Health food is a general term applied to kinds of food that is considered more healthy than the types of food sold in supermarkets. The most exact term of all and the narrowest classification within health food is organic food, used to describe food that has been grown on a particular kind of farm.

In choosing the type of food you eat, then, you have basically two choices: inorganic, processed (加工) food, or organic, unprocessed food. A wise decision should include study of the reason why processed food contains chemicals, some of which are proved to be poisonous and that vitamin content is greatly reduced in processed food.Bread is typically used by health food supporters as an example of a processed food. First, the seeds from which the grain is grown are treated with a chemical which is extremely harmful. Later, the grain is sprayed with a number of very deadly insecticides(杀虫剂). After the grain has been made into flour, it is made white with another chemical which is also poisonous. Next, a dough conditioner is added along with a softener. The conditioner and softener are poisons, and in fact, the softener has sickened and killed experimental animals.

A very poisonous antifungal(杀真菌)compound, is added to keep the bread from getting moldy (发霉的). Other food from the supermarket would show a similar pattern of processing and preserving (保存). You see, we buy our food on the basis of smell, color, and texture, instead of vitamin content, and manufacturers give us what we want, even if it is poisonous. The alternative? Eat health foods, preferably the organic variety.

58. What happens to food when it is processed?

A. The basic content remains the same. B. The vitamin content is greatly reduced.

C. The vitamin content increases a bit. D. Vitamin is not available after processing.

59. What do all of the additives (添加剂) in bread have in common?

A. They are all poisonous.

B. They are all organic.

C. They have all killed laboratory animals

D. They are all used to keep the bread from getting moldy.

60. We normally buy food on the basis of ________.

A. color and texture B. organic variety C. beauty D. refined (提取的) contents

C

A credit card that wont work unless its owners voice is heard may become an important weapon in the fight against economic fraud(欺诈).

The card using a built-in voice-recognition chip requires users to give a spoken password that it recognizes. The idea is to prevent thieves from using a stolen card to buy goods online.

A model built by engineers in California packs a microphone, a loudspeaker, a battery and a voice-recognition chip into a standard-sized credit card. The card is the length and width of an ordinary credit card but about three times as thick. The company now plans to make it thinner.

The voice card is based on an earlier Beep card technology designed to prevent fraud in online deals. The Beep card has no microphone, but has a built-in loudspeaker to utter an audible (听得见的) ID signal by a computers microphone to an online server(服务器). By confirming that signal matches the information in the card, the server can make sure that the user is not simply keying in a credit card number but actually has the card in his hand. The ID code, which only the server knows, changes each time the card is used.

This prevents fraudsters recording the beeps, noting the card details and then playing back the audible ID when they key in the details later. But this earlier Beep card technology cannot prevent illegal use of stolen cards. The new voice card can. The new voice card doesn’t identify itself by its ID until it has confirmed the real users spoken password. Thieves will be unable to use the card because even if they knew the password they would have to be able to copy the owners voice with a high degree of accuracy. The challenge for Beep card has been to develop voice-recognition and audio circuitry(声音电路).

The voice-recognition credit is powered by a mini battery. To extend batter life, the electronics have only to be switched on when the card is being used. Pressing a button on the cards surface allows one to hear a female voice saying,Say your password. If the voice-recognition software proves that the password is real, it sends its ID, which the server then identifies, allowing the deal to continue.

61. Why is the voice credit an important innovation?

A. It is cheap to make and buy. B. It can leave voice messages.

C. It makes online shopping easy. D. It makes fraud more difficult.

62. What is the problem with the model card?

A. It is too large. B. It is too thick. C. It cant be used online. D. It has no loudspeaker.

63. Which of the following about the earlier card is TRUE?

A. Its owner can change the ID code at will. B. Its user neednt key in the credit card number.

C. It can record its users spoken password.

D. It can be used by someone who has stolen it.

64. What can we infer from the last paragraph?

A. Further improvement should be made to extend battery life.

B. Only female voice passwords can be recognized by the card.

C. There are no limits to the use of the card.

D. Female customers will like using it.

Last summer, after 16 years in the United States, I traveled to the city in Russia where I grew up. I was the first in my family to return after all those years. My mom gave me a hand-drawn map showing the location of my grandfather’s tomb at the local cemetery, and she asked me to visit it.

It was really important to her that I go there. My grandfather died when I was little, and she wanted me to remember him. He was still very much alive in her mind, and she wanted him to continue to live in my mind as well.

So I promised that the first thing I’d do when I arrived would be to visit the cemetery. However, I got caught up in work, and I had a lot of catching up to do with my childhood friends. It wasn’t until a day before I was leaving that I found time to go to the cemetery.

