may fall from the sky and do some harm.
But space junk falling on roofs is not the biggest worry. Scientists are concerned about the “Kessler” problem. Imagine what happens when an empty rocket strikes another while orbiting the earth. Two big things become many smaller things. They then hit other things. The pieces get smaller and smaller until they form a cloud of junk that blocks the path of future space vehicles.
Marco Castronuovo, an Italian Space Agency researcher, says launching a satellite into space that would get very close to some of the larger pieces of space junk. The satellite would connect a small rocket to the useless object. When the rocket explodes, it pushes the junk into a lower and slower orbit, nearer the Earth. After a time, the junk burns up in the atmosphere. Mr.Castronuovo has proposed using a number of small satellites with robotic arms. One arm would catch the space junk, and another arm would connect the rocket. He imagines that each satellite could jump from one large piece of junk to another. He thinks this method could destroy about ten large objects each year.
Scientists have been concerned about space junk for many years. Right now, the costs of the cleanup have been too great. Mr.Castronuovo says his system could be put in place for a much more reasonable amount of money. So what can be done to clean up the space around our planet?

You have a backache; your legs are painful after a basketball match—what better than a relaxing massage (按摩)?
Scientists now say they have figured out the reason why a massage brings comfort. They say a massage changes how some of your proteins (蛋白质) act. This makes your muscles less inflamed (发炎的), according to the Los Angeles Times.
The leader of the study, Professor Mark Tarnopolsky at McMaster University, Canada, chose several healthy young men for the experiment. He asked them to do very tiring exercise. Then he looked at how the cells changed in their legs. After this, the men were given a massage on only one leg and Tarnopolsky recorded any cell changes again.
Tarnopolsky and his team found that massaging made the inflammation caused by exercise get better because it weakened the activity of a protein called NFkB.
Scientists also noticed that massaging helped cells recover from exercise damage. When muscles were being massaged, the amount of another protein called PGClalpha increased. This kind of protein can stimulate (促进) the growth of a tiny part inside cells called mitochondria (线粒体).
People used to think that massaging eases pain by clearing away the lactic acid (乳酸) which built up after exercise. However, Tarnopolsky and his team didn't see any changes to lactic acid.
Thomas Birk is a professor at Wayne State University, US. He said that the study was the first he had seen to analyze massage in such depth. He said they wanted to start research 10 years ago, but technology was not yet good enough.
One day massages could be used to treat injuries and muscle disease. They may even be able to replace some antiinflammatory medicines, said Birk. But, he said, more research is needed for masseurs (按摩师) to figure out the best massages for different diseases.

A new collection of photos brings an unsuccessful Antarctic voyage back to life.
Frank Hurley's pictures would be outstanding—undoubtedly firstrate photojournalism—if they had been made last week.In fact, they were shot from 1914 through 1916, most of them after a disastrous shipwreck(海难), by a cameraman who had no reasonable expectation of survival. Many of the images were stored in an ice chest, under freezing water, in the damaged wooden ship.
The ship was the Endurance, a small, tight, Norwegianbuilt threemaster that was intended to take Sir Ernest Shackleton and a small crew of seamen and scientists, 27 men in all,to the southernmost shore of Antarctica's Weddell Sea.From that point Shackleton wanted to force a passage by dog sled (雪橇) across the continent. The journey was intended to achieve more than what Captain Robert Falcon Scott had done.Captain Scott had reached the South Pole early in 1912 but had died with his four companions on the march back.
As writer Caroline Alexander makes clear in her forceful and wellresearched story The Endurance, adventuring was even then a thoroughly commercial effort.Scott's last journey, completed as he lay in a tent dying of cold and hunger, caught the world's imagination, and a film made in his honor drew crowds.Shackleton, a onetime British merchantnavy officer who had got to within 100 miles of the South Pole in 1908, started a business before his 1914 voyage to make money from movie and still photography.Frank Hurley, a confident and gifted Australian photographer who knew the Antarctic, was hired to make the images, most of which have never before been published.
13.What do we know about the photos taken by Hurley?
A.They were made last week.
B.They showed undersea sceneries.
C.They were found by a cameraman.
D.They recorded a disastrous adventure.
14.Who reached the South Pole first according to the text?
A.Frank Hurley.
B.Ernest Shackleton.
C.Robert Falcon Scott.
D.Caroline Alexander.
15.What does Alexander think was the purpose of the 1914 voyage?
A.Artistic creation. B.Scientific research.
C.Money making. D.Treasure hunting.

