After visiting the Forbidden City, I thought I had seen the major royal remains of old China. But the Summer Palace, which is mainly made up of the Kunming Lake and the Longevity Hill, really impressed me.
Of course its name reminds the fact that former Emperors liked to indulge(沉溺) here during the hottest months of the year; but its original purpose was being a luxurious(奢华的) royal garden. Today it's the largest and best preserved royal park in China. And it's a dream place for those who want to explore Chinese gardening style that widely employs stones in their natural shape. It was while visiting the Summer Palace that our guide told us that ancient Chinese culture considers stones a gift from nature.
After the explanation, our guide gave us 30 minutes of free time to explore the Summer Palace by ourselves and a proposal on how we would enjoy spending it：“If you want, you can climb your way up to the Tower of Buddhist Incense(佛香阁). It's very beautiful and from the top you will have a wonderful view.”“Why not”， I thought, “I'm not going to let a couple of stairs scare me off.”This is how I spent my 30 minutes of relaxation, sweating like never before and taking pictures of the excellent scene that step by step developed before my eyes.
My guide was right: The buildings are absolutely beautiful, and even the smallest detail is perfect. The view on the lake was wonderful and I did enjoy stopping to admire it from the top. I couldn't help to have a deep breath again before going back to the real world.
I did try to picture myself walking along the peaceful and quiet passages, watching some tiny, slim and beautiful women hanging around welldecorated buildings. But I couldn't manage to. In Beijing, in August, none of the royal gardens, or buildings are absolutely peaceful or quiet, but simply filled with tourists, both foreigners and Chinese. Even so, I must admit that I loved the Summer Palace.
