Acknowledgment

(Times New Roman,

In writing this paper, I have benefited from the presence of my teachers and my classmates. They generously helped me collect materials I needed and made many invaluable suggestions. I hereby extend my grateful thanks to them for their kind help, without which the paper would not have been what it is.

Particularly, I am deeply indebted to Professor Li Hua-yang, my supervisor, who guided me throughout my writing of this thesis. He carefully read the whole draft and offered painstaking and precious criticism. His standards of academic excellence have made my revision an exciting and gratifying experience. I also wish to sincerely thank my classmates and friends Miss Zhang Yue and Mr. Liu Yi-long, whose brilliant ideas and perceptive observations have proved immensely constructive.

My parents took good care of my life and gave me a lot of encouragement when I was working at this thesis. They always share my weal and woe. I feel much grateful and heartily owe my achievement to them.

Furthermore, none of this would have been possible without the help of those individuals and organizations hereafter mentioned with gratitude: our school library and its staff, the library of Jiangxi University of Science and Technology and its staff.

Notes(Times New Roman,

(A note reference to a book should include the author, the title, the place, publisher, date of publication, and the page number(s) referred to)

1) Author: The author’s name should be in its usual order but not inverted as in a bibliography. The author’s name is followed by a comma.

2) Title: The title of a book should be underlined or italicized. The title of a short story or an article should be put in quotation marks. The title is not followed by a comma or a period but half of the parentheses.

3) Place of publication: The place of publication, either a city or a town, should be put in the parentheses, and the place is followed by a colon. If the state or province where the city or town is located is also mentioned, you should put the city or town before the state or province and put a comma in between and a colon after the state or province.

4) Publisher: The press, company or publishing house is also put in the parentheses and is followed by a comma. Note that UP is used for “University Press” and P for “Press”.

5) Date of publication: This is put after the publisher and is followed by the other half of the parentheses.

So you can see that items 3), 4) and 5) in a note are all put in the parentheses. Outside the parentheses, there should be no punctuation.

6) Page number(s): The page number(s) is put outside the parentheses and is followed by a period.

The following are some samples of first notes for the sources cited in the discussion of bibliography. Notice the differences in the use of punctuation between a reference entry and a note entry.

 1. Andrew Hacker, Two Nations: Black and White, Separate, Hostile, Unequal (New York: Charles Scriber’s Sons, 1992) 181.

 2. Marlies K. Danziger and W. Stacy Johnson, An Introduction to Literary Criticism (Boston: D. C. Heath and Company, 1961) 324.

 14. Vincent Brome, “Freud, Sigmund,” Encyclopedia Britannica, 1977, VII, 738.

A note reference to a magazine should include the author, the title of the article, the name of the article, the name of the magazine, the volume and issue number, the date, and the page or pages referred to. A note to a magazine is almost identical to the bibliography entry except that the author’s name is not inverted and, instead of giving all the pages of the article—as in a bibliography—you indicate only the specific page or pages referred to in your text.

15. John T. Elson, “Much Ado,” Time 19 Jan. 1976: 71.

16. Annette T. Rubinstein, “The Dark Journey of Eugene O’ Neill,” Mainstream 10.4 (1957): 31.

17. “Twin Games Bid: Wrestling, Judo,” New York Times 9 Apr. 1972, Sec. 5: 15.

Ibid., the abbreviation of the Latin adverb ibidem, meaning “in the same place,’ may be used if the source in that note is the same as the one cited in the immediately preceding note:

 18. Hess 12.

19. Ibid.

In the final bibliography, all sources to be included are alphabetically arranged, by the last names of the authors, in a single list. If several works by the same author are listed, a dash is used in place of the author’s name for each item following the first. All items should begin flush on the left-hand side without indention. If an entry requires more than one line, the second or third line should be indented five spaces.

The English term relation is far from being an exact equivalent of the Chinese term guanxi(关系)

Hymes coined the term in deliberate contrast to Chomsky’s “linguistic competence” (actually, linguistic knowledge), which is confined to internal rules of grammatical structures and abstracts from social rules of language use.12 By “communicative competence”, Hymes means a competence of when to speak, when not, and as to what to talk about with whom, when, where, in what manner. ……As Robert Politzer insists, “As language teachers we must be interested in the study of culture not because we necessarily want to teach the culture of the country but because we have to teach it. If we teach language without teaching at the same time the culture in which it operates, we are teaching meaningless symbols to which the students attach wrong meaning.”13 Therefore in FLT, there needs to be cultural instruction in relation to the foreign language itself or other aspects of the language.

Gabel, John B., and Charles B. Wheeler, The Bible As Literature: An Introduction, 2nd ed. New York: Oxford UP, Inc., 1990(Times New Roman, 四号字)