根据下文中的“the curving staircase to the secondfloor lobby”可知,此处表示登上曲折的楼梯到二楼大堂,应选择D项。
根据第三段中的“The lobby has a large...You'll feel relaxed just sitting there—with its skylight overhead letting in the morning sun.”
根据第四段第一句中的“The Parisi Hotel is the perfect place for seniors because it's quiet and restful”可知,该酒店适合老年人是因为它能让人感到安宁。
根据最后一段的第一句“Rates for standard suites begin at $275.”
从第一段的“But much of the space junk is made up of little pieces of things that were once bigger objects”可知,许多的太空垃圾都是由小块粒的东西构成的。
从第三段的“The pieces get smaller and smaller until they form a cloud of junk that blocks the path of future space vehicles.”
由第四段的“it weakened the activity of a protein called NFkB”可知答案。
由第六段的“People used to think that massaging eases pain by clearing away the lactic acid(乳酸)”可知答案。
由题干中的the photos taken by Hurley定位到文章第二段开头。
所以这里选F(如果你不健康,你就可能很容易生病。)
所以这里选B(这对你的健康不利。)
所以这里选A(不要不吃饭。)
所以这里选G(你应该吃对你身体有益的食物。)
所以这里选E(当你吃饭的时候不要看电视或者看电影。)
24.C 本句还原成正常语序应该是:______must feel how wonderful and exciting to live there。可知must feel缺少主语,而分析句意可知,feel wonderful and exciting(exciting只用来修饰事物)的应该是to live there,可见此处真正的主语是to live there,而空格处单词只是形式主语,能作形式主语的只有it。
28.A insist on意为“坚持”;rely on意为“依赖,依靠”;argue about意为“争论,辩论”;wonder about“想知道;对……
31.B 文章首段提到小女孩住在山上(on a hill),所以这里是骑车下山(down the hill),然后穿过山谷,故答案为B。
34.C get to意为“到达”;introduce...to意为“介绍……给……”;lead to 意为“通向”;move to意为“朝……

Fast food is very popular with people in China, especially the young. The reasons for its popularity are as follows.
Firstly, with the quick pace of life, fast food is really convenient and timesaving. People can save a lot of time and trouble with food ready made so that they can devote themselves to taking part in other activities. Secondly, the prices of fast food are reasonable and the service is excellent. However, it is not a kind of healthy food in terms of nutrition, because the nutrition in it is not well balanced.
In my opinion, people can have fast food when they are really in a hurry. If not, they had better have the traditional food.

Whenever anyone measures educational success, East Asian countries are always top scorers. But in a recent league table, a European country, Finland, was top of the class. South Korea was still in second place, though. Britain was at number 6.
In Korea the school day is longtypically 7 or 8 hours, followed by hours of private tutoring in the evenings. All_this_hothousing leaves Korean students so tired, they sometimes fall asleep in class next day. Worries about the effects of late night cramming (填鸭式) led the government to force cramming schools to close by 10 pm.Finnish children spend the least time in class in the developed world, often finishing just after lunch, with about one hour of homework a day. Private tuition is uncommon. The British and American school day is quite long in comparison, around 6 hours, and secondary school pupils do 2 or 3 hours of selfstudy a night.
The Korean education system, like many in Asia, is intensely competitive, with students even competing to get into the best cramming schools, to help them get ahead. Finnish education is far less cutthroat. Classes are all mixed ability, and there are no league tables. British schools again occupy the middle ground, with quite high levels of competition for places at university, and schools and universities battling to come top of league tables for everything from exam results to student satisfaction. Korea and Finland both do well, yet their education systems are so different.
However, there are some similarities in Korea and Finland. In those countries, teachers have high status in society, and education is very highly valued. Those attitudes can't change quickly. But it can be done. They might be the star pupils now, but until the 1970s, Finland's educational system was poor. Their thoroughly different approach to schooling has taken them to the top in just a generation.

