新视野大学英语新生入校分级考试试卷

Part I Reading Comprehension (Skimming and Scanning) (5 minutes) (10)

Directions: Read the following passage, and then fill in the blanks with the missing part for the following incomplete statements. Your answers should be written on Answer Sheet 1.

Most Americans spend far more of their leisure time with entertainment and information sources than in any other occupation. Of all information and entertainment sources, television is clearly dominant (支配的), with newspapers a close second, at least as a source of news and other information. Our exposure (暴露,接触) to all of these sources is important, however, because they all contribute (贡献) materials for the construction of the world in our heads. For most people, increased use of one medium does not decrease (减少) use of another. In fact, in certain cases, and especially for certain purposes, the more one uses one medium, the more likely one is to use others.

There are various factors that can cause you to expose yourself to one source selectively. Some of that selective exposure is probably due to the psychological (心理) pressure you feel when avoiding the discomfort caused by the confrontation with facts and ideas contrary to your beliefs, attitudes, or behavior. However, some selective exposure is not due to such pressure for consistency (一致) but to other factors, such as your age, education, and even the area in which you live and the people with whom you associate.

Quite a different sort of factor that affects your information and entertainment experiences is the social context of exposure—whether you are alone or with others when you are exposed to a medium; whether you are at home, at the office, in a theater, and so on. These contexts are as much a potential part of the message as film images on the screen or words on the page.

1. ____________________ are dominant sources of news and information.

2. Our exposure to information and entertainment sources is important because they provide ___________________ of our mental world.

3. Facts show that the more one uses one medium, the more likely one is _________________.

4. Factors that can cause us to expose ourselves to one source selectively _________

______________.

5. One quite different sort of factor that affects our information and entertainment experiences is the ______________________.

Robert Spring, a 19th century forger, was so good at his job that he was able to make his living for 15 years by selling false signatures (签名) of famous Americans. Spring was born in England in 1813 and arrived in Philadelphia in 1858 to open a bookstore. At first he prospered (兴隆) by selling his small but real collection of early US signatures. Discovering his ability at copying handwriting, he began imitating (模仿) signatures of George Washington and Ben Franklin and writing them on the title pages of old books. To lessen the chance of being found out, he sent his forgeries (伪造品) to England and Canada for sale.

Forgers have a hard time selling their products. A forger can’t approach a respectable buyer but must deal with people who don’t have much knowledge in the field. Forgers have many ways to make their work look real. For example, they buy old books to use the aged paper of the title page, and they can treat paper and ink with chemicals.

In Spring’s time, right after the Civil War, Britain was still fond of the Southern states, so Spring invented a respectable lady known as Miss Fanny Jackson, the only daughter of General “Stonewall” Jackson. For several years Miss Fanny’s money problems forced her to sell a great number of letters and manuscripts (手稿) belonging to her famous father. Spring had to work very hard to satisfy the demand. All this activity did not prevent Spring from dying in poverty (贫穷), leaving sharp-eyed experts the difficult task of separating his forgeries from the originals.

41. According to the context, what does “forger” mean?

A) A forger is a person who opens a bookshop.

B) A forger is a person who is good at his job.

C) A forger is a person who loves to cheat people.

D) A forger is a person who makes false things such as signatures.

42. How did Spring make his first fortune?

A) He prospered by selling fake signatures of famous people.

B) He became rich by selling books.

C) He became rich by selling his collection of real signatures.

D) He received a large amount of money from one of his relatives.

43. What was the trouble for forgers in their business mentioned in this passage?

A) They could not find anyone who was willing to buy their forgeries.

B) They found it very hard to forge the signatures of those famous people.

C) They found it difficult to sell their forgeries to people with knowledge.

D) They had no way to make their products attractive and true.

44. According to the passage, what can be said about Spring?

A) He was very good at forgery and earned money doing it.

B) He tried many times to make good forgeries but failed.

C) He could not meet the demand of Miss Fanny and was poor for a short time.

D) He prospered on his forgery and extended his business to many parts of the world.

45. What is the tone of this passage?

A) Boastful. B) Approving. C) Objective D) Critical.

Part V Cloze (10 minutes) (10)

Directions: In this section there is a passage with 20 blanks. For each blank there are three choices marked A), B), and C) on the right side of the paper. You should choose the ONE that best fits into the passage. Then mark the corresponding letter on Answer sheet 2 with a single line through the centre.

Tape Script of Listening Comprehension

Part II Listening (30 minutes)

Section A Writing

Directions: In this section you’ll listen to a passage only once. After listening to the passage, you are required to write a summary of what you have just heard. You can focus your summary on the advantages and disadvantages of online learning. Remember to write on Answer Sheet 1.

Many people believe good communication is the key to success when learning online. You should take the opportunity to get to know your teacher and classmates through email and by participating in Internet discussions. This will lead to a more positive and rewarding learning experience.

It’s true that learning the technology needed to take part in a class can at times be frustrating. For example, you may need to ask how to post your assignment on the Web. But, don’t worry! If you have a problem, ask for help. There’s no such thing as a stupid question, so there is no need to be intimidated or embarrassed. Sharing insights and answers freely is what makes the Internet such a great medium for learning.

Online classroom teacher Mike Roberts was asked about what he thought the greatest benefits of online learning are. “As a teacher, I need the students to ask questions so that I know what areas of my lessons need further explanation. That’s what is great about teaching and learning over the Internet. In an ordinary classroom, time is limited, so students seem to ask the minimum amount of questions possible. But in the virtual classroom, students are always asking questions. They really seem to feel comfortable asking me for the information that they need. They also share a lot of valuable ideas with each other in a way that you don’t usually see in a regular classroom.”

