There are 3 passages in this part. Each passage is followed by some questions or unfinished statements. For each of them there are four choices marked A, B, C and D. You should decide on the best choice and mark the corresponding letter on the Answer Sheet with a single line through the center.

Passage One
Questions 36 to 40 are based on the following passage.
Henry Ford, the famous U.S. inventor and manufacturer, once said, “The business of America is business.” By this he meant that the U.S. way of life is based on the values of the business world.

Few would argue with Ford’s statement. A brief glimpse at a daily newspaper vividly shows how much people in the United States think about business. For example, nearly every newspaper has a business section, in which the deals and projects, finances and management, stock prices and labor problems of corporations are reported daily. In addition, business news can appear in every other section. Most national news has an important financial aspect to it. Welfare, foreign aid, the federal budget, and the policies of the Federal Reserve Bank are all heavily affected by business. Moreover, business news appears in some of the unlikeliest places. The world of arts and entertainment is often referred to as “the entertainment industry” or “show business.”

The positive side of Henry Ford’s statement can be seen in the prosperity that business has brought to U.S. life. One of the most important reasons so many people from all over the world come to live in the United States is the dream of a better job. Jobs are produced in abundance because the U.S. economic system is driven by competition. People believe that this system creates more wealth, more jobs, and a materially better way of life.

The negative side of Henry Ford’s statement, however, can be seen when the word business is taken to mean big business. And the term big business------referring to the biggest companies, is seen in opposition to labor. Throughout U.S. history working people have had to fight hard for higher wages, better working conditions, and the right to form unions. Today, many of the old labor disputes are over, but there is still some employee anxiety. Downsizing----the laying off of thousands of workers to keep expenses low and profits high-----creates feelings of insecurity for many.

A. where all business are managed scientifically

B. which encourages free trade at home and abroad

C. which normally works according to the federal budget

D. where people’s chief concern is how to make money

B. even arts and entertainment are regarded as business

C. Americans of all professions know how to do business

D. even public organizations concentrate on working for profits

38. According to the passage, immigrants choose to settle in the U.S., dreaming that___________.

A. they will make a fortune overnight here

B. they can be more competitive in business

C. they can start profitable business there

D. they will find better chances of employment

39. Henry Ford’s statement can be taken negatively because_____________.

A. there is a conflicting relationship between big corporations and labor

B. there are many industries controlled by a few big capitalists

C. public services are not run by the federal government

D. working people are discouraged to fight for their rights

40. A company’s efforts to keep expenses low and profits high may result in _____________.

A. a rise in workers’ wages

B. improvement of working conditions

C. reduction in the number of employees

D. fewer disputes between labor and management

Passage Two
Questions 41 to 45 are based on the following passage.

Charlie Chaplin has broken all records in making people laugh. No one has so set a whole world laughing as the little man with the walking stick and the overlarge shoes.

Much has been written about Chaplin's art and his career, and opinions have ranged widely. But perhaps those who called him the most general human being of our time came closest to the truth. Those who have called him a genius stress the timeless and common qualities in his work. It is an art filled with sad elements and deep human feeling, with which an audience cannot help but become involved. It is for these reasons, I believe, that the figure of Charlie has attracted generation after generation.

All the writers who give accounts of Chaplins life agree that Charlies unhappy early years in the area in London where houses were dirty had a great influence on his development and on the type of films he made. Chaplin himself emphasizes it in his memoirs (回忆录). The more one reads about his earliest period, the more one tends to agree. Indeed, his suffering youth had a lasting influence on him.

Chaplin was never afraid to deal with subjects causing much disagreement in his films. He gave a humorous performance on war only a few weeks before the American soldiers came home from World War I in 1918. This was regarded as madness, but the performance was well received. The performance was so perfect that even the returning soldiers found it impossible to hate it and deeply appreciated this short and humorous performance on what for them had been unpleasant reality. Chaplin gave numerous performances attacking capital governments, satirizing (讽刺) the cruelty of the machine age and even making fun of Hitler.

