.阅读理解(15小题;每小题2分,满分30)

A

Charlie Rich had been recording all kinds of music for all kinds of labels throughout the late 1950s and 1960sand had a couple of hits—Lonely Weekends went into the Top 30 in the 1960s, so did Mohair Sam.

Despite his constant desire to try new things (actually, maybe because of that), Rich found himself without hits until 1973, when he became a superstar due to the great success of Behind Closed Doors. After all, this was a musician that had a minor country hit in 1970 with a revision of Frank Sinatra's Nice NEasy.

Behind Closed Doors, in some ways, is a similar spirit to that singlesince it's perfect between country and pop. Lyrically, it was a perfect country songthe narrator promises his devotion to his woman and how nobody understands their love, since they don't know what goes on behind closed doors. Musically, the melody certainly had a country rhythmbut it was stately, assuredand melodic, the kind of song that any singer would have been eager to make his or her own. Many tried. Percy Sledge, Albert King, Tom Jones, Dolly Parton, and Freddy Fender all recorded it; so did many other artists, including instrumentalists like Boots Randolph and Floyd Cramer. All of these were listenablesome were revelatorymany were pleasantserving to illustrate what an adaptable, welldesigned song Kenny O'Dell wrote. StillCharlie Rich's original version outdid them all, since it not only had one of Billy Sherrill's most excellent productions but Rich's astonishing, delicate delivery made it seem like he had written the song himself about his own love for his wife.

It became a hit not just on the country chartswhere it peaked at Number One, but on the pop charts as well. It was named Single on the Year by the CMA.In the same year, 1973, Rich was named Male Vocalist of the Year, largely due to this song and its successor, The Most Beautiful Girl in the World and it went gold. Even with such reputation, the most impressive thing about Behind Closed Doors is that it deservedly made a cult(崇拜) figure of a genuine country superstar.

36Which of the following songs became a hit in the 1960s?

ABehind Closed Doors.

BThe Most Beautiful Girl in the World.

CMohair Sam.

DNice NEasy.

37Behind Closed Doors was written by________.

AKenny O'Dell BFrank Sinatra

CCharlie Rich DAlbert King

38Charlie Rich outdid Percy Sledge in Behind Closed Doors in that________.

Ahe was named Male Vocalist of the Year

Bhe illustrated the song better

Che wrote the song himself about love

Dhe desired to try new things himself

39The author wrote the passage to________.

Atell us the story of Charlie Rich's songs

Bpersuade us to listen to Charlie Rich's songs

Ctell us the success of Charlie Rich's songs

As part of the celebrations for Johnny Mercer's hundredth anniversary, the BBC Concert Orchestra organized the performance of his final stage musical, The Good Companions, at the Watford Colosseum.

The Good Companions is based on JB Priestley's most popular novel. It tells of an uppermiddle class woman, Elizabeth Trant, who—quite against the advice of her relatives—decides to use her newfound wealth to fund a group of strolling players whose director has run off with all the money. Trant finds her true self in the theatre, while the enterprise also helps the workingclass Jess Oakroyd, to get out of his mundane(平凡的) existence and instead work as a handyman(勤杂工) for the group. The similarly unhappy Inigo Jollifant, who is a teacher at a rundown private school, becomes the music hall group's pianist and becomes famous as a hit songwriter.

Andre Previn was an experienced Hollywood composer and conductor. Mercer, meanwhile, received nineteen Academy Award nominationsand was the lyricist of scores of American standards.

It's hard to know who deserves the most praise out of the cast, because they were very well chosen, both vocally and as actors, Ian Talbot inhabited the role of Jess Oakroyd with charm and sympathy, and he maintained his Yorkshire accent throughout the delivery of his songs. The superb Liz Robertson was perfect as Miss Trant. She managed to show the many sides of the character. Mark Meadows also shone as Inigo Jollifant. To play the teacherturnedcomposer is no mean feat since Jollifant has to play the piano while singing at several points, but for the multitalented Meadows—former member and musical director of The Swingle Singers—there seemed to be no problem.

So one couldn't have hoped for a better team, and The Good Companions is indeed a witty and engaging piece.

40What is the theme of the story?

ALove. BHate.

CEscape. DFriendship.

41What does the author think of the performance of the opera?

ASplendid. BBad.

CJust soso. DDisappointing.

42Paragraph 2 is mainly about________.