The problem with students using Google is not that the search leader is unable to offer useful educational content. It's that finding that content using simple search terms is a difficult art to master. But some educational companies and organizations aim to make it easier to find useful educational content among the Web. They are forming a working group to come up with more detailed criteria(标准)that could eventually be added into the search lines for Google, Bing, and Yahoo !
The project was encouraged by a joint move by those major search engines to help users do more effective Websearches. The idea behind the new education corporation is to determine a common “framework” for narrowing search results for education content—by subject area,or source type,or content type, or any number of possible criteria. The goal is also to persuade publishers of educational content to use a matching set of tags(分类)to help the search engines sort out their content more easily.
Search engines are used by college students, but they were not designed for them. This has been a subject of much handwringing (绝望) among professors, who worry that students are not finding the most reliable content on the Internet even if more and more content providers of good fame—textbook publishers, scholars, universities and many others—have been putting useful academic resources on the open Web.
Michael Johnson, a member who will be serving on a working group devoted to developing the framework over the next six months or so, said “The project is aimed at benefiting the publishers of educational content as much as students. ”
9. What may annoy students using Google to help them?
A.They can't search useful educational content at home.
B.Google doesn't provide valuable educational content.
C.It's hard to find educational content in simple and effective ways.
D.There are so many students searching the same using Google now.
10.To improve Web searches for students the working group will ________.
A.demand the major search engines offer more content
B.train more students to surf safely on the Internet
C.ask students to use more kinds of search engines
D.link better standards to the major search engines
11.What may publishers of educational content help in the joint move?
A.They should produce less educational content with better quality.
B.They can set standard tags to match with searched contents.
C.They may develop better searching software.
D.They will provide more educational content.
12.From the third paragraph we can see ________.
A.not all content providers of good fame offer reliable content
B.textbook publishers shouldn't put resources on the open Web
C.college professors don't believe in content on the
Internet
D.college students don't know how to use search engines

In no other time in history information, good and bad, has been spread as fast as today. Media just pushes out violence and cruelty and of course it will affect the minds of people watching. Internet has damaged the idea that love is something special and school social workers are busy teaching teenage boys how to behave in a relationship and girls to say no to things they do not want to do.
Quite a lot of studies have been made into the way children are affected by watching TV and other media such games with a high content of violence. In a young age children cannot differentiate themselves and their fantasies from the real world. By playing games that mixes reality with fantasy children learn about themselves and the world. In their games they also act out things they might be considering, their wishes and things they have been through. If a child is let to watch a lot of violence, not surprisingly, the child is very likely to play violent games. Acting out what they have been through is a normal way of trying out new concepts and form ideas about how to interact with other people. Also, up to certain age most children adore adults how ever good or bad they are. Children look upon these adults as role models and copy their behavior.
So what happens then if a child watches adults harm and kill each other in a movie or in a game? What adults do is usually OK to do, so what happens on the screen must be OK even if it looks strange and makes the child feel uneasy. Children become insecure and anxious.
13.Why are children easily affected by TV programs and games?
A.Because they easily ignore the directions from their teachers and parents
B.Because they can't tell reality from fantasy and like to act things out.
C.Because TV programs and games are more attractive than their lessons.
D.Because they cannot find their role models from the real world.
14.From the passage we can learn that ________.
A.most people are deeply pessimistic about their future
B.young children get in touch with much content of violence
C.educators fail to teach what is right and what is wrong
D.films on TV are too difficult for children to understand

