When 19-year-old Sophia Giorgi said she was thinking of volunteering to help the Make-A-Wish Foundation (基金会), nobody understood what she was talking about. But Sophia knew just how important Make-A-Wish could be because this special organization had helped to make a dream come true for one of her best friends. We were interested in finding out more, so we went along to meet Sophia and listen to what she had to say.

Sophia told us that Make-A-Wish is a worldwide organization that started in the United States in 1980. “It’s a charity that helps children who have got very serious illnesses. Make-A-Wish helps children feel happy even though they are sick, by making their wishes and dreams come true,” Sophia explained.

We asked Sophia how Make-A-Wish had first started. She said it had all begun with a very sick young boy called Chris, who had been dreaming for a long time of becoming a policeman. Sophia said lots of people had wanted to find a way to make Chris’s dream come true ----so, with everybody’s help, Chris, only seven years old at the time, had been a “policeman” for a day. “When people saw how delighted Chris was when his dream came true, they decided to try and help other sick children too, and that was the beginning of Make-A-Wish,” explained Sophia.

Sophia also told us the Foundation tries to give children and their families a special, happy time. A Make-A-Wish volunteer visits the families and asks the children what they would wish for if they could have anything in the world. Sophia said the volunteers were important because they were the ones who helped to make the wishes come true. They do this either by providing things that are necessary, or by raising money or helping out in whatever they can.

In ancient Egypt, a shopkeeper discovered that he could attract customers to his shop simply by making changes to its environment. Modern businesses have been following his lead, with more strategies.

One strategy involves where to display the goods. For example, stores place fruits and vegetables in the first section. They know that customers who buy the healthy food first will feel happy so that they will buy more junk food later in their trip. In department stores, the women’s shoe section is generally next to the women’s cosmetics(化妆品) section. While the shop assistant is going back to find the right size shoe, bored customers are likely to wander over and find some cosmetics they might want to try later.

Besides, businesses seek to appeal to customers’ senses. Stores notice that the smell of baked goods encourages shopping, so they make their own bread each morning and then fan the bread smell into the store throughout the day. Music sells goods, too. Researchers in Britain found that when French music was played, sales of French wine went up.

When it comes to the selling of houses, businesses also use highly rewarding strategies. They find that customers make decision in the first few seconds upon walking in the door, and turn it into a business opportunity. A California builder designed the structure of its houses smartly. When entering the house, the customer would see the Pacific Ocean through the windows, and then the pool through an open stairway leading to the lower level. The instant view of water on both levels helped sell these $10 million houses.

5Why do stores usually display fruits and vegetables in the first section?

ATo save customers time. BTo help sell junk food.

CTo show they are high quality foods. DTo sell them at discount prices.

6According to Paragraph 3, which of the following encourages customers to buy?

AOpening the store early in the morning.

BDisplaying British wines next to French ones.

CFilling the store with the smell of fresh bread.

DInviting customers to play music.

7What is the California builder’s story intended to prove?

AThe house structure is a key factor customers consider.

BThe more costly the house is, the better it sells.

CA good first impression increases sales.

DAn ocean view is much to the customers’ taste.

8What is the main purpose of the passage?

ATo introduce how businesses have grown from the past.

BTo explain how businesses turn people into their customers.

CTo report researches on customer behavior.

DTo show dishonest business practices.

C

Grown-ups are often surprised by how well they remember something they learned as children but have never practiced ever since. A man who has not had a chance to go swimming for years can still swim as well as ever when he gets back in the water. He can get on a bicycle after many years and still ride away. He can play catch and hit a ball as well as his son. A mother who has not thought about the words for years can teach her daughter the poem that begins “Twinkle, twinkle, little star” or remember the story of Cinderella or Goldilocks and the Three Bears.

One explanation is the law of overlearning, which can be stated as follows: Once we have learned something, additional learning trials increase the length of time we still remember it.

In childhood we usually continue to practice such skills as swimming, bicycle riding, and playing baseball long after we have learned them. We continue to listen to and remind ourselves of words such as “Twinkle, twinkle, little star” and childhood tales such as Cinderella and Goldilocks. We not only learn but overlearn.

The multiplication tables (乘法口诀表) are an exception to the general rule that we forgot rather quickly the things that we learn in school, because they are another of the things we overlearn in childhood.

The law of overlearning explains why cramming(突击准备) for an examination, though it may result in a passing grade, is not a satisfactory way to learn a college course. By cramming, a student may learn the subject well enough to get by on the examination, but he is likely soon to forget almost everything he learned. A little overlearning, on the other hand, is really necessary for one’s further development.

9The author explains the law of overlearning by .

Asetting down general rules Bmaking a comparison

Cusing examples Dpresenting research findings

10According to the author, being able to use multiplication table is .

A. a special case of cramming Ba result of overlearning

C. a skill to deal with math problems Da basic step towards advanced studies

11What does the word “they” in paragraph 4 refer to?

AThe multiplication tables BCommonly accepted rules

CThings easily forgotten DSchool subjects

12. What’s the author’s opinion on cramming?

AIt leads to failure in college exams. BIt’s possible to result in poor memory.

CIt increases student’s learning interest. DIt’s helpful only in a limited way.

D

第二节(5小题;每小题2分,满分l0)

根据短文内容,从短文后的选项中选出能填入空白处的最佳选项。选项中有两项为多余选项。

Kids' health: Four steps for fighting stress

Everybody gets stressed from time to time.   16    Some ways of dealing with stress-like screaming or hitting someone don't solve much. But other ways, like talking to someone you trust, can lead you to solving your problem or at least feeling better.

Try taking these four steps the next time you are stressed:

Get support. When you need help, reach out to the people who care about you. Talk to trusted adult, such as parents or other relatives.     17   They might have had similar problems, such as dealing with a test, or the death of a beloved pet.

Don't take it out on yourself. Sometimes when kids are stressed and upset they take it out on themselves. Oh, dear, that's not a good idea. Remember that there are always people to help you. Don't take it out on yourself.      18

Try to solve the problem. After you're calm and you have support from adults and friends, it's time to get down to business.     19     Even if you can't solve it all, you can solve a piece of it.

Be positive. Most stress is temporary(暂时的). Remember stress does go away, especially when you figure out the problem and start working on solving it. These steps aren't magic, but they do work. And if you can stay positive as you make your way through a tough time, you'll help yourself feel better even faster.      20

AThen, find a way to calm down.

BAnd don't forget about your friends.

CYou need to figure out what the problem is.

DAh, it feels so good when the stress is gone.

EDifferent people feel stress in different ways.

FNotice your friends' feelings and find a way to help them.

GAsk for a helping hand to get you through the tough situation.

Dear Lihua,

I am writing to you with regard to your advertisement published in the newspaper China Daily. I am interested in this learning program and I am considering attending your training classes in the international department of your school. Could you be kind enough to give me some information about your training classes?

To begin with, I would like to know in which province your school is located, and I am eager to know about the climate of your city. Besides, I want to learn how many courses are given and when the courses will start and how many class hours there are per week. Additionally I’m also interested in knowing how much I have to pay for the courses and whether accommodation is included. It is not clear to me whether there is a host family or a school dormitory. How many students are there in a dormitory? Finally, I would be grateful if you could inform me whether there is any extra charge for the textbooks.

It would be highly appreciated if you could reply to me at your earliest convenience.

Yours faithfully,

John