Athe staging Bthe setting

Cthe cast Dthe story

43What would be the best title for the passage?

AReview of The Good Companions.

BThe Celebrations for Johnny Mercer's Hundredth Anniversary.

CThe Development of a BBC Concert Orchestra.

DThe Formation of a Better Team.

Vienneseborn composer(作曲家) Frederick Loewe, whom we remember from his musical scores that include My Fair Lady, Gigi and Camelot, was not always famous. He studied piano with the great masters of Europe and achieved huge success as a musician and composer in his early years. But when he moved to the United Stateshe failed as a piano player. For a while he tried other types of work including prospecting(勘探) for gold and boxing. But he never gave up his dream and continued to play the piano and write music.

During those years, he could not always afford to make payments on his piano. One daybent over the keyboardhe heard nothing but the music that he played with such rare inspiration(灵感). When he finished and looked up, he was surprised to find that he had an audience of three moved men who were sitting on the floor.

They said nothing and made no movement toward the piano. Instead, they dug into their pockets, pooled together enough money for the payment, placed it on the piano and walked out, empty handed. Moved by the beauty of his music, these men recognized excellence and reacted to it.

Whatever you are, be a good one. If what you do is worth doing, if you believe that who you are is of value, then you can't afford to be content with mediocrity(平庸;平凡). When you choose the path of excellence through this life, you will bring to it your best and receive the best it can offer in return. And you will know what it is to be satisfied.

44Before Frederick Loewe moved to America, he________.

Awas not famous

Bwas successful in music

Cfailed as a piano player

Dproduced three famous musical works

45What did Frederick Loewe once try other jobs for?

ATo make more friends.

BTo experience life.

CTo make a living.

DTo give up his dream.

46What can we learn from Frederick Loewe's success?

ASuccess belongs to those who never give up.

BNever too late to learn.

CLearn to walk before you run.

DLost time is never found again.

47According to the last paragraph, which of the following shows the best relationship between mediocrity and excellence in meaning?

D

.任务型阅读(10小题;每小题1分,满分10)

请认真阅读下面短文,并根据所读内容在文章后的空格内填入最恰当的单词。每空格只能填一个单词。

I like finding ways to improve my life and bring more positivity into it. Although I'm just at the beginning of that journey, I've already found some useful ideas for doing just that. Maybe they can help you to have more fun, improve your relationships, your business, your health and your life. I hope so.

Appreciating as much as you can is one of those very simple things you can do to bring more positivity into your life. I have also found appreciation to be a great way to turn an angry, sad and frustrated mood around to a more positive one. Simply appreciate anywhere and everywhere in your day: appreciate the great weather, and appreciate the good looking guy that just walked past you. Appreciate the things you have and the things you experience. Doing this for a minute or two always gives me positive encouragement and improves my outlook on the world.

If you don't stop comparing yourself to others, then you'll just create a lot of unnecessary pain in your life. If you pass one person then you'll just find another person more successful than you. And your brief sense of being a winner will transform once again into anxiety, fear, stomachaches and possibly heart attacks. Instead start comparing yourself to yourself. Try to improve yourself and see how you grow, and become a more successful and happier person. Focus on yourself, not the other people around you, no matter if they are more or less successful. It may sound updated, but I feel it's both a healthier and more successful way to work and view life. Your emotions work backwards, too. So even if you don't feel positive, confident, calm or decisive you can act like it. And after you have done that for a few minutes, guess what happens? You will actually start to feel positive, confident, calm or decisive. If you don't know how to act, observe other people around you—it may be friends, coworkers, family or celebrities from any time and age—who have the quality you'd like to have. Then imitate them. If you don't believe in this, then just smile—even if you have to force yourself—for 30 seconds right now and see how you feel after that.

Michael Jordan once said“ I've missed more than 9,000 shots in my career. I've lost almost 300 games. 26 times, I've been trusted to take the game winning shot and missed. I've failed over and over and over again in my life. And that is why I succeed. Society may have brought you up to fear failure. But if you can rethink failure not as something to fear but rather useful feedback, it can improve your life largely. A failure may hurt for a while but then you can learn one or many lessons from it. And then you try again. And again. And failure becomes less and less frightening. All successful people have failed many, many times. But they know that there are still a lot of great new people and opportunities out there. So they try again. And sooner or later they have success once again.

Great ways to live a more positive life