It was late in the afternoon, and right by the entrance was a lady who was selling flowers. By then she had only seven carnations left in her bucket. I bought them all, but when I reached for my wallet, I realized I didn’t have the map with me. I had no idea what had happened to that map. And I had no idea where my grandfather’s tomb was located.

I could call my mom and ask her. But the problem was that I had already told her I’d gone to the cemetery. What was I going to say?

I found the main office. Fortunately it was open, and inside was a small office. Behind the counter was an old woman, and she said she’d help me locate my grandfather’s records.

A couple of minutes later, she came back with a printout. It turned out there were 17 Abraham Pikarskis on the list. I chose the two whose age I believed closely matched my grandfather’s.

I set off to look for them. I hoped that at least one would have a portrait on the tombstone. This way I’d know which tomb was mine.

I found the first tomb and it said Abraham Pikarski on it, but there was no portrait. Only an inscription (碑铭) : From the Loving Wife and Children.

I had no idea whether this was the right one, so I went off to look for the other one. I found it, too, and it was virtually indistinguishable from the first one. It said Abraham Pikarski, no portrait. The inscription was slightly different. It said: From the Grieving Family.

I had no idea what to do. Was my family the loving one or the grieving one? I was standing there waiting, thinking maybe some sort of special feeling would come to me. Maybe I’d feel some sort of close relationship with the person who was lying there.

I put three carnations on that tomb, and I went back to the first one. I stood there, too, for a while, and again I was hoping that I’d feel something special. But it was getting late, and I had to pack for the trip back to New York, so I put three carnations on this tomb.

I stood there with the last flower in my hand. Which Abraham Pikarski should it go to? Should I just throw it away? I had to come up with some sort of a solution.

Then, suddenly, I knew what to do. I put that flower on that same tomb where I was standing. I thought if this is really my grandfather who is lying there, then all is good, and he got the most. But if not, then let this be kind of comfort to the stranger, because somebody else’s grandson came all the way from America to pay his respects.

I went back to the hotel and flew home to New York the next day. I never found that map again.

Mom and Dad picked me up at the airport. On the way home from the airport, my mom started crying, “I’m so happy that you took the time to visit your grandfather’s tomb. It really means so much to me. You know when you called and told me you went there, I thought you were just saying it to make me feel good.”

When I was still in the air this morning, her cousin who lives in Russia had called and told my mother that she had just come from the cemetery and had seen my flowers there. So my mom knew that I had really done this.

Should I ask her how many flowers her cousin saw? Three or four?

But then I decided that maybe I should not say anything at all.

We all need physical exercise. Exercise uses up food we eat and keeps the body energetic. It works your muscles and makes your heart work hard so as to send blood to yourmuscles. So, exercise makes your heart and muscles strong. Exercise also makes you feelrefreshed. If you take regular exercises, you will stay happy and healthy.

Some Western countries, such as the United States, have problems with exercise. In theUS, many people lack exercise because it is hard for them. People have to workfrom dawn till dusk, so they don't have time to take exercise. They work in office buildingssitting in chairs all day long in front of computers. They cannot get much exercise sitting atdesk passively.

Some Westerners can get exercise walking from their homes to work. However, themajority of people cannot do this. It is too far from their homes to their offices. They have nochoice but to drive to work. In fact, some have to drive one or two hours to their offices. Thisis unfavorable in two ways. First, these people don't have a chance to exercise because theyare sitting in their cars for two to four hours each day. Second, driving is challengingespecially in rush hours and calls for too much attention. It makes a person verytired. So,when these people arrive home at night, they don't have the desire to take exercise after work.

Today, many people in the Westare overweight, which causes health problems for them.Doctors say exercise can help people both lose weight and improve their health. So manypeople are trying to get more exercise. But it takes time to change, and when people don't seea difference right away, they will be discouraged and stop exercising.

The Faster,the better?

As isvividly shownin thepicture, two men arecompeting against eachother in building walls. One man has built up an obviously higher but twisted wall, while the other's work is completely vertical, strong and solid though lower.

Thepictureimpliesaveryimportantruleofdoingthingsthatwealwaysneedabalance

between speed and quality. In our daily life, “The faster, the better” has become a motto for us due to the fiercely competitive environment of our society. However, our work has no value at all if we overlook the quality of it just like the man in the picture.

As students, with the heavy burdens of our studies, we are required to do things at high speed.

Instead of worshiping the high speed only, we should always bear it in mind that no matter how fastweneedto achieve something, quality may neverbe ignored. After all, it is ourtest results rather thanthe speedthatcounts. Onlywhen wegiveequal attentiontoboth qualityandspeed, can we achieve what we are fighting for.
