San Francisco-When Jeannie Gant left Hong Kong in 1993 to move to the US, she chose San Francisco because she knew she could find her favorite dishes.
"And also because San Franciscans better know the fact that the Asian community(团体) is not one," she added. "Tell them that you are Korean or Chinese, and they will know the difference."
This year San Francisco will become the only city after the Usbesides Honolulu(檀香山)with more Asians than whites.
"For the Chinese population particularly, this is a historic event," says David Lee, executive(执行)director of the Chinese American Voter Education Committee.
Lee says that Chinese make up about 65 percent of San Francisco's Asian population. But he says it is important to remember that Asians were not always welcomed here. "The founding fathers of San Francisco, who were Irish and Italian, did all they could to prevent the Chinese and Asians in general from growing as a community," Lee says, "Now 100 to 150 years later, the Asian community has developed in ways that were un- imagined just 50 years ago" , when almost all of San Francisco's Chinese lived in a five or six block area known as Chinatown. The city now is the heart of Asian America, he says.
"Travel anywhere in Asia, ask which American cities people have heard of, and San Francisco will be at the top of the list." The immigration trend started in 1965. "Though the 70s and 80s there were many Asians coming, that continues today."
"African American families are being taken the place of from low-income neighborhoods in the south of the city by Asian immigrants who have more capital," he says. Asians have begun to have their influence politically by becoming American citizens and registering(登记)to vote.
36. Suppose there are 1 million Chinese in San Francisco, there are______Asians in all.
A. 65 thousand B. 6. 5 million

Social Customs and ways of behaving change.Things which were considered impolite many years ago are now acceptable.Just a few years ago,it was considered impolite behavior for a man to smoke On the street. No man who thought of himself as being a gentleman made a fool of himself by smoking when a lady was in the room.
Until the twentieth century cigarettes were not an important threat to public health.Men used tobacco mainly in the form of cigars, chewing tobacco, and snuff. Most women did not use tobacco at all.
Today cigarette smoking is a widespread habit.About forty-three percent of the adult men and thirty-one percent of the adult women in the United States smoke cigarettes regularly. It is encouraging to note, however, that millions of people have given up smoking habits.Seventy-five percent of the male population and forty-six percent of the female population have smoked cigarettes at some time during their lives, but twenty-six percent of these men and eleven percent of the women have stopped smoking. The number of the persons who have given up smoking is increasing.
Income, education, and occupation all play a part in determining a person's smoking habits. City people smoke more than people living on farms. Well-educated men with high incomes are less likely to smoke cigarettes than men with fewer years of schooling and fewer incomes. On the other hand,if a well-educated man with a higher income smokes at all,he is likely to smoke more packs of cigarettes per day.
The situation is somewhat different for women. There are slightly more smokers among women with higher family incomes and higher education than among the lower income and lower educational groups. These more highly educated women tend to smoke more heavily.
Among teenagers the picture is similar. There are fewer teenager smokers from upper-income, well-educated families, and fewer from families living in farm area.High school students who are preparing for college are less likely to smoke than those who do not plan to continue their education after high school.Children are most likely to start smoking if one or both of their parents smoke.

Anybody running a company knows that a well—planned conference can greatly improve performance of that business. The main reason for this is that it takes your employees away from the daily workplace and offers them somewhere fresh for a short time. However, unless the conference is well thought out it will not have the best results and you will have wasted a great deal of money. Here are some tips for you.
The first step is to find the right place. Can your employees easily reach the conference center? Is it near a railway station? Is it close to a good, fast road? Has it plenty off suitable parking space? If you are going to choose a hotel, then perhaps the hotel has cheaper rates at weekends or,if it is in a popular tourist area, midweek rates may be cheaper.Furthermore, you need to think whether there is a bathroom. After a day’s meeting, maybe your employees would like to have a hot water bath.Or maybe there are other needs to satisfy depending on your employees’ taste.
Another important requirement is food and drink.Breakfast is a time when people can relax before work begins, but you may not want a long break for lunch in the middle of the day.Buffet(自助餐) lunches are very popular for this reason. Then there is dinner, which most employees consider a reward for a day’s hard work!
Whatever your needs are,it is essential(基本的)to think ahead if you want a successful conference.

News has come from America that we shall soon have no more children. The idea that children are different sorts of people from adults, says Mr. Neil Postman has not always been around. In medieval (世纪) times most children did not go to school, but joined in adult life entertainment.
Then printed books were invented; and became common (before that, the only book were copied by hand, and there were very few of them). With printing, all families could have books: this meant that adults could get knowledge children could not, since the children had to read first. So some knowledge became unsuitable for children. They were no longer just small grownups, but had to learn to become grown-ups.
All this, says Mr. Postman is now changing. Printing created childhood, but television is destroying it once again. No one needs to learn to watch television. All knowledge is there for everyone to have. We are going to return to a medieval life-style, and children are once more going to be a part of the adult world.
