Should there be two focuses available in Chinese high schools (humanity focus and science focus)？Please give specific reasons to support your argument.

In some Chinese high schools, there are two focuses available: humanity focus and science focus. Some people think that there should not be two separate focuses. I maintain that the two focuses are necessary. The reasons are as follows.

To begin with, a versatile person can hardly succeed in modern society. In the past time, it was possible for an intelligent person to know almost every branch of knowledge. For instance, Leonardo da Vinci not only painted many famous paintings, but also made numerous inventions. But nowadays, knowledge has become divided and subdivided into countless, narrowly defined branches. Highly-skilled “experts” have to devote the greater part of their lives to a very limited field of study in order to compete with their counterparts. It’s a specialist, not a versatile person, who wins our admiration. Therefore, it’s not necessary to require everyone to know every branch of knowledge. After all, time is limited for us, we need a focus to concentrate on, no matter it’s a humanity focus or a science focus.

Furthermore, choosing either one from the two focuses is better than studying all the courses. If there are not two focuses available in Chinese high school, students will be required to study all the courses. But different people have different talents. If we require a student fond of humanity subjects to study physics, it might be torture. For example, the famous writer Qian Zhongshu, was good at humanity courses but poor in mathematics. If he was required to get good marks in mathematics in high school, maybe it would waste a lot of his time. Fortunately he decided to pursue in a humanity focus and finally achieved success in literature. Similarly we couldn’t require the famous mathematician Hua Luogeng to achieve the same high level in humanity courses as that in mathematics.

Finally, the division between the humanities and science will help the students in high school to prepare for their college studies. After they decide to take one of the two focuses, they can devote their time and energy to it, and concentrate on it as soon as possible. This will save them a lot of time, and help them succeed in their future university studies.

Although high school is a period when students should pay more attention to basic knowledge systems, all the courses are beneficial to build students’ knowledge, I still believe in having two focuses in Chinese high schools is more realistic and, has more advantages than disadvantages.