However, I, for one am far from ready to use online courses for my learning. Don’t get me wrong. I am very happy about all the communication and learning opportunities the courses have given us. But for me those opportunities should not be used to replace classroom activities. In other words, they are only tools to help me learn what has already been offered in the classroom.

I love the classroom. I love having classmates. There are forty students in my class right now, and I think it’s great. I even love having classmates who are better than me. And, let’s not forget the smell of ink on paper, the sound of chalk on a blackboard, the hardness of a wooden bench or the heat inside the classroom in early September. I love it all. But most of all, I love having a teacher –a “real live” teacher. I get excited when I am in the classroom with a good teacher. I learn in a way that has been proven to work. I am given insight not only into a certain subject, but also into the world.

What makes having a classroom teacher so special? A good teacher pushes me to succeed. A good teacher rewards me with praise when I have done well and stays positive and gives me hope when I am down. I don’t believe that a teacher using a virtual classroom can reach out to me in the same way. A teacher communicating through the Internet cannot share the same type of relationship a classroom teacher and student share.

I guess that I am lucky to have had access to so many excellent classroom teachers. I will never forget the kindness and commitment that those teachers have shown me. Their examples make it hard for me to accept a way of learning that does not include them. You can call me “old-fashioned”, but as long as there is a classroom, that’s where I will be learning.

Section B

Directions: In this section you’ll listen to some sentences. In each sentence there is a word or phrase missing. Fill in the blanks while listening to the sentences. Write your answer on Answer Sheet 2.

Everyone agreed that Diana could not have been more beautiful. Several, however, doubted whether she was the right girl for the Prince of Wales. Some of her friends also had doubts, which they expressed. Attractive, beautiful, delightful, kind and real as Diana was, they feared that the pair would not have enough in common to keep the relationship interesting. For a start there was the age difference: Diana was very young, only nineteen, while Charles was thirty-two and in some ways had had more experience than most men of fifty-two. He was a deep and reflecting person, while she was always on the go. He was interested in reading history and philosophy; she enjoyed women’s magazines and television. He loved classical music, and a treat for him was a night at the opera. She liked pop music, had no interest for opera, but enjoyed ballet. Charles could enjoy himself in the country, while Diana preferred the exciting activities of London. He could happily spend all day fishing; Diana would rather be in the city center shopping. His other great love was horse riding, which Diana hated. Her sister Sarah had been an eager horsewoman, but Diana had fallen off and broken her arm as a child and had never had any desire to repeat the experience. Her sport was tennis, which Charles had never much cared for.

Questions 11 to 15 are based on the passage you have just heard.

11. According to the speaker, what did some people think about Diana?

12. What was one reason Diana did not care for horse riding?

13. How was Diana different from Charles in hobbies?

14. According to the speaker, which of the following is not true?

15. What does the speaker say about Charles?

Section D

Directions: In this section you’ll listen to a conversation. At the end of the recording, some questions will be asked about what has been heard. After each question there will be a pause. During the pause, you must read the four choices marked A), B), C) and D), and decide which the best answer is. Then mark the corresponding letter on Answer Sheet 2 with a single line through the centre.

M: Hey, Chris! I didn’t expect to see you back in the regular English class.

W: Hi, Alan. I didn’t expect to be back either.

M: You don’t have to look so sad about it.

W: To be honest, I feel like a failure. At the start of the school year, our teacher thought that my English was good enough for me to join a new class for Internet learners. After two months of study in the online class, I think my English got worse. You know what I mean.

M: Whatever. Anyway, what was the problem with the online class?

W: Lots of things. For one, I was separated from my best friend. But the biggest problem was that I didn’t have anyone to help me. Without a teacher to tell me what to do, I never knew what to do in class. I was so discouraged. Needless to say, my English didn’t improve at all.

M: Do you really think that you should blame other people for your failings?

W: What?

M: I mean, you are responsible for your own studies, not your teacher or your friends. Maybe you should’ve worked harder to do well.

W: I don’t think I like what you’re saying. My experience with the online class taught me that it is necessary to have someone who can direct my studies.

Questions 16 to 20 are based on the passage you have just heard.

16. What recent event has surprised the two students?

17. Why did Chris leave the regular class?

18. What did Chris think of her online studies?

19. What happened to Chris after a couple of months in the online class?

20. What did Chris learn from her online studies?

Section E

Directions: In this section you will listen to a passage twice. When the passage is read for the first time, you should listen carefully for its general idea. When the passage is read for the second time, you are required to fill in the blanks with the exact words you have just heard. Finally, you should check what you have written. Write your answer on Answer Sheet 2.

Banks were developed to keep people’s money safe and make it accessible when they needed it.

An example of one businessman’s banking shows some of the services. James Jones has a furniture store and buys his goods from different parts of the country. It isn’t convenient for him to send money through the mail, so he goes to the bank and opens a checking account. He puts his money in the bank regularly, and the bank keeps it until he writes checks for it. When Mr. Jones orders furniture from a furniture company in another city, he simply writes a check. This check is as good as money to the owner of the company. The owner can take it to his bank and exchange it for money.

Now and then Mr. Jones puts money in a bank account. The bank then uses this money and pays him a certain return on each dollar every year. For example, if he puts in $1,000 and the bank pays him 4 percent, he earns $40 each year. This money is called interest.

Mr. Jones gets still other services from the bank. When he travels, he buys traveler's checks from the bank instead of carrying money with him. And he can hire a strong box in the bank for his valuable papers and articles. It's hard to imagine that people could do business without the services of a bank.
