The Feeling of Reading《Miss Brill》

《Miss Brill》is a story about an old and single woman named Miss Brill. Every Sunday afternoon, she would go to a park and sit on the bench to watch the show of the band or listen to other’s conversation. This story is written in third person, so we can see the protagonist more objectively and understand the theme of it more easily.

The characteristic of this story is the description of protagonist’s psychological activities. And it also pays lots of attention to details. At the start of the story, Miss Brill treated the fur in a really tender way. It seemed like she was very leisurely. We can guess that she could be a young, fashionable and relaxed lady. Then she went to the park, and found that the conductor of the band wore a new coat. She was very familiar with the music and even knew which part would be repeated. We can know that she should go to the park quite frequently. After that, the story tells us that Miss Brill liked listening to other’s conversation. She thought that she was sitting in other people’s lives while they talked round her. From this, we can know that Miss Brill might not be a young lady, while more possibly be an old and single woman who want to get rid of loneliness by this way. All the time, Miss Brill regarded what happened in the park as a play and thought that she was an actress in it. She was proud because of this. But when she heard someone laugh at her, she knew that she was just an old and silly woman in other’s eyes. She felt so hurt that she even didn’t buy any slice of honey cake and went straight to her little dark room. At last, she cried alone. It really makes me feel sympathetic.

In my opinion, this story is written to draw public attention to the life of the old through describing the psychology and behavior of the protagonist. Many single old people like Miss Brill, having no relatives and no friends, were considered behind the times. They have no one to share the joys and sorrows with. Especially in the free time, when others all have varieties of leisure activities, they are alone. At this moment, they are easier to feel lonely and sad. So they often choose to stay in a place with lots of people and pretend to be a part of other people’s life. They may think they are cared by others. However, the reality is they are still not respected and cared by others.

The government should pay more attention to the old to ensure the level of their life. And we people ought to respect and treat them sincerely. Only by these effective measures, can they no longer feel so lonely in the world.