Recently a survey has been done on chatting online of senior middle school students in my school. They were asked which qualities they prefer the person to have when they are chatting. 15 percent of them like the person's moral quality;16 percent like the person's appearance; 12 percent care for the person's talent while the rest depend on feeling.
This survey shows that them many of the students don't choose the person carefully. What's worse, they may meet bad people or cheaters, so that they can be taken in.
Therefore, we should pick out the person carefully when chatting online. Meanwhile, we should be strict with ourselves and improve our ability of distinguishing people. Only in this way can we avoid being cheated by others.

Why do some parents tend to hold back their disabled children from experiencing life? Even when they are grown, the parents will not allow certain things to happen. It's true that they do have a certain amount of responsibility in protecting their severely disabled adult children, but at what point do they become overly protective?
Parents want to create a safe haven, a place where they know that nothing bad will happen to their beloved children. This seems to be a respectable and notable act in caring for a person with a disability, but it can have a side effect. When protecting their children from suspected hardships, not wanting anything bad to happen to them, they very well may be preventing good things from happening to them.
In life we all make mistakes, it is how we are able to grow and strengthen our character. Parents may feel that in certain instances their children will get hurt or mistreated in some way, so they build walls in their own minds convincing themselves of the need to shelter. However, the disabled, yes even the “severely disabled” deserve to make personal mistakes as well. Even more, they have the right to succeed.
Parents should do everything and anything within their power to see their disabled children lead a somewhat “normal”life. Parents should help their children, not hold them down. This could make them think they are unworthy and that their parents do not believe in them.
Whatever it may be, let them at least try. If they want to attend college, so be it.Parents should find out all they can, and be involved in every detail. If they want to date and someday marry, so be it. Don't shut them out and from bad or critical opinions about them just because you are afraid.Unite as a family and make it work.
5. What side effect will it have when the parents overprotect their disabled children?
A.Their children will never grow up in the future.
B.Their children will find no shelter when they grow up.
C.Their children will become less confident when facing troubles.
D.Their children will less likely meet with good things.
6. What attitude does the author hold towards the parents who overprotect their disabled children?
A.Supportive. B.Objective.
C.Critical. D.Uninterested.
7.Which of the following arguments does the author agree with?
A.Personal mistakes won't help the disabled children succeed.
B.Parents shouldn't hold their disabled children back but help them.
C.Parents shouldn't let their disabled children lead a normal life.
D.Disabled children won't strengthen their character by mistakes.
8.The suggestions in the last paragraph imply that ________.

B.parents should act as their children's best friends
C.parents should encourage their children to get married
D.parents should live in harmony with their disabled

Nowadays women appear to have a positive image of themselves as safer drivers than men.
In a survey done for insurer MetLife,51% of women said they drive more safely. The evidence is on their side: Men are 3.4 times more likely than women to get a ticket for careless driving and 3.1 times as likely to be punished for drunk driving. “Women are on average less aggressive and more law abiding (守法的) drivers, which leads to fewer accidents,” the report says. However, not all male drivers share the same opinion. Of the men surveyed by MetLife, 39% claimed male drivers were safer. The findings did back them up on one point:automotive knowledge. The report showed that more men are familiar with current safety equipment such as electronic stability control, which helps prevent rollover accidents.
Auto safety unavoidably matters to money. Insurance companies focus on what classes of drivers have the lowest dollar amounts of claims, and for now, that mainly includes women. In general, women pay about 9% less for auto insurance than men. A study by the website Insweb also showed that auto insurance rates are lower for women in most states. Among individual states, women get the greatest advantage in Wyoming(where they pay 20% less), South Dakota and Washington,D. C. where their insurance costs are 16% lower.
“More than 11, 900 male drivers died in U. S. traffic accidents in 2009,compared with just under 4,900 women drivers,” according to the study. “Based on miles traveled, men died at a rate of 2.5 deaths per 100 million miles traveled, VS 1.7 deaths for women. ”
9.According to the study, female drivers ________.
A.are more aggressive while driving
B.are more interested in auto knowledge
C.are more likely to stick to driving laws
D.are more familiar with safety equipment
10.Insurance companies focus on female driver clients probably because they ________.
A.cause more accidents on the road
B.pay more money to the insurance companies
C.take the most part of the insurance clients

