WETHEPEOPLESOFTHEUNITEDNATIONSDETERMINEDtosavesucceedinggenerationsfromthescourgeofwar,whichtwiceinourlifetimehasbroughtuntold
sorrowtomankind,andtoreaffirmfaithinfundamentalhumanrights,inthedignityandworthofthehumanperson,intheequalrightsofmenandwomenandofnationslargeandsmall,andtoestablishconditionsunderwhichjusticeandrespectfortheobligationsarisingfromtreatiesandothersourcesofinternationallawcanbemaintained,andtopromotesocialprogressandbetterstandardsoflifeinlargerfreedom,ANDFORTHESEENDStopracticetoleranceandlivetogetherinpeacewith
oneanotherasgoodneighbours,andtouniteourstrengthtomaintaininternationalpeaceandsecurity,andtoensure,bytheacceptanceofprinciplesandtheinstitutionofmethods,thatarmedforceshallnotbeused,saveinthecommoninterest,andtoemployinternationalmachineryforthepromotionoftheeconomicandsocialadvancementofallpeoples,HAVERESOLEDTOCOMBINEOUREFFORTSTOACCOMPLISHTHESEAIMSAccordingly,ourrespectiveGovernments,throughrepresentativesassembledinthecityofSanFrancisco,whohaveexhibitedtheirfullpowersfoundtobeingoodanddueform,haveagreedtothepresentCharteroftheUnitedNationsanddoherebyestablishaninternationalorganizationtobeknownastheUnitedNations.
