Should Celebrities’ Privacy Be Protected?

There will always be contradictions between the public right to know and the privacy of celebrities: when we protect the public’s right, should the privacy of celebrities be protected? In the world there is no absolute affirmation and negation, I can’t say celebrities’ privacy shouldn’t be protected or it should be totally protected. In other words, the answer may be different according to different persons, times and places.

Celebrities, also called public figures, can be divided into two types: political public figures – public officers, and social public figures--movie stars, sports stars. When their privacies have nothing to do with public advantages, as members of Chinese citizens, they are supposed to enjoy the rights of privacy. However, when their words and deeds are related to interests of the general public, the situation becomes special. To the former--political public figures, the mass media should supervise strictly, to the latter--social public figures, the mass media shouldn’t disturb their private life to simply satisfy the public’s curiosity.

Political public figures, those who hold important positions in the government, are in charge of national power and have the right to manage public resources. Their behaviors and deeds not only represent themselves but represent our government to some degree. The exposure of the smile in the scene of a major road traffic, and the behavior of wearing several famous brand watches finally lead to the deposal of YangDacai, the former safety supervision bureau director of ShanXi province. Similarly, WangYongping(the former spokesman of the ministry of railways) meet the same fate after the his improper words come to light. Since they gain what most can’t get, they should satisfy some of their privacies. Besides, to exercise a close supervision over the political public figures can make a contribution to the building of a fair society. The Watergate scandal which disturbed the fairness of the election made Nixon come out of power.

The proper sacrifice of Political public figures’ privacies can protect the interests of the public, I think it‘s worth doing.

Not everybody can put up with paparazzi’ crazy tracking behavior and candid camera's behavior. The Princess Diana dead in a car accident when she was attempting to shake off pararazzi’s pursuit. Feng Xiaogang was very angry at the celebrity map, which disturb his family. What’s worse, some reporters even spread rumors to injure others' reputation. There should be laws and regulations to regulate such hateful behaviors.
