If Confucius(孔子) were alive today and could celebrate his September 28 birthday with a big cake, there would be a lot of candles. He’d need a fan(扇子) or a strong wind to help him put them out.

While many people in China remember Confucius on his special day, few people in the United States will give him a passing thought. It's nothing personal. Most Americans don't even remember the birthdays of their own national heroes.

But that doesn't mean that Americans don't care about Confucius. In many ways he has become a bridge that foreigners must cross if they want to reach a deeper understanding of China.

In the past two decades, the Chinese studies programs have gained huge popularity in Western universities. More recently, the Chinese government has set up Confucius Institutes (学院)in more than 80 countries. These schools teach both Chinese language and culture. The main courses of Chinese culture usually include Chinese art, history and philosophy(哲学). Some social scientists suggest that Westerners should take advantage of the ancient Chinese intelligence to make up the shortcomings of Western philosophy. Students in the United States, at the same time, are racing to learn Chinese. So they will be ready for life in a world where China is an same power with the United States. Businessmen who hope to make money in China are reading books about Confucius to understand their Chinese customers.

So the old thinker's ideas are still alive and well.

Today China attracts the West more than ever, and it will need more to introduce Confucius and Chinese culture to the West.

As for the old thinker, he will not be forgotten by people in the West, even if his birthday is.

29. The purpose or the first paragraph is mainly to _______.

A. attract the readers' interest in the subject

B. provide some key facts about Confucius

C. show great respect for the ancient thinker

D. prove the popularity of modern birthday celebrations

30. We can learn from Paragraph 4 that American students _______.

A. take an active part in Chinese competitions

B. try to get high scores in Chinese exams

C. fight for a chance to learn Chinese

D. show great interest in studying Chinese nowadays.

31. What is the best title for this passage?

A. Forgotten Wisdom in America. B. Huge Fans of the Chinese Language.

C. Old Thinker with a Big Future. D. Chinese Culture for Westerners.

D

Dr. Michael Prager, a leading Botox(肉毒杆菌毒素,用于美容的一种细菌) expert, said that a growing number of women are developging something called computer face. He also said that professionals who worked long hours in front of a screen were ending up with saggy jowls(松弛的面颊),turkey neck and deep-set wrinkles(皱纹) on their forehead and around their eyes.

The Botox expert said that, of all his clients, office workers were most likely to show premature (过早的)signs(迹象) of aging. If you are one of the unfortunate people who frown(皱眉)while you are concentrating on the screen then, over time, you will end up with frown lines.’’ Dr. Prager said. What is perhaps more surprising is the number of women with saggy jowls because they are sitting in one position for so long. If you spend most of the time looking down then the neck muscles shorten and go saggy, eventually giving you a second neck.

Dr. Prager, who has a practice near Harley Street in London, said he encourages his clients(客户) to put a mirror next to their computer so they can see if they are frowning at the screen. When people are stressed or thinking hard about something, then they will often put on a grumpy face' without even knowing what they are doing. When my clients put a mirror next to their desk, they are often surprised by the angry, frowning face which stares back at them.

He said, The women I am seeing at the moment have only been using computers at work for the last decade or so. But women in their 20s have grown up with them and use them for every single task. I think the problem is going to become much, much worse. In another ten years, they could be looking quite awful.

Dr. Prager said there are several simple steps which could avoid computer face such as regular screen breaks and stretching(伸展) the neck muscles. And, of course, there is always Botox. He said that , after a couple of sessions of Botox, the habit of grumpy face can be broken.

32. According to the passage, what makes women develop a computer face?

A. Frowning every now and then

B. Concentrating on computers frequently

C. Working too long in front of a screen

D. Sitting in the same place for along time

33. According to the passage, which of the following are signs of aging?

A. Saggy jowls and short necks B. Turkey neck and frown lines

C. Deep-set wrinkles and angry faces D. Second neck and stressed muscles

34. The underlined word grumpyin Paragraph3 probably means?

A. happy B. surprised C. angry D. relaxed

35. From the last 2 paragraphs, we can know that_____

A. computer face is avoidable

B. we should give up using computers

C. we should break the habit of grumpy face

D. the younger generation seldom use computers

录音原文

Text 1

W: Do you think we should paint the walls blue to match the cupboards, or just keep them white?

M: I think we should paint them brown, to match the table.

Text 2

W: There used to be a bank here, right across the post office, didn’t there? What happened to it?

M: Yes. They destroyed it to build some apartment buildings. The bank moved two blocks down, next to the grocery store.

Text 3

M: Do you want to come over tonight? My parents are at a restaurant, so I’m going to watch a movie.

W: OK. I just need to finish my homework first.

Text 4

W: Excuse me, sir? I think you dropped this on the ground.

M: Oh, my wallet! I wish there was money inside I could give to you. Would you like some cookies instead?

Text 5

M: This is a great recipe. Can I borrow it?

W: Sure. The recipe is in the book on the table. I got it in one of my favorite bookstores. So what do you think my special ingredient is?

Text 6

W: How much bread should we buy? Each bag has 12 slices.

M: We share the apartment with four other people, so two bags should be enough.

W: What next?

M: We need to get one big bottle of milk and 24 eggs.

W: Here you are. Should we get some fruit and vegetables?

M: I’ll let you do that. And I’ll get some cold meat.

W: OK. Meet you in the front of the store?

M: Sure.

Text 7

M: What’re you reading? Is that the homework for your English class?

W: No, I got this at the library. It’s a fiction book about a young woman who travels around the world. I try to read a book every month.

M: Good for you! I should read more, too. I usually go outside and play baseball though.

W: Well, my mom loves to read and started reading to me when I was young. My brother never cared about it like I did He’d rather draw pictures and make art. But I’ve loved it for as long as I can remember.

M: That’s extremely good.

Text 8

M: Honey, when we get to the restaurant, I’ll drop you and the kids off. Get a table for us while I park the car.

W: Fine. But don’t be long, please. I’m hungry!

M: It could take me half an hour. Downtown is crowded tonight. Go ahead and order some dishes and drinks while you’re waiting.

W: All right, I will. Would you like juice, soda or Coke?

M: I’ll have a Coke. And let’s get the fried mushrooms. The seafood is good, too.

W: Why don’t we get Cokes and small plates of seafood to share, then?

M: Perfect! Order some fries, too. You choose one or two more dishes. Here, we’re in front of the restaurant.

W: OK.

Text 9

W: Can you help me pack my bag? I’ve never been camping before.

M: Don’t worry. We are not going to be sleeping outside.

W: Really? I thought we were going to be sleeping by a fire.

M: No. We will be staying in my family’s house by a lake.

W: Oh. That’s better. So what do I need?

M: You don’t need very many clothes. We’re only going for two days.

W: OK. So when do we leave?

M: The day after tomorrow. I will call you after work tomorrow, OK?

W: OK, bye!

Text 10

Good evening, everyone, and thank you for listening to News Channel Five. Our report tonight is about the new zoo that opened last week in our city. Our reporters went down there yesterday to look at the place, and it is amazing! There are different areas of the zoo with special animal exhibits. The water area has many beautiful fish and some penguins. The land area has tigers, lions, elephants, and even two giraffes! The jungle area holds many different types of monkeys and birds. It’s huge. But don’t worry, you won’t get lost. There are maps everywhere that tell you where to go. There is a food area with places to eat lunch for only $10 a person. There are also some stores in which you can buy souvenirs. It costs $25 a ticket to get into the zoo, but it’s definitely worth the money. Bring your children or your friends, or just go by yourself tomorrow!
