第三节:阅读理解 (10小题,每小题2分,满分20)

Culture and Physical Appearance

Perhaps the most famous theory in the study of body movement was suggested by Professor Ray Birdwhistell. He believes that physical appearance is often culturally programmed. In other wordswe learn our looks—we are not born with them. A baby has generally unformed facial features. A babyaccording to Birdwhistelllearns where to set the eyebrows by looking at those around him—family and friends. This helps explain why the people of some areas of the United States look so much alike. New Englanders or Southerners have certain common facial features that cannot be explained by genetics. The exact shape of the mouth is not set at birthit is learned after. In factthe final mouth shape is not formed until well after new teeth set in. For many peoplethis can happen well after they are grown up. A husband and wife together for a long time often come to look somewhat alike. We learn our looks from those around us. This is perhaps why in a single country there are areas where people smile more than those in other areas. In the United Statesfor examplethe South is the part of the country where people smile most frequently. In New England they smile lessand in the western part of New York State still less. Many Southerners find cities such as New York cold and unfriendlypartly because people on Madison Avenue smile less than people on Peachtree Street in AtlantaGeorgia. People in largely populated areas also smile and greet each other in public less often than people do in small towns.

41. Ray Birdwhistell believes that physical appearance ________________.

A. has little to do with culture B. has much to do with culture

42.According to the passagethe final mouth shape is formed ____ ___.

A. before birth B. as soon as one’s teeth are newly set

C. some time after new teeth set in D. around 15 years old

43. Ray Birdwhistell can tell what area of the United States a person is from by _______.

A. how much he or she smiles B. how he or she raises his or her eyebrows

C. what he or she likes best D. the way he or she talks 44. People who live ______ are friendlier.

A. in largely populated areas B. in New York City

C. in the country D. in the North

45. This passage might have taken out of a book dealing with _____ .

A. physics B. chemistry C. biology D. none of the above

There were smiling children all the way. Charily they knew at what time the train passed their homes and they made it their business to stand along the railway, wave to complete strangers and cheer them up as they rushed towards Penang. Often whole families stood outside their homes and waved and smiled as if those on the trains were their favorite relatives. This is the simple village people of Malaysia. I was moved.

I had always traveled to Malaysia by plane or car, so this was the first time I was on a train. I did not particularly relish the long train journey and had brought along a dozen magazines to read and reread. I looked about the train. There was not one familiar face. I sighed and sat down to read my Economics.

It was not long before the train was across the Causeway and in Malaysia. Johore Baru was just another city like Singapore, so I was tired of looking at the crowds of people as they hurried past. As we went beyond the city, I watched the straight rows of rubber trees and miles and miles of green. Then the first village came into sight. Immediately I came alive, I decided to wave hack.

From then on my journey became interesting. I threw my magazines into the waste basket and decided to join in Malaysian life. Then everything came alive. The mountains seemed to speak to me. Even the trees were smiling. I stared at everything as if I was looking at it for the first time.

The day passed fast and I even forgot to have my lunch until I felt hungry. I looked at my watch and was surprised that it was 3:00 pm. Soon the train pulled up at Butterworth. I looked at the people all around me. They all looked beautiful. When my uncle arrived with a smile, I threw my arms around him to give him a warm hug. I had never done this before. He seemed surprised and then his weather-beaten face warmed up with a huge smile. We walked arm in arm to his car.

I looked forward to the return journey.

I’m happy to receive your email asked about how we are doing to promote a low-carbon lifestyle. Now let me tell you something about it.

A campaign with the theme of “Actions Make a Difference” are going on in our school to call for a low-carbon life. For means of transportation, we took buses, ride bicycles or walk if we can. Beside, we choose to use e-cards instead traditional greeting cards. We only print things out when necessarily, and print double-sided. And we try to save water and electricity in our daily life. For an example, we are encouraged to have a shower instead of a bath, that uses far less energy and water. We always remember to switch off all appliances and lights when we’re not using it.

What about you? Looking forward to your reply.