Years after his death, the funny films of motion picture actor and director Charlie Chaplin continue to be popular. He is particularly well known for his success as a creator of humorous presentations that make fun of people, the establishment, or networks.

41. All of the following about Charlie Chaplin are true except __________.

A. he was born in the USA

B. he was a great film actor

C. he had an unhappy early life

D. he made fun of Hitler in his films

42. According to the author, Charlie Chaplin has been popular with generation after generation because _________.

A. he set the whole world laughing

B. his performances get people involved

C. his works appeal to people in different periods

D. both B and C

43. According to Charlie Chaplins life history writers, _________ had a strong influence on the type of films he made.

A. the society in which he lived

B. the audience who praised and admired him

C. those who called him a genius

D. his unhappy early years in the poor area in London

44. According to the passage, which of the following is true?

A. There are timeless qualities in Chaplins work because he didnt involve himself in political affairs.

B. Chaplin became popular years after his death.

C. Chaplins performance is funny without any sad elements.

D. Chaplins films are the combinations of funny and sad elements.

45. This passage was ____________.

A. written by Charlie Chaplin

B. written about Charlie Chaplin

Passage Three

Shoppers on Black Friday, the traditional start of the holiday shopping season in America, are very aggressive. Some even start queuing outside stores before dawn to be the first to lay their hands on heavily discounted goods. Despite the craziness at many stores, however, the recession appears to have accelerated the pace at which shoppers are abandoning mortars(实体店) in favor of online retailers ---- e-tailers. So this year Black Friday also marks the start of many conventional retailers’ attempts to regain the initiative.

E-commerce holds particular appeal in straitened times as it enables people to compare prices across retailers quickly and easily. Buyers can sometimes avoid local sales taxes online, and shipping is often free. No wonder, then, that online shopping continues to grow even as the offline sort shrinks.

The shift in spending to the Internet is good news for companies like PG that lack retail outlets of their own. But it is a big concern for conventional retailers, whose prices are often higher than those of e-tailers, since they must bear the extra expense of running stores. Happily, however, conventional retailers are in a better position to fight back than last year, when overstocking forced them to resort to destructive discounting.

The most obvious response to the growth of e-tailing is for conventional retailers to redouble their own efforts online. The online arms of big retailers are performing well, on the whole.

Retailers are also trying to make shopping seem fun and exciting to act against the economic gloom. One common tactic is to set up “pop-up” stores, which appear for a short time before vanishing again, to foster a sense of novelty and urgency.

Shoppers are increasingly looking for an “experience” when they go to stores, says Jack Anderson of Hornall Anderson, a branding and marketing firm, and are no longer interested in purely “transaction-based conventional stores”. Apple, which encourages customers to try out its devices in its stores, is considered a pioneer of this strategy, and has attracted many imitators.

Stores are also trying to lure customers by offering services that are not available online. Best Buy, a consumer-electronics retailer, has started selling music lessons along with its musical instruments. The idea is to bring people back to its shops regularly, increasing the likelihood that they will develop the habit of shopping there.
Questions 46 to 50 are based on the following passage.

46. The recession of stores appears to have accelerated because __________.

A. stores refuse to give heavy discounts

B. more shoppers turn to Internet shopping

C. buyers are tired of queuing outside stores

D. customers are not confident in the economy

47. Why is online shopping appealing to customers?

A. Goods sold online tend to be of higher quality.

B. Online shoppers do not have to pay purchase tax.

C. Many online retailers offer free delivery of goods.

D. Prices are often the lowest for the same goods.

48. What is said about conventional stores in the third paragraph?

A. They start to set up their online stores.

B. They hold a better situation than last year.

C. They make more profits from higher prices.

D. They are not faced with the problem of overstock.

49. According to the passage, retailers launched “ pop-up” stores to_________.

A. offer shoppers new and exciting experiences

B. cut down the extra expense of running stores

C. attract customers with destructive discounting

D. let customers learn about their products online

50. What does Best Buy do to win customers back from online retailers?

A. It encourages customers to try out its instruments.

B. It provides regular customers with shuttle services.

C. It enables customers to shop via their cell phones.

D. It sells music lessons together with its instruments.