Recently we held a class meeting to discuss the problem of passersby crossing the street while the traffic light is red. As we can see, some passersby don't obey traffic rules and jaywalk frequently. This blocks traffic seriously affects drivers and causes accidents to happen, endangering the safety of passersby and drivers. In a word, jaywalking produces negative effects and does not help develop good social behavior.
It is really a pity to see all this in our society. To deal with the situation, the government has taken some measures. When caught jaywalking, the passersby are criticized so that they will become aware of the dangers of doing so, or they are fined on the spot. Sometimes the traffic police will report jaywalkers at their workplace and expose them to the public. However, it will take a long time to stop passersby from jaywalking. We should start from ourselves right now.

Wow,ladies! That is all I can say, I write this article with mixed emotions. Having Aiko the female robot around the house to help out could be either a blessing or a nightmare. If you are a working mother like me, then the idea of having a helping hand around would be a good thing. We working mothers dream about going home to find dinner on the table, a clean house and everything ready for the next day, that would be the perfect world.
Yet as always we women worry about being replaced,me included. Aiko has been created with special sensors (感应器) underneath her immediate“skin”cover. I believe her creator, Le Trung, has other motives(动机). Of course, he says it's not true. She doesn't complain, argue or talk back. She can carry on a conversation and help you with your math homework. She can tell you the weather outside and can speak in English and Japanese. She doesn't require any sleep nor does she complain about a headache or being tired. She can serve tea and give back massages. I'm sure some men out there would view her as the perfect woman or even“superwoman”. So with good reason I say having Aiko around could prove to be bad. As a woman and a wife,I worry about being replaced or even being compared to Aiko. How can you compete with someone or something so perfect like that?
Scientists have been trying to invent robots for a long time. There are many movies and books out there about robots. It looks like those crazy scientists are closer than we thought. Ladies, I think we are fighting a losing battle. So instead of trying to fight it,I guess we have no choice but to join them. Now where is my male robot? Hmm...I want him to look exactly like my Ken Barbie doll. Okay?

B.The robot can do more than she does.

4. What could be the author's purpose in writing the text?
A.To introduce a robot.
B.To argue against robotmaking.
C.To show her fights with robots.

And like all good stories this one has a happy ending. On the way back to Vancouver, they stopped in Edmonton to visit Ted's relatives.During the visit, they got married.People tied ten cans and a “Just Married” sign to the back of their bikes.

Here's a new warning from health experts:sitting is deadly. Scientists are increasingly warning that sitting for long periods, even if you exercise regularly, could be bad for your health. And it doesn't matter where the sitting takes place—in the office, at school, in the car or before a computer or TV. Just the overall number of hours it takes counts. Several studies suggest people who spend most of their days sitting are more likely to be fat, have a heart attack or even die.
While health officials have issued (发布) guidelines advising on the least amounts of physical activity, they haven't suggested people try to limit how much time they spend in a seated position.
“After four hours of sitting, the body starts to send harmful signals,” said EkblomBak of the Swedish School of Sport and Health Sciences. She explained that genes controlling the amount of glucose (葡萄糖) and fat in the body start to shut down.
Even for people who exercise, spending long periods of time sitting at a desk is still harmful. Tim Armstrong, a physical activity expert at the World Health Organization, said people who exercise every day but still spend a lot of time sitting might get more benefits if that exercise were spread across the day, rather than in a single hour.
Still in a study that tracked more than 17,000 Canadians for about a dozen years, researchers found people who sat more had a higher death risk, whether they exercised or not.
Experts said more research is needed to figure out just how much sitting is dangerous, and what might be possible to offset those effects.
“People should keep exercising because that has a lot of benefits,” EkblomBak said. “And when they're in the office, they should try to interrupt sitting as often as possible. ”
9.The underlined word “offset” in Paragraph 6 most probably means “________”.
A.turn to B.work out
C.get rid of D.make use of

