I went to the Tsavo National Park in northern Kenya for a film. We set off early for a distant water hole. A huge elephant covered with dry mud, drank calmly and deeply. He might have traveled 50 km to reach the water. He wasn’t going to hurry now. We thought that he’d drink a while and rest in the shade, and then drink again. What actually happened was that he drank deeply and stepped away. Then he suddenly fell down. Within minutes he was dead.

We called animal doctor Jeremiah Poghon immediately. He removed the head of a poisoned arrow from the elephant’s body, and let out over 100 liters of pus()--the result of the elephant’s meeting with a poacher months ago.

Today’s poacher shoots from a distance. An arrow, covered with poison, is fired into the body of an elephant. If the poacher is lucky, the elephant might die in an hour or two; if not, he might have to follow the elephant for days before it dies. Often the arrow head fails to kill the elephant at once-- it doesn’t mean the poison won’t finally kill the elephant, but it will be a slow death.

Living in Tsavo through these times, I could see the results of poaching from time to time. When I think about the death of that elephant, what stays with me is the extraordinary silence after the shocking sound of his body hitting the ground. I took some comfort from the knowledge that as the dead body returned to the soil, some animals would benefit-- but I couldn’t escape the feeling that with the death of such a large animal, the world seemed to be a poorer and emptier place.

24. While filming near the water hole, the author and his team .

A. knew the elephant was injured B. found the elephant acted violently

C. tried their best to save the elephant D. thought the elephant was in good condition

25. According to the passage, the underlined word “poacher” is probably .

A. A hunter who kills or catches animals illegally B. A kind of fierce meat-eating animal

C. A serious disease that can infect elephants D. A kind of deadly poison

26. Further examination showed that the dead elephant .

A. had suffered a lot B. was killed by a poisonous needle

C. had suffered an hour or two D. had had a good fight with a poacher

27. Why did the author write the article?

A. To introduce the African elephant. B. To show the cruelty of poaching.

C. To describe his filming experience. D. To ask readers to protect wild animals.

C

From a young age, it was my dream to go to Africa and work with animals. Everybody

laughed at me, but my mother, Vanne, told me never to give up, and that I could always find a way. So, when I was 23, after saving up my earnings from working as a waitress, I went to wild Africa and began my work. In 1960 I went to the Gombe Stream Chimpanzee( 黑 猩)Reserve( 保护区). At that time, we knew nothing of the behavior for social structure of chimps, and I was to go there and see what I could find out. Usually, when you wake up, you leave your dreams behind you, but I found myself waking up into my dream.

As the British government wouldn’t let me go without older women’s company, my amazing mother--then in her mid-fifties--came with me and stayed for four months. We shared a second-hand army tent, and we used the stream for fresh water and washing. We could swim in the lake, although there were crocodiles.

It was surprisingly beautiful there, although both my mother and I nearly died of malaria(痢疾). I was scared I wouldn’t be able to do what I had set out to, because, at first, the chimps ran away from me in fear. I spent my days watching, listening, tracking and, in the evening, writing up my notes.

For my mother, who stayed back at the camp, it must have been terrifying, and very lonely. There were snakes and spiders, as well as an old leopard ( 豹 )who would come by. But she had an amazing way with people, and would hand out medicines to the fishermen, who saw her as a kind of doctor.

In my fifth month there, I finally saw one of the chimps, which I called David Grebeard, stripping ( 剥 光 ) straw to “fish” for termites( 白 蚁 ). I proved that man was not the only toolmaker, and that everything had to be redefined.

32. In the author’s opinion .

A. an organization supported her trip to Africa

B. no one wanted to accompany her to work with animals

C. it was her mother’s encouragement that helped her realize her dream

D. her dream to go to Africa and work with animals was easy to realize

33. It can be inferred from the first paragraph that

A. the author was scared of chimps

B. the author was familiar with chimps’ habits

C. the author became the head of the reserve(保护区)

D. the author was pleased with her work in the reserve

34. How did the author feel about her life in wild Africa ?

A.It was exciting and adventurous B.It was boring and dangerous

C.It was meaningless but pleasant D.It was not worth the author’s efforts

35. Working with the animals, the author found that . A.the animals in fact are not dangerous

B. many animals are good medicines to doctors

C. the chimps are in fact cleverer than human beings

D. some animals can make tools like human beings

Everyone knows that fish is good for health.

36 But it seems that many people don’t

cook fish at home. Americans eat only about fifteen pounds of fish per person per year, but we

eat twice as much fish in restaurants as at home. Buying, storing, and cooking fish isn’t

difficult.

37 This text is about how to buy and cook fish in an easy way.

38 Fresh fish should smell sweet: you should feel that you’re standing at the ocean’s

edge. Any fishy or strong smell means the fish isn’t fresh.

39 When you have bought a fish and arrive home, you’d better store the fish in the

refrigerator if you don’t cook it immediately, but fresh fish should be stored in your fridge for

only a day or two. Frozen fish isn’t as tasty as the fresh one.

There are many common methods used to cook fish.

40 First, clean it and season it

with your choice of spices(调料). Put the whole fish on a plate and steam it in a steam pot for 8

to 10 minutes if it weighs about one pound.(A larger one will take more time.) Then, it’s ready

to serve.

A. The fats in fish are thought to help prevent heart disease.

B. The fish will go bad within hours

C. When buying fish, you should first smell it.

D. It just requires a little knowledge.

E. This is how you can do it.

F. The easiest is to steam it.

G. Do not buy it.

书面表达(25 分)

Dear Editor,

As a student reader, I am writing to talk about the English textbooks published by

your house. These books have many advantages. One of them is that we can find a variety

of topics, such as science, culture and history. These topics, I think, are very popular with

us students. What’s more, along with the texts there are many beautiful and colorful

pictures, which can help us understand English better. Even the students who used to

dislike English have turned out to be interested in the subject. However, some of the texts

have too many new words and expressions which are hard for us. Therefore, I’d like to

suggest changing them into easier ones.

Best regards,

Li Hua