A.make a person unable to exercise enough in a day

C.increase glucose and fat in the body
D.make a person become lazy
11. In the opinion of EkblomBak, when at work, you'd better have a rest by ________.
A.sending your friends emails
B.taking a walk around your office
C.chatting online or playing computer games
D.listening to music while sitting
12.Which of the following might be the best title for the passage?
A.Side Effects of Sitting Too Much

C.More and More People Sit Too Much
D.Sitting Too Much Could Be Dangerous

You may ride on your bicycle in a rush to get to school every morning. You may fight to get a bit of space on a bus or in the subway. You may also watch taxis crawl their way through traffic jams.
No matter where you are, all big cities around the world have traffic jams these days. But although they all have their problems, many cities also have a type of transport that has become a cultural icon
In London to avoid the traffic above ground, people use the “underground”,also called the “tube”. The city has the oldest and most complicated underground railway system in the world and is the pride of many Londoners. With 12 lines and 275 stations across the city, the tube, is normally the quickest and easiest way of getting around London. In London, you are never far from a tube station.
New York is famous for its yellow cabs. They serve as a quick and easy way of getting across Manhattan, where the subway doesn't take you everywhere. Stopping a cab is easy; just stick out your arm like you do in any city. But,with over 12,000 yellow cabs in the Big Apple, they also cause traffic jams.
Since 1873 when the first cable car started public service, the slow and noisy vehicle has been a symbol of San Francisco. Although once damaged by a serious earthquake and challenged (挑战) by cars, it is never caught in traffic jams and provides better views than the subway.
But there are no such symbols in Los Angeles. If you visit you'd better rent a car. The city's public transportation is terrible. It can take hours to get across town by bus. The subway covers just a small part of the city center. The light rail line only runs between the Long Beach hotel area and the city center. That's why Angelenos love their private cars more than any other people in the world.
13.If you have a chance to London and want to avoid the traffic jams, you'd better ________.
A.ride vehicle B.take a taxi
C.use underground D.rent a car

24.C 下文的“They took the coin to their little apartment”有提示。
pick up“把……捡起来”。
27.D 这枚硬币在祖母眼里是好运的象征,此处是对前文omen的补充说明,所以选sign。moment“时刻”;gift“礼物”;message“消息”;均不符合文意。
28.B 上文提到是一枚肮脏不堪的硬币“a dirty quarter”,清洗一下才能使它闪闪发光“to make it shine”,所以此处“clean”才符合逻辑。
30.D go through“经历”。
31.A 由下文的“got a job at a big machinery company”可以看出,应选A。be laid off“遭到解雇、被解雇”。
32.C 上文“good fortune to come”有暗示。
33.D 上文祖母捡到硬币的时候说这是好到运来的象征“a sign of good fortune to come”,正是祖母的“预言”,所以此处选predicted。
34.B 根据上下文逻辑关系,祖父死后,祖母搬到我们家和我们住在一起“moved in to live with my family”。
36.B 因为“Every day she told me this story.”,所以这个故事我在睡眠中几乎也能讲得出来,practically“事实上,几乎”。
40.C meant the most to my grandmother“对我祖母来说意义重大”。
Ⅳ.41.determined 42.to live 43.worrying 44.hopeless
45.happiness 46.than 47.that 48.actually 49.the 50.are slipping

If an American student stays with us, I'll be a good guide to some local places of interests which are famous in our area. Besides, my parents and I will help her/him to make Chinese meals, such as jiaozi, noodles, and other foods.
We have the confidence to make the American students fell at home and have some sweet memories.
